Description from extension meta

Hide built-in categories on Mint.com

Image from store Mint.com - Customize Default Categories
Description from store Mint does not natively let you remove any default categories or sub-categories, although you are free to add and remove any custom sub-categories you want. Since many built-in categories may not be applicable to your financial setup, this creates unnecessary clutter when organizing your transactions. If you don't own a business or do not have kids, for example, there is no logical need to have those options always show up in a list. This addon gives you control over these built-in categories. You can hide any sub-categories and even top-level categories that you do not wish to see. Does not contain any tracking, analytics, ads, etc. It's free and open source, so feel free to post any problems or feature requests on the GitHub page. https://github.com/schrauger/mint.com-customize-default-categories

  • (2022-06-08) John Kleckner: Update: This extension no longer works, now that Mint has updated its UI (for the first time in YEARS). A fix would be immensely appreciated, if possible! This extension is a godsend; Mint's categories are an absolute nightmare for tidy/minimalist users. Thank you!
  • (2022-02-26) Brooks Pistole: Very good extension! Works equally well in Edge.
  • (2020-01-26) Lauren Teschendorf: This extension does just as promised. I have been a Mint user for 10 years and keep looking for alternative options for the budget because of the excessive budget categories. Just added this to Chrome and followed the directions and voila! My budget is set up exactly as I hoped! Super excited to use this. Thank you developers for creating this!!

  • (2022-02-26, v:1.4.5) Brooks Pistole: Mint rules
Have you or has anyone you know of been able to enhance rules so that they can be based on "description contains" instead of "description equals"? Mint has ignored my requests for an enhancement.
  • (2022-01-13, v:1.4.5) Haleigh Scott: Hidden Categories still showing
I've selected the categories I want to be hidden, but when I am working under transactions, they are all still showing up even after I save it.
  • (2021-01-07, v:1.4.4.1) Taylor Mokris: Loans Category not showing up
Not sure why but when I edit the Loan category it no longer is showing up on the Transaction tab of Mint as a eligible category, it's the only one that has completely disappeared...?
  • (2020-06-05, v:1.4.4.1) Chelsea Honnens: Not Working :(
This is not working for me. I've got it installed, but there's no "Edit Hidden Categories" showing up
  • (2020-05-31, v:1.4.4.1) Martha: mint default categories
Before I make any changes, I'd like to understand the ramifications a little better. For instance, you know how Mint defaults to listing bars under "alcohol & bars"? If I delete all subcategories except for "restaurants" and "groceries," how do you think Mint will default tag a transaction at a bar? Also, even if "alcohol & bars" gets hidden, would Mint still default to tagging it in the hidden category? Just want to understand how this all works before I go monkeying with all the default categories. Appreciate your help!
