Select a word on a website and immediately look up its translation. No tabs, no windows. Guranteed!
This extension allows you to select a word or phrase on a website and to look it up in the LEO dictionary by simply pressing a keyboard shortcut. The dictionary pops up conveniently in the upper right corner inside your browser window. It does not open a new tab or window.
The shortcut defaults to Alt+W, however you can set it to virtually any shortcut in the options page. The language defaults to German - English and can also be configured in the options page.
Available languages are:
English ⇔ German
French ⇔ German
Spanish ⇔ German
Italian ⇔ German
Chinese ⇔ German
Russian ⇔ German
Portuguese ⇔ German
Polish ⇔ German

** NOTICE **
For existing users the shortcut changed from Alt+Q to Alt+W. I am sorry if this caused you any inconvenience, however it was necessary as the old shortcut caused a lot of trouble for some users.

- (2021-04-15) Zack Dubnoff: So frustrating! The dictionary opens in a pop up window that is too small to read the definitions, the window is not resizable, and it constantly asks to accept cookies. This makes it unusable. It's a pity...this would be so useful!
- (2020-12-09) Raza: I really liked the extension, but recently the cookies acceptance dialog box is covering the dictionary windows that open up, and I have to manually close the cookies information window first before I can look up the meaning. It is really irritating doing it over and over again. Earlier I just had to press the shortcut key and get the meaning of the highlighted word on the side window that would pop out.
- (2020-10-08) Unfortunately this extension doesn't work for me. After rightclicking on a word and selecting "Look up *word*", it opens a pop-up window which only shows half of the Leo web page content (you can scroll uo/down, but not right/left). So I can't really read the whole definition of the word, the text is cut.
- (2020-08-23) Juan Camilo Nieto: Ecerytime i open the translator a cookie message appears. Every sigle time. Also the display is not really as shown in the pictures. It opens the whole page and is very troublesome to get into the part of the page that contains the traslation. I don't recommend it and will remove right away.
- (2019-09-12) Lucas Rotava: It is a great idea, but needs improvement in the implementation. A resizable window would be an awesome start, so that we don't need to scroll to find the results.
- (2019-09-07) Vamsi_ dg: Very handy widget. For people who have troubles to scroll through the whole window, switch to the mobile version that appears as notification!
- (2019-03-14) Samson Daniel: This thing is bad. Instead of opening a small window for the word definition, it opens a whole page where you must scroll horizontally and vertically with bloated page. Why not just open a small dialog or window box to read what a word means .. arghh
- (2018-12-27) Window not resizable, content centered in a larger window than the fixed size so I have to scroll every time to find the translation. I did manage to move it so the title bar was hidden under the bookmark bar (so I couldn't close it and couldn't use keyboard commands to move it either) and had to uninstall/reinstall it to get it back. Really handy as a lookup but not very usable.
- (2018-07-31) husoranger: This application is amazing, but it has problem with its user agent... it displays results as windows web page, it used to display results as a mobile app, which had a better interface, it should be fixed...
- (2017-09-07) M: Vraiment très utile, mais la traduction Français-Allemand est la seule qui ne fonctionne pas pour l'instant, malheureusement. Ça mérite tout de même 5 étoiles ! Really useful even if the French-German translation is the only one which doesn't work for now. Even so, it deserves its 5 stars.
- (2017-07-31) Erik Brewer: Used to be great, as it required no external searches or tabs/windows. Now, the widget just returns a "404 - not found, nginx" error. Doesn't seem to work on any site that I tested. Shame. Edit: Uninstalled the widget, closed chrome completely, oped it again, re-installed, and it works. Great widget
- (2017-03-23) Neil Keifer: does not work on http://www.spiegel.de/
- (2017-03-12) Philionnaire (Philionnaire): Eigentlich eine tolle app aber seit Kurzem unbrauchbar wegen adblock., Sorry aber es ist nunmal so: user hassen Werbung und die Zwangsbeglückung ist nicht der Weg. Da zahle ich lieber dafür keine Werbung sehen zu müssen.
- (2016-12-10) Rene Kicker: Super Widget!!!
- (2016-11-03) Matthew S: This is garbage. How do you work anything?
- (2016-10-31) Tyler Kropp: It is great being able to add a custom button to pop the little translator up, which updates as you highlight on a page, for example. Leo is the best translation for German/English, too, in my opinion.
- (2016-08-20) Alexander CPunkt: Select a word, right click and get the translation instant on same tab -> works great
- (2016-04-28) It doesn't work on all webpages, but it seems to on most. Very helpful for a quick look-up.
- (2016-04-15) Christoph Gorgulla: Very convenient and nice!
- (2015-10-21) Gugelhupf Mandolin: As handy as it should be. Die beste Erweiterung, die ich gefunden habe um Vokabeln beim Lesen nachzuschlagen.
- (2015-06-27) Ralf Dietrich: Es macht genau was es soll und nicht mehr. Super!
- (2015-04-25) 愛紅: Works fine for me! Restart your computer if you're having issues :) Super helpful!

- (2014-06-13) Jochen Hartl: Super tool! Macht genau das, was es soll und ist ungemein nützlich.
