rikaikun shows the reading and English definition of Japanese words when you hover over Japanese text in the browser.

Image from store rikaikun
Description from store As a Japanese dictionary, rikaikun helps you look up the only the words you don't know without losing your place. It's also useful for Japanese speakers wanting to know how to say Japanese phrases in English. Features: * Using shift or enter, switch between word, names, and Kanji dictionaries. * Enable text to speech in the options to hear Japanese words you look up spoken out load. * Press 'c' to copy the current word and definitions to the clipboard for making flash cards. * Customize how the pop up dictionary looks and what content it shows. Activate the extension by clicking the 理 icon in the top right. When the introductory pop up appears, rikaikun is ready for action. When it's activated, when you hover over Japanese words they'll be translated in a pop up. If you hit shift/enter, you'll see some information about the first Kanji. Press 'd' to hide the English definitions; press it again to bring them back. (Also changeable on the Options page.) Changelog: https://github.com/melink14/rikaikun/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md

  • (2023-08-31) highwizard: Could have more languages besides english. I have to use the translator anyway, so it's not useful.
  • (2023-04-18) Anthony Guillo: Doesn't work at all...But maybe we need to do something about settings but not information about it so useless.

  • (2022-11-21) Richard Lee: I have to click the icon every time to turn it on. Can it automatically turned on or always on? 每次都要點圖示才能啟用,可以一直開著嗎?
  • (2022-11-20) Amelia SH: This extension is perfect but I notice some bugs: 1. It gets on the way whatever japanese text I am typing exp when the cursor is near the text 2. It often turns on the "hide definitions and show only reading" by itself. It's not like there is shortcut to it, right??
  • (2022-11-18) Nonthawit Sudhisongkroh: Love the app. but keyboard shortcut without clicking the icon would be super useful. Thank you.
  • (2022-09-26) Flower Ss: 这个插件太强了!希望能追加中文!
  • (2022-09-04) Moepi: Good for reading difficult Japanese words on the fly, but not that great for studying to put words into your long-term memory because there is no integration with Anki (AnkiConnect). If you can add Anki integration I would use this over Yomichan since the popup design is prettier.
  • (2022-06-20) Waris Ruzi: I use this extension on a daily basis. It's extremely handy, and I enjoy it.
  • (2022-05-20) C K: 什麼都沒有跑出來啊…
  • (2022-03-30) Milena Krzemińska: cool but maybe pls change the color of the english translations like i mean the text color because it blends w the blue background and i hardly can read it
  • (2022-03-30) Jonathan B: I love this extension. Its super helpful. If you could get it to work on PDF files while in chrome, that would take away my only complaint.
  • (2022-03-15) Rumi Hira: Thank you for making wonderful tool. I always introduce this function to Japanese Teacher who teach student with dyslexia. It works great.
  • (2022-03-08) Fabien Correge: I really love the extension. It looks like it uses JMdict under the hood, which makes its translations consistent with many other learning tools. However, I have not been able to use it today on google Doc. I don't know whether this is because of an update from either Rikaikun or google, or just because of an issue on my end. Hopefully the issue will be fixed in the future, or will fix itself if my environment's to blame. Great tool anyaway.
  • (2022-02-28) Elkie Chan: Is it possible to enable text-to-speech, not automatically, but when I press a key? This is so it only pronounces the word when I want it to. Best is if the pronunciation could be repeated when my cursor is pointing at the word.
  • (2022-02-04) Petar Radojevic: Pretty useful extension. For some reason, it won't let me translate phrases after a comma, so I'm forced to delete commas in sentences to use rikaikun to translate a word. Fixing this issue would be good for user experience.
  • (2022-01-10) Akira Wang: I really really really love it, but sometimes it cannot be used, any tip to fix that?
  • (2021-11-21) ZdrytchX de Frisquilous: No longer works on legacy versions of chrome before version ~90 or so. The way this extension works is that you need to click the icon to enable it, then hover over the kanji/kana that you want to read and provides several potential readings up to 4 character long or so. Very straightforward and does the job well.
  • (2021-10-10) Lee Sommerfeldt: Helpful, but they should allow users to bind the keys. When a page is full of text with nowhere to put your mouse and the Enter key is stuck shifting the dictionaries, it's infuriating. Please allow users to change the controls.
  • (2021-09-14) Mustafa Ege Gürel: It's great! Very useful extension.
  • (2021-08-30) Emily Lee: very good
  • (2021-08-22) Tumi: This is an absolute lifesaver. While I wish there was a slightly more comprehensive tutorial and list of commands in the options menu (I only discovered the names dictionary after coming back to the store page many months later), it does everything it needs to do and packs in so much functionality! While there are possibly some other quality of life changes that could be made, I don't think I can give this any less than 5*, especially seeing as it's totally free!
  • (2021-08-06) kashinath panta: 素晴らしいツールです。しかもPDFファイルでも操作ができればともっと助かります。
  • (2021-07-11) Lily Liu: Absolutely amazing tool that made my life many times easier. However I think a font colour option would be helpful since the contrast is not ideal.
  • (2021-07-09) JT: Only seems to work for Japanese websites, not Japanese text across the web in general; i.e. - doesn't translate if you're on an English site that uses Japanese text.
  • (2021-06-29) Firo Yang: Love it!!! Very useful!!! Japanese salvation.
  • (2021-06-28) van i7as: 除了加入英语翻译之外,能不能加入中文翻译啊?
  • (2021-06-21) je faus: It's AMAZING! but saldly to make it work u have to install it and uninstall it over and over again cause IT WILL STOP WORKING after 1 o 2 days without any reason, and it's always the same, it works for 1 day or 2 and then it stops, so, 1 star for the idea! 0 star for the bad programming of the app! :/
  • (2021-06-08) Mainichinopia: I love this!! It has helped me a lot while reading Twitter and other websites in Japanese. The best part is you can check in a fast and easy way the reading of the word you want and at the same time, see the English definition so is a great way to learn kanji and vocabulary. Thank you for creating this!!! I always recommend this extension to other Japanese learners.
  • (2021-06-07) 津路水炮900ml: way too convenient to be true
  • (2021-05-28) Michael Rose: I really like this extension, but it sometimes stops showing the English translations, so I have to remove the extension and then add it back again. This happens every couple weeks. ;(
  • (2021-05-26) Claude Slater: Is good but doesn't seem to work with certain fonts.
  • (2021-04-21) Sailor Katana: Seriously the best Japanese learning extension I've ever used. It makes everything easier to study. Thank you so much!
  • (2021-04-20) Hannah B: Doesn't work. Nothing is happening.
  • (2021-04-02) Mike Slides: nice
  • (2021-03-05) ゴンザレズジョセフ: great but would be better if: -they'd remove the pinyin entries -make it so "画像" doesn't pop up when you scroll over an image
  • (2021-02-21) Nigel Lim: Makes it really easy to go through a kanji heavy page. Thanks a million!
  • (2021-02-08) Madison Jane: I love this extension, I've used it for years and it's helped me study so much. Big thank you to the creator <3
  • (2021-01-30) Moisés Magaldi: melhor que tem, pena que só tem versão em inglês, mas o tradutor do google consegue traduzir.
  • (2021-01-25) adrian verdugo: se vee muy interesante, ayuda muchisimo a la hora de aprender. ありがとうございました
  • (2021-01-22) 馮名逸: 非常方便的擴充程式
  • (2020-12-01) Justin Bacon: Rikaikun has been a life saver for over a decade. I do have one problem... Recently it keeps resetting the highlight text setting, which is really annoying when you're trying to fill out a form and the text boxes keep losing focus. Not sure why this suddenly started happening, but it's the only problem I've ever had with the extension since it was first released.
  • (2020-11-30) Maja Košutić: This is amazing!(I would only work on adding popular authors’ and historical figures' names and book titles etc. to the database) (Also, when I try to copy paste with my keyboard, the extension bubble shows up, because I press SHIFT A or SHIFT V and then ENTER) Otherwise, this add-on saves lives. Thank you so much for the effort of making it!
  • (2020-11-21) CowFroggers: Works Great But How I wish it had Romji like RikaiChamp has for FireFox, O well I don't use chrome much anyways. ツ

  • (2022-06-26, v:2.4.7) CONNOR KIRK: Bug when zoomed in on Google docs
The plugin works fine now on text in a Google doc when the zoom is set to 100%, but if I increase the zoom to 150% or 200% to make it easier to read, Rikaikun stops being useful. Definitions still pop up, but they're not what the cursor is pointing at. It's almost like the plugin is seeing at the document at 100% zoom, even when it's being displayed larger. I tried refreshing multiple times, but this appears to be a bug.

Hi there, I've been using rikaikun for a few years and it's been great. However in the last few days I've noticed that rikaikun isn't working on Instagram pages? The blue highlight comes up on the text but no definition appears. Could you please offer some advice on this? Thank you very much!
  • (2022-03-18, v:2.2.3) Tob Lud: Rikaikun does not show english entries anymore
Rikaikun does not show the english dictionary entries anymore. It is not caused by the "D" toggle (I have tried that), but it rather appears that the dictionary entries are not loaded anymore, since the spaces between the hiragana in the blue pop up box are present but simply empty.
  • (2022-03-02, v:2.2.1) Alternative Projects: Google Docs Issue
Hi, have used rikaikun with Google Docs for months, as of last week the html fallback stopped working and have been unable to force it to work at all. I see that this is likely a result of it thinking it IS working in Canvas now that support for that has supposedly been added? Would appreciate an option or something. I have no other extensions installed in Chrome whatsoever.
  • (2022-02-27, v:2.2.0) Justin Lee: Still not working in Google Docs?
Hi! Thank you for all of your work on Rikaikun! I use it all the time. With the latest versions of Rikaikun and Chrome browser, the extension doesn't seem to be working in Google Docs anymore (again). Have tried refreshing the page(s), restarting the browser, and restarting my laptop, all to no avail. Is the issue supposedly fixed?

  • (2022-01-29, v:2.1.27) Max Moroz: Google Docs
It doesn't seem that it works with Google Docs. I thought it was because of Canvas rendering, but I double checked that Google Docs actually switches to HTML rendering when it detects Rikaikun. (In particular, in the console $(".kix-paragraphrenderer") returns the proper value for a DOM object.) So it must be some other glitch, perhaps related to recent updates in Google Docs? Thank you!

  • (2022-01-21, v:2.1.26) Kevin Ejnebrand: Any plans for an Android version?
Hi there. I have much like many others had great help in my studies from rikakun, and I absolutely love it. Which is why I must ask, will there ever be an Android version? I just recently bought myself a tablet that I planned to designate to reading implement for my studies, and out of four apps used for roughly the same purpose as rikaikun that I tried, two are annoying to use, and two weren't updated to match the latest Android version. I simply want to tap a word and have a translation square appear, as rikaikun does, and yet nothing like this exists as far as I know. I'm sure many have asked the same thing, but it never hurts to try. If you're planning to use Kickstarter or something similar, I'd be glad to donate for this. Cheers!

After the last update the extension is not working properly. It's scanning the JP text and showing the pop-up as intended, but the english translation is not showing. • (2021-10-21, v:2.1.13) Sherii Santos: Text has been gray out
To the developers of rikaikun. Thank you for making such a useful extension. I noticed that the text that used to be written in white (word definitions, etc) has recently turned to gray. It makes it very hard to read it. I tried using other color options but (light blue/black/yellow) but the colors are a bit distracting. I really hope you put the blue/white combination back again. The color combo made it reading the text easier. Please and thanks.

Hello, I've noticed recently I cannot use the extension on some of my google docs but others I can. Or sometimes it will work on one and then other times it won't. Is that because of the migration to canvas? How can I fix this issue with ease? arigatō!

Hi! I just downloaded this extension and it highlights everything fine and when I press C and then paste somewhere it pastes the definitions, so clearly it is doing something and reading what is highlighted. But I get no popup box at all, just the highlighting. I tried pressing D to see if that was the issue and nothing happens. I also tried on multiple websites (Youtube, Wikipedia, Google and all have the same results).
  • (2021-05-13, v:1.1.0) Yan Alkovic: Doesn't toggle in V1.1.0
Ever since the update I haven't been able to toggle the extension in the browser (when it's supposed to get the little red "ON" text box right beside the "ri"). I'll bet that it's got to do with the fact that I'm using 67.0.3396.87, as I haven't updated my Mac OS since 2015-ish (personal choice). The previous version of the extension worked fine, is it possible to release it as well?
  • (2021-03-12, v:1.0.0) Trương Văn Thiên Tâm: Got wrong words when hovering
Rikaikun doesn't show the word I'm hovering to, but instead showing the word much far behind, and the longer the sentence, the bigger the gap. For example, if I hovering to the word "視界" in "いきなり視界が真っ暗になった", it will appear the definition of "真っ暗" instead.

  • (2020-12-31, v:1.0.0) Andrew Ryan: Extension changing settings on its own
Hello! Hope this finds you well. I wanted to ask about a problem I'm having with the extension. Through no action of my own, sometimes in the middle of using it, Rikaikun switches its settings to hide definitions. It happens during use and between uses, and it happens every time I use the extension. It's a pain to have to go and change the settings back every time. Is this happening for a reason? Is there any way to address this? It seems that hiding the definition is some kind of default setting, but I'm not totally sure why it's going back all the time on its own - and it has nothing to do with closing or quitting chrome, etc. etc. Thank you! Andrew Ryan

  • (2020-07-26, v:0.10.1) Paul Reed: Some suggestions
Hi This is really good and useful! I just have some ideas... Could it be done so that this translates etc based on what I select, rather than auto-selecting what is at the cursor? Could you make a way to show the shortcut keys (without having to restart it)? Could you make the text-to-speech say other definitions rather than just the first one? Thanks

  • (2020-04-29, v:0.10.1) Chris Hilgenberg: Allowing local additions to the dictionary rikaikun uses
Was using the tool when I noticed it had issues parsing very famous place names correctly. 長崎 (Nagasaki) is one example. It doesn't recognize that as a place, just gives kun and on yomi readings for its characters. Would there be a way to add a word to what Rikaikun uses currently in the future? Or perhaps in a future update adding a bunch of place names regularly used in Japan at least?

Dear Mr. Speed, First of all, thank you for making such a great program. It helps me tremendously in learning and reading Japanese. I have a problem when I use it to translate vertical texts. The translation appear to also be vertical, making it difficult to read (latin alphabet), and cannot be seen whole since the translation is too long for the screen width. Usually the upper part is cut. Thank you~
