Image from store Ancestry Media Download
Description from store Ancestry.com has never created a good system to back up the data that is on their site. The only option people have is to download the GEDCOM file, which is often a mere fraction of the data they have invested in the site. This extension allows you to screen scrape your media files in an automated fashion. You should clear all files out of your default downloads folder before using this extension so you know that all downloaded files belong to Ancestry. This extension does not work on MACs due to the way MACs handle clicking the middle mouse button. Follow the support site if you wish to assist in finding a solution to this problem. • (2022-06-04) Michelle Hynes: It is an initial impression abnd willing to upgrade my rating. The extension says it downloading media but I cant find the file anywhere. I have my default folder set correctly. I really want this to work!
  • (2022-05-28) Randi DuFresne: I wish it worked for me. Can't figure out why it doesn't. Put the extension on Chrome - didn't work. Removed it and tried again, followed instructions, nothing happens. Frustrating.
  • (2022-03-26) markinsydney: Chrome, PC, March 2022. You MUST be on the Photos or Stories tab (not All Media) for this extension to work. It worked a treat and all my media has been downloaded. Thank you Jereme for this great contribution to geneology.
  • (2022-01-01) Kiwi Steve: Does what it says on the box - saved me a ton of work. The only annoyance, which I think is a Chrome thing and Firefox might be better here - I had to click SAVE for each file it downloaded - I just sat there and clicked as each one came up... no biggie, but slightly annoying - I just don't think thats a big price to pay for being able to get all the media from my tree so I can start using an offline program (trying Family Historian 7) and start saving myself hundreds of dollars a year on Ancestry fees! Thanks Dev, this is awesome.
  • (2021-08-26) Michael G. O'Connell: I gave it 4-star because it started as a 5-star then, I believe that Ancestry caught on and blocked it. This was on a Mac running OSmac High Sierra. Has anyone else experienced Ancestry shutting this extension down? Any ideas on how to get around that?
  • (2021-07-18) Joe P.: This extension saved me a lot of time!! Two things to be aware of: 1) at first I thought it didn't work, but then I realized I was on the "All Media" page instead of the "Photos" or "Stories" pages. It's not compatible with the "All Media" page. If it doesn't work for you the first time, make sure you're on the correct page in the gallery. 2) while the extension is running, it basically takes over your browser. You cannot click to a different tab or a different window because this extension is literally automating the process of clicking each item and downloading it. So, every time it "clicks" on an image to download it, the window with ancestry.com on it jumps to the front as the active window. So, use this extension only when you do not need to use your browser at the same time. It does allow you to stop in the middle of downloads, which is nice. Great extension! Thank you!
  • (2021-01-30) Jennifer Gunderson: Brilliant. Use Windows to download all without having to click to save each one. Works on Mac but only one at a time. Took 3 minutes to download 100 files.
  • (2020-12-28) Sarah Le Page: Excellent - working on a Mac and I have managed to capture the hundreds of images I have saved to Ancestry over the years, so that I can link them to my offline GEDCOM files.
  • (2020-11-15) Telva Chase: WORKS BEAUTIFULLY It could be people don't know how to follow directions and that's why it doesn't work for them. I had the same problem originally but went back and followed the directions. Open the tree you want to download stories/photos. To the left of the name of the tree (upper left-hand corner) hover over the tree icon and select MEDIA GALLERY and then Stories or Photos. This is where you want to run this app from. Then in the upper-right hand corner of your browser window is a black puzzle-looking-like icon. click on it and select Ancestry Media Download. It will automatically start downloading the stories or photos. When it's completed, select the other (stories and photos) and repeat. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. You saved me nearly a year of downloading these as I had over 7000!!
  • (2020-07-25) Trish Loughman: Currently downloading my files. Great little tool - and keeping my filenames! A lifesaver after a death of a hard drive. Thank you so much for your work on this.
  • (2020-06-29) Michael M: Just what I needed. Thanks for doing what ancestry should have provided.
  • (2020-06-27) Kari W: Amazing! Took 700 files about 22 minutes to download. Saved me so much time! Thank you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

  • (2019-12-15) Stacey Mitchell: I have thousands of photos and have to hit save for every photo. It does save time from having to click on each one and save it. I couldn't figure out how to stop part way through to come back later and finish it without shutting Chrome down. Overall, I recommend it.
  • (2019-08-09) Guy Jeffries: Worked first time, 200+ pictures all downloaded at full resolution in about 10 minutes or so. Excellent.

Extension was installed into the latest Chrome and when going to the correct page of photos or stories and then click Download Media, the screen refreshes, but then nothing seems to happen.
