Renders Wikipedia equations with MathJax

Image from store Wikipedia with MathJax
Description from store Extension replaces Wikipedia bitmap equations with HTML-CSS ones by re-rendering them with an open source MathJax (http://mathjax.org/) library. In effect, this allows to scale Wikipedia pages without loosing in equation quality. Left-Click on equation to instantly zoom it to 200% (can be changed via MathJax menu). Right-Click on equation to show MathJax's context menu with additional options, e.g. "Scale All Math..." to instantly scale all equations on a page, "TeX commands" to see the source TeX equation etc. Extension is now published under New BSD License (https://github.com/bgromov/wiki-mathjax/blob/master/LICENSE.md) with the source code available here (https://github.com/bgromov/wiki-mathjax). For bug reports and feature requests, please use the Issue tracker (https://github.com/bgromov/wiki-mathjax/issues). UPDATE: v.0.0.13: - Change MathJax CDN to CDNJS (Thanks to Lorenzo Cameroni and Peter Krautzberger). v.0.0.12: - Add support for chemical equations (Thanks to Jordan Wade). v.0.0.11: Improvements and bug fixes (Thanks to Lorenzo Cameroni): - Adapt to recent Wikimedia math engine changes. - Improve work-around for unbalanced braces bug on Wikiwand. - Add missed symbols to MathJax config. v.0.0.10: - Finally fix the problem with descriptive annotations for equations (some equations have textual descriptions instead of TeX code, perhaps for accessibility reasons). Now the math is loaded from corresponding source pages (edit pages). - Update jQuery to v1.12.3. Extension seems to work a bit better with Wikiwand now. v.0.0.9: - Add support for Wikiwand (wikiwand.com). Quick and hackish implementation, that tries to fix broken equations on Wikiwand pages. v.0.0.8: - Add support for WikiBooks (wikibooks.org). v.0.0.7: - Extension now uses official Wikimedia MathJax config. Still, there are some glitches, so the local copy is used for now. v.0.0.6: - Fix MathJax CDN URL (Thanks to Thomas Kriechbaumer). v.0.0.5: - Add MathJax Preview feature. For smoother user experience original images replaced only after MathJax typesetting is ready (Thanks to Peter Krautzberger). - Fix: by default MathJax using different from LaTeX \color macro. That makes certain equations unable to render (for example, see Extended Kalman Filter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Kalman_filter#Discrete-time_predict_and_update_equations) ). The problem is solved by MathJax' `color` extension. v.0.0.4: - Fix: Fix: extension now works on secured (https) version of Wikipedia v.0.0.3: - Fix: extension now works on secured (https) version of Wikipedia v.0.0.2: - Now supports some non-standart LaTeX commands specific to Wikipedia markup language. - Inline equations are scaled down to 100% (previously were same as display equations, i.e. 125%) KNOWN ISSUES: - Some symbols may not render properly (instead, formula source is shown in red) if you are logged in to Wikipedia and the math rendering option is not set to 'LaTeX'. See issue on GitHub for details https://github.com/bgromov/wiki-mathjax/issues/20 (Thanks to Florian Pfaff). - Symbols which are not a part of display equation, i.e. not typed in between <math>...</math>, but right after it, will be displayed from the next line. This is along with LaTeX markup rules and won't be fixed. - (Fixed) Fraction bar is oversized on scaled pages in recent versions of Chrome (e.g. 21.0.1180.75), this is a bug in MathJax/Chrome and not related to extension. • (2021-12-16) David Gilbertson: Works OK on it's own, but when combined with the "Dark Reader" extension, the formulas end up a different colour to the rest of the text, making it mostly unusable.
  • (2018-05-13) P West: Could this please work with the: https://www.wikiwand.com/es/Teorema_de_Noether wikiwand version of Wikipedia?
  • (2017-06-24) Nick Pappas: A MUST! Begone ugliness!
  • (2017-05-11) Simone Scanzoni: Without this extension formulas with the dark theme of Wikiwand are black on dark grey background, very hard to read, but with this they become white as the surrounding text. However the zoom function of the extension becomes unusable, because it keeps the white text but on a white background.
  • (2016-12-28) Christophe Vardemme: ne fonctionne pas
  • (2016-05-06) Juan José: It's OK, but has minor problems: Depending on your zoom some equations are partially cut. And some equations are not rendered, check this sample: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teorema_de_Noether
  • (2016-05-05) Shuhao Cao: Nice rendering! If only the size matches the wikipedia's own mathjax rendering.
  • (2016-04-05) Lu Wang: Excellent! I expect a soon solution to the Wikiwand bug. Thank you~
  • (2016-03-27) Mitch Allain: Hi Boris, This is an excellent extension! Thank you! Would there be any way to extend the functionality to WikiBooks?
  • (2016-03-22) Guillaume Beaud: This extension can translate wikipedia formulas into LaTex code I can't believe it ! Thanks a lot for this absolutely wonderful extension, this saves me hours of tedious work !
  • (2016-01-30) Matt Burnham (MxMattyB): Fails on https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Impedance_matching&oldid=690288951
  • (2015-12-28) Luboš Motl: MathJax simply looks better. A similar extension should exist for many more - or all - web pages such as the DISQUS windows where LaTeX is banned even on MathJax-supporting blogs.
  • (2015-12-17) Sascha Eulert: works!
  • (2015-10-13) Sami L: This is an outstanding extension! I would hope to get one for http://math.stackexchange.com!
  • (2015-07-01) Carlos Alvarez: Buena
  • (2014-11-06) Alex W.: Works great. Functionality is built into wikipedia as a user preference, but wikipedia logs you out every once in a while so it's useful to have this. It stopped working during the previous version but it's working great again now. Update: It's stopped working again in certain cases. Seems wikipedia has adopted some nonstandard macros, like "lang/rang" instead of "langle/rangle" and "infin" instead of "infty", that don't get rendered correctly with this extension. Wikipedia now has a new "MathML" renderer that also has errors (but different ones), but their builtin MathJax renderer still works fine.
  • (2014-03-24) Shi You: Please display each formula in \[\] format. It would be better to see
  • (2014-03-10) Rex Pan: Greate work, it is good. I had used it for a while. But I gonna remove this, because Wikipedia has supported Math render by MathJax. You could opt in in the Beta section.
  • (2013-12-23) Xiaodi Hou: Can't imagine a reason not to have this gadget!!
  • (2013-12-16) Eyal Yoli Abs: F****** awsome!!!
  • (2013-11-06) B. D.: Integral sign in outlined equations is diplayed incorrectly (too small)
  • (2013-10-13) Blake Griffith: Yep this is great. Equations are much better looking. Zooming is great. right click view tex source is great.
  • (2013-06-15) Anton Kaplanyan: Great add-on. Especially useful if you have non-default zoom settings (large monitor, high resolution).
  • (2013-02-19) Hu Zheng (Colliot): Great. But please add other wiki websites like wikibooks.
  • (2013-02-11) 张筗劺: You know it is really great because in China pictures on wikipedia are blocked.
  • (2012-11-21) stephan caamano: Great extension! works nicely with a color inverter for nighttime math studying.

  • (2020-12-26, v:0.0.13) Andrea Di Pietro: Problem with wikiwand
Error to rendering math in wikiwand. The same page, in wikipedia, is rendered correctly (Example page: https://www.wikiwand.com/it/MOSFET - Corrente di sottosoglia - 3rd line)

Does not work on wikiwand at all.
  • (2018-12-22, v:0.0.13) Hermenegildo Pomponio: FireFox port of an upcoming release
Would you consider publishing an upcoming version of the plugin on the FireFox add-on store? I am sure the community would highly appreciate the reading comfort that your plugin procures. I installed the extension from the chrome store using 'Chrome Store Foxified' and the result looked ok, besides the slight font distortion, which origines I did not further investigate.
  • (2016-08-25, v:0.0.11) Sebastian Ørsted: Huge bug! Wrong rendering together with Wikiwand
Look at the page https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Kazhdan%E2%80%93Lusztig_polynomial#/Definition Specifically, look at the equation right after the text “The Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials can then be computed recursively using the relation”. It is rendered completely wrong with your extension; one of the {} pairs in the original equation has been replaced by (), causing huge changes to the formula. This does not happen without Wikiwand.
  • (2016-08-22, v:0.0.11) Sebastian Ørsted: Compatibility with Wikiwand
I combine the extension with Wikiwand (with dark background), and fortunately, the extensions turn out to be compatible. However, in order for the math to be rendered with MathJax, I always need to load the page twice (and until I do, the equations are black on a dark background and hence unreadable). Moreover, clicking on the math opens an enlarged version of it, which is white on a white background and hence even more unreadable.

Instead of correctly rendering math, I get u−hatequalsthevectorudividedbyitslength This is happening on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_vector The above example is the first indented math text.
  • (2012-10-21, v:0.0.2) Christopher Veltman: Not really a "bug" but it hurts functionality
The ext. is awesome, btw. It was exactly what I need and I got really excited about it...till I went to wikipedia and nothing happend! What really baffled me is that I was on another wiki-like site and it had worked there. I read the description several times and I couldn't figure out for the life of me why it wasn't working. I was about to chalk it up to the fact that it hasn't been out long and probably has some bugs when I looked up and noticed https. Sure enough when I went to to their unsecured site, everything worked great. Im not sure if you were aware of this or not due to how long its ben out but I didn't see anything on the page so I dropped a note -christopher
