Description from store Auto Tab Discard a lightweight extension that automatically reduces the memory load of open-but inactive-tabs. This also helps portable devices to save battery. Extension preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ityhxUPp3y8 Features: 1. Speeds up your browser and minimizes memory usage: Inactive, idle, or forgotten tabs can be auto-discarded after a configurable period of time, or discarded manually from the toolbar menu. 2. Designate specific tabs (websites) to be whitelisted to prevent discarding. 3. Discarded tabs can be retained after closing and re-opening your browser. 4. The tab's favicon displays the discarded state. 5. Tabs are restored with all information intact (like scroll position or the content of text boxes). 6. When a tab is discarded, no JavaScript code or dom event is active (basically, the tab is paused). 7. Force discarding certain hostnames (e.g. you can immediately discard hostnames that use too much CPU or memory) Options (there are a few options to customize when a tab gets discarded): 1. When a tab is pinned 2. When there is a media source playing inside a tab 3. When the computer is connected to a power source 4. When there is a form element (with changes) that has not yet been submitted. Notes: 1. Unlike "The Great Suspender" extension, this extension uses the native method to discard tabs, which prevents losing the discarded tabs, when the extension is removed or when the browser crashes. There is no need for session restoring.

  • (2021-03-29) Herbert Hans: work perfectly for me :) I only would suggest for new users to check the settings and deactivate: "Permanently delete (remove) old discarded tabs if they are inactive for (in hours)"
  • (2021-03-26) Treasureisland: This is a great plugin, but it seems that it can't work with chrome experimental function: "Tab Groups Collapse Freezing(chrome://flags/#tab-groups-collapse-freezing)". Can you support this in the future? So that I can have muti-stages for every tab: hidden -> freezing -> discard.
  • (2021-03-20) Noctuna: Long time replacement of The Great Suspender and still a must have extention for me (who uses way to many tabs)
  • (2021-03-15) Ron Johnson: Simple to use, and allows multi-site keep-alive whitelisting (for sites like stackexchange). Great for my company laptop with "only" 8GB RAM which has many other programs running.
  • (2021-03-10) Jaroslaw Istok: Support sholuld be here not on third sites :( It still doesn't block Youtube even if I deleted this host under options.
  • (2021-03-05) Alessandro Kiramarios: Nice extension. Does just what it needs to do. Worthy alternative to “The Great Suspender”.
  • (2021-03-04) Travis M: I change the time setting pretty frequently, so calculating how many seconds are in 2/3/4/5/6 hours **every** single time is frustrating. Could you please change the time setting from seconds to minutes... or at least give an option to use minutes? Maybe include a minutes amount setting AND a separate seconds amount setting? (Final setting would be minutes+seconds combined) I don't know why anybody would ever need to discard tabs at a specific second? Maybe there's a reason for using seconds.
  • (2021-03-03) Nico: Looking great so far. 1. Can't find an option to prevent the active tab from being unsuspended. Is there a way? 2. Would love a keyboard shortcut to suspend all tabs 🙏 3. Would love a keyboard shortcut to suspend selected tabs 🙏
  • (2021-03-01) Ahmed Z: Great replacement for The Great Suspender (which had been found to be spyware). Would be awesome to have more shortcuts and "save this tab for all sessions" option
  • (2021-03-01) Cristian Constantin: very good
  • (2021-02-26) Briancatmaster Cat: The extension is fine, but all the bookmark icons have been turned into globes and there are problems with keeping history. How do I revert this?
  • (2021-02-24) Alberto Murillo: I think this extension is great, but I do have 2 wishes. First an option to keep tabs discarded even when you click on them, if you click on one it will auto un-discard it and I don't like that. Second I want the extension to remember where I was on Youtube videos, if I discard a tab and unsuspend it, the video will start from the beginning which is annoying. And yes I'm a refugee from The Great Suspender like many others
  • (2021-02-23) prolific: The great suspender is still better
  • (2021-02-19) A Jolly: This extension is fast, highly configurable, source code available, seriously awesome. Found this as a replacement to the great suspender.
  • (2021-02-17) Jamie Weston: Switched to this after The Great Suspender was killed off and it's mostly okay... but there's no reason for the obnoxious notifications every time you add a domain to the whitelist. Why on earth would I want to be notified about the thing I just did?
  • (2021-02-15) Wolfgang Hukriede: What's the purpose of "auto tab discard cannot discard a tab when it is active"? I thought, this was the intent. Only if I add another tab on the same window the discarding is allowed. Also, overall the documentation is too scant. Why no mention of chrome://discards/? Coming from The Great Suspender, I'm still not convinced.
  • (2021-02-13) zero mark: 很好用 希望选项能写的更明白一些
  • (2021-02-12) Darth Bidder: It's a good replacement for that other tab suspending app. It works good on Chrome but in Opera not that much since it still tries to load a few of the tabs I have already discarded whenever I open the browser.
  • (2021-02-11) Tom Bidson: It is not working for me. I put 1800 secs interval to discard - but is doing nothing - no tabs are discarded.
  • (2021-02-10) el komodos-drago: God does this need a GUI redesign. This is 2020, CSS EXISTS!
  • (2021-02-08) Zalacain72: Excellent work ! Detailed, meticulous and without overload: installed on Opera version 74. I have too often more and more than 30 tabs open ... Shame on me. But thanks to you, I manage my instances much better; my memory is freed all the better too. THANK YOU ! [FR] Excellent travail ! MERCI !
  • (2021-02-06) Jøta Seth: Estaba revisando alternativas a The Great Suspender, incluyendo algún fork cuando he visto mencionada esta extensión. No echo en falta nada, la reemplaza por completo y funciona perfectamente.
  • (2021-02-06) Tantono「タントノ」David出人「デビド」: I think this extension is fine. But, marvellous suspender is much better
  • (2021-02-05) Édson Kuzniewski: fica fechando o navegador sozinho...
  • (2021-02-05) Dan M.: Super buena! reemplaza perfectamente a The Great Suspender.
  • (2021-02-05) Oliver Anteros: Since great suspender got removed (rightfully so, since it contained malware) I've had to look for a replacement. I've use this extension for just about 1h now, and I got to say I'm impressed. This extension might actually be better than great suspender was at its prime. I managed to reduce the CPU usage of chrome from 67% (of pc total) down to 0.3%
  • (2021-02-05) Sergio Astudillo: This is a fantastic replacement for The Great Suspender. It does the job well with almost the same config settings. If you need to quickly reload all tabs use the "Reload All Tabs" addon.
  • (2021-02-04) Alex Lopez: This extension un-discards the tab any time I open it or even hover over it. I could not find an option to disable these features. I browse my tabs often to search for specific pages, and I do not like having all those tabs load as I scroll through them. This extension otherwise works well, but this issues makes it worse than several alternatives in my opinion.
  • (2021-02-04) Stan A Kowalczyk: Thought it was like the great suspender, it should say it BIG BOLD LETTERS that it completely deletes your tabs and you cant get them back. I lost 50-60 tabs on 4 computers, which was days or more of research and such that is gone now. Would give this app 0 stars if I could. Auto Tab Discard, you suck!
  • (2021-02-04) ادع الی سبیل ربك: it's need to be updated please it's your chance to gain new users after the "The Great Suspender" extension is down
  • (2021-02-04) Aniket Jain: A Great alternative to The Great Suspender after it was removed, but I wish it wouldn't autoatically un-discard a tab if you click on it - I wish if you were on the tab and then clicked or something *then* it would load back up.
  • (2021-01-30) Mango Pomelo: i have been looking for an app like this for months
  • (2020-12-08) Rolando: Not very convinced yet. It does work fast and relatively simple, at first. But still has quite some flaws which annoy me after a short while of intensive use. I came from TheGreatSuspender so my expectation might be a bit higher. Just switched from TGS due to apparent issues with ownership change. The settings menu is not very intuitive or clear or maybe that's because some settings simply do not work correctly for some reason. I use the latest version on (an older) Mac. For instance: "5. Tabs are restored with all information intact (like scroll position or the content of text boxes)." >> well it does not. At least on Youtube, a whole textbox was lost after it was Discarded and loaded the page again.... very annoying. While the music position was still on the same position though. My usual process of still backing up text from boxes every now and then when writing online was of course just forgotten this time...:-/ Also the "Keep tabs for this session" option in the popup menu Checkmarked or not gave some really weird behaviour as it was regularly auto checked for random reason and I couldn't seem to find out why my tabs didn't want to Auto discard....unchecking this very every tab one by one solved it. Cumbersome.... Furthermore it annoys me very much that when Discarding a current tab, or want to close a current tab you are on or a few tabs you just have been working from, and close it with CTRL-W for instance, it automatically jumps to a random next tab which, when it is also discarded automatically undiscards again immediately. Doing the same again from there you embark in a irritating hopping journey searching for an open tab to do this action. This feels so clumsy and is a serious UI flaw. It's plain stupid. And on a bit slower computer and with many tabs extra pages unwanted loading just slows you down again. So Discarding all the tabs on the Left or Right when you look for a tab 'in the corner' seems to be the only way to do this, but you always end up with at least one tab undiscarded, the one you are on, or....the next one when you get forced hopped over to the next one....Dev please change this. Also "Discarding other tabs in this window" or other option sometimes just do nothing. Tabs don't discard, or not all of them. When repeating multiple times or using a different option it then does react. Some have a grey dot, but some don't. And never will. Weird. Also immediate auto loading a tab when (accidentally) clicking on a tab is not very intuitive too. TGS extension has a click function for this, but I guess this needed a specific extra function to do this which Auto tab discard clearly doesn't have built in and prob makes it therefor slimmer and faster. TGS is indeed a bit more resource hogging, but also way better in UI and options to be honest. Hopefully some of these features can be built in? Some tabs also don't discard manually and all in all I am losing a lot more time figuring out and discarding tabs than actually gaining productivity in the first place. I could rather just read and finish off that tab right away then in that time because this is very cumbersome..... Last but not least I also miss Keyboard shortcuts in the Settings menu. Why not there? Hoping for better days dev please look at this, otherwise I will have to uninstall it and go the Github dev way with a fork of the old TGS extension again and hope for the best.....

  • (2020-11-17) aditya aggarwal: does not actually clear the tabs from memory but pretends to. thegreatdiscarder works better and is actually based on chrome default discarding system. you can check that inactive tabs don't show in chrome task manager.

  • (2020-11-11) Vince Kong: Like and good to use
  • (2020-11-11) K White: Just switch from TGS due to apparent issues with ownership change. In any case. Like the extension. One thing I would like to see, if possible, would be an entry in the tab context menu, if possible. Could match the page context entry. Only thing I preferred with TGS missing here is the ability to go to a tab and keep it hibernated. Not a big deal, but it's taking some getting used to. I suspect the method used here frees up more resources by not using a placeholder page, though, so it is what it is.
  • (2020-10-19) Bulent S.: It doesn't seem to work Chrome 86. I see a huge amount of RAM usage in the task manager.

  • (2020-07-31) omil21: An important question : why did you make this extension ? How do you make profit from it ? Are there any kind of user information that is taken with help from the extension ? Can we see the full source code ? Thank you for developping this extension
