The New Tab Extension for Developers

Image from store Initab
Description from store Initab is a new tab extension that replaces Chrome's new tab page with a dashboard of useful tools to make your job as a programmer easier. Get a quick view of your GitHub/GitLab Issue activity, Stack Overflow activity, and much more... Features: * Getting started with Initab is easy. Open the SETTINGS panel and configure your preferences. CUSTOM LINKS are a popular (optional) feature that you might consider activating. Simply add some valid URLs or Markdown URLs to the CUSTOM LINKS section in the SETTINGS panel. The DATE & TIME section then gets replaced with your custom links. Don’t forget to try the optional TAB LIMITING feature. It automatically keeps your browser tabs limited to the number you choose by closing older tabs. Some like it, some don’t…so be careful. * Do you find yourself constantly hunting around for the GitHub Issue or Pull Request you're currently working on? Initab pulls your GitHub activity directly from your history, so you don't have to worry about closing the tab associated with that issue and/or pull request. Simply open a new tab and you'll see the item right there in your GitHub Issue/PR Activity. * Oh, you don't use GitHub? You're more of the GitLab type, huh? Well, Initab has you covered! Quickly toggle between GitHub and GitLab as your preferred Issue and Pull/Merge Request tracker. * Whoops! You accidentally closed the tab with the Stack Overflow answer that could help you out of the mess you’re in… Don’t worry, Initab has you covered there too. Click this button to toggle the Stack Overflow panel which is populated with all of your recent S.O. history. * Cover all your browser history bases with the RELEVANT HISTORY section. Do you want to see articles or blog posts you've visited related to a specific technology? Add a keyword in the RELEVANT HISTORY section in the SETTINGS panel. * Do you have a favorite SubReddit for the technology you love to work with? Add your preferred r/… in the SETTINGS panel, in order to keep tabs on whats going on in Reddit today. * Do you need quick access to your commonly used code snippets that you have available in your Gist account? Simply enter your GitHub username and Initab will fetch all public Gists related to your account. * Keep up to date with the hot new GitHub repos for the technology that you’re interested in. Trending New Repos fetches the most starred GitHub repositories that were created in the last month. * Scratch Pad - a super simple note taking app that is available to you with every new tab you open. * Code Playground - now you can create projects and quickly hack around from within Initab. ------------------------------------------- 1/26/2020 - Latest 1.7.2 - 1.7.13 Release Notes: * Fixed a bug where some users are seeing a blank page in every new tab (Sorry about that one). * Minor UI Updates & Bug Fixes 11/17/2019 - Latest 1.7.0 - 1.7.1 Release Notes: * Unlocked Code Playground for all users (no Twitter verification required) * Minor UI Updates & Bug Fixes 1/26/2019 - Latest 1.6.0 - 1.6.4 Release Notes: * Code Playground Panel - Now you can create projects and quickly hack around from within Initab. * Minor UI Updates & Bug Fixes 11/17/2018 - Latest 1.5.0 - 1.5.1 Release Notes: * Custom Links now support Markdown URL format to allow for cleaner formatting if desired. • (2023-09-14) Angelo Perera: You have to pay $1.99/month for this to not bombard you with ads and be even slightly useful
  • (2023-09-12) WaD LiaG (自由人): Maybe more customization and add Chinese
  • (2023-08-21) Paul Hodges: I liked the overall extension but would've been better if you could hide the reddit tab and could change the placement of the different widgets.
  • (2023-08-21) Time-Travelling Fairy: It's a great new tab for developers! I'd like it if the loading screen would adjust depending on what colour theme the user is using (dark if using a dark theme, light if using a light theme, or toggleable separate from the theme itself), as having it always be white is a bit of a flashbang every time I open a new tab. Being able to load in actual RSS feeds (via OPML or something similar) would definitely be handy too, since Google Alerts isn't the most reliable thing.
  • (2023-08-19) Scott: Anything That appears in my new tab page must be pretty damn good and I have to say this does fill that spot. My only suggestion is to make the custom link icons / text resize to fill the available area. So there is something larger to click on with my laptop trackpad!
  • (2023-08-14) Loona Richmond: In-app purchases and a subscription service was added
  • (2023-08-10) Alexander Kurganov: It would be great if the sidebar could shrink to the size of icons, I already remember where what item is and I don't need captions taking up the screen It would also be cool if it was possible to disable some parts in the settings, for example I don't need reddit here, I have a separate app for it on my phone. And in general this is a delightful extension, I like it very much, I did not find a donate button, for such work I want to thank you financially.
  • (2023-07-14) Vĩ Nguyễn Nguyên: Great!
  • (2023-06-21) mike fraziar: good to use~~~

  • (2023-04-26) Mark Knight: Extra good if you use Edge and need to replace that awful news feed..Cheers!
  • (2023-04-19) Samuel Lawerence J: Good extension.
  • (2022-11-06) N O (Body): I like it, honestly. And I liked it even more after I added my own background-image: url(https://www.blablabla.bla/bla.jpg); to the first 'themeBG1' line in the main.css file, then uploaded the unpacked extension in developer settings mode so it will save my background. Now It's great.
  • (2022-06-28) Parakeet709: Very recommended for devs! Now I can see github at a glance, access stackblitz, notes, reddit, and relevant history based on keywords. 5/5, great work!
  • (2022-06-27) Hedge Hox: good, I like it! but It would be great if you add section to remember some urls, which comes handy when somebody needs to quickly attend everyday meeting or in general a meeting
  • (2022-06-26) Yassine: Hello, great extension. Nicely done. Any chance you can add the option to add comma separated subreddits or search keywords? Thanks.
  • (2022-05-25) Jordan: Awesome application have a few questions, Is this open source? I would love for there to be an option to create our own themes, but if not I would love a gruvbox material theme to be added
  • (2022-02-12) Samiul Nahiyan: this is very awesome. but i will be veryhelpful if we have custom options like we can turn off the RELEVANT STACKOVERFLOW HISTORY and change the position of clock and change backgorund and fonts and hide the setting bar all together this is kinda best
  • (2021-10-22) bob ross: I really like this extension, and it makes my browser feel more inviting, especially for me. Perfect for developers & scrolling your favourite subreddit!
  • (2021-10-13) Lucas Rocha (Luke66): Perfeito!!!!
  • (2021-08-31) Yogev Nachshon: Love it! 10x!
  • (2021-08-12) Kyle Finley: Overall, a great new tab app. I wish this were open source so that others can contribute new features. A few feature requests: - ability to group links into categories or "folders" that can be folded/unfolded - ability to disable reddit column - deeper github integration (e.g. options to show notifications, stars, pinned repos) - ability to disable/limit relevant history - keybinds and/or command pallet for quicker navigation
  • (2021-08-07) Ayush Katyal: Best new tab app. Productive for devs
  • (2021-06-01) Sajag Kamthan: Loved it, But when I minimise my browser everything is merged, in simple words it is not responsive please make it responsive...It is an extension for programmers and not responsive, why? Please make it responsive...PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!!...
  • (2021-05-12) Weston Johnson: Great idea, but would be better if Initab took on some of the feature requests here. Looks to be abandoned.
  • (2021-05-07) Giancarlo Ventura: Excelente extensión, ojalá tuviera más de un subrredit para ver, algo así como todos mis subrredit en uno
  • (2021-05-04) Bram Evert: The best browser homepage
  • (2021-03-16) Adityaa ravi: Hello! I loved it... Just a few of suggestions: 1. give an option to hide any/all of the feeds -- such the the github feed or the reddit feed 2. An option autohide the bar with the settings would be quite nice 3. Option to have two relevant history tabs 3. Ability to replace any of the feeds/locations with the useful links -- not just the clock But either way, i think this is going to be my new tab pages for a long long time...
  • (2020-12-25) Stéphane Busso: lovely!

  • (2020-10-28) hacker 19374: This is so cool!! I just got it and it has everything I need for my coding! Github, Stack, Reddit, and notes. I would give this a 10/5 but sadly, I can't. Great work Initab!!
  • (2020-10-14) Michael Lawski: this is a very useful extension
  • (2020-09-18) Santiago Toscanini: Es genial, estaría bueno que se pudiera correr otros lenguajes que no sean web
  • (2020-08-17) รณชัย ชายผา: cool
  • (2020-08-13) Kunal Bhagawati: This is a work of art more than just a chrome extension. I'd even be willing to pay a small amount to get rid of the ads. :)
  • (2020-06-26) altry: i like it. i wish there were an option to toggle on/off the features I don't plan to use.

  • (2020-03-18) CHAITANYA KUMAR REDDY: Very helpful for developers.
  • (2020-03-12) Borhan Uddin: I really love it.
  • (2020-03-10) Kartik Sharma: Oh my god! I spent the whole day trying to find a good productivity focussed extension all day today. I found momentum, leoh, etc. However, i didn't know that THIS was what i needed!!! I stumbled upon this by pure chance and i absolutely love it! However, i would love it if i could add multiple keywords in my "relevant search history". If you consider open-sourcing this, i would be more than happy to contribute!!
  • (2020-03-05) Bhumesh D: It would be better if it have Label instead of URL for CUSTOM WEB LINKS
  • (2020-02-20) Abhishek Hamal: As far as i can see, everything is great. Besides the paid ad-removal option cited by many users, I'd also like to put some emphasis on more theme-ing options.
  • (2020-02-16) Dean Lofts: I didn't know I even needed this.
  • (2020-02-12) Muhammad Dayan: awesome
  • (2020-01-30) Ebubekir Tabak: For running on Vivaldi: Settings/Tabs/ check "new Tab page feature" and "controlled by extensions".

For example, the Reddit post title: "Do tech companies value leetcode skills > side-projects?" Renders as: "Do tech companies value leetcode skills > side-projects?"
  • (2020-01-25, v:1.7.2) Nick: Customizability + no ad option
Needs to be more customizable- I don't use reddit so I'd like to remove that whole section, I much prefer having my new tab screen have a light theme to match the rest of the web, and so on. Would be good to bring out the notepad to the main screen rather than bury it in a tab. Would like the custom links to be a bit larger. The ads are carbon so they're not completely tasteless but I'd like them gone anyway. I would be willing to pay for the ability. Proper GH integration (using github personal access token or even a more official app connection method) would also be nice, you could provide notifications and live updates rather than rely on browser history. Overall, a lot of potential, I've been looking for a dev-oriented new tab page like this for a long time- I've unfortunately had to rely on the default Chrome newtab bookmarks to drive my daily productivity as I have yet to find anything more capable (and the built in bookmarks suck). I would ask that before adding any new features, try to refine the experience a little- let us move/hide things, light theme, no ads, that's pretty much all I need before I'm ready to use it on a daily basis.
  • (2019-11-21, v:1.7.1) Marius Van Nieuwenhuyse: Don't work since a few days
Sorry but your extension isn't working right now
  • (2019-11-20, v:1.7.1) Daniele Del Giudice: Blank page
I've been unable to use Initab for a few days. Is there a way to add multiple subreddit and keywords to search from. I tried space and comma separated didn't work, anything else? Btw, the idea is really great, loving it already!

  • (2019-01-29, v:1.6.4) Jeroen Bouma: Love it but would like a few more customizations
I would really like it if we could alter the 'GitHub' window on the right with different platforms. For example I have times that my Stack overflow history is more relevant to me and therefore it is really beneficial if it can be placed on the right side instead of under 'Settings'. Other than that, Initab is amazing!

  • (2019-01-25, v:1.6.3) Todd Saylor: Support enterprise Github
Great extension! But my company uses an internal/enterprise Github which is hosted locally, so instead of github.com it's git.some-internal-url. Any chance of allowing a configurable Github URL so we can support this type of environment?

I can't browse through repos that are specified as "Unknown Languages" if you were to look at github.com/trending page. Also having small list of most popular keywords onto click would be nice touch.
