Description from store "Auto Tab Discard" is a lightweight browser extension that automatically reduces the amount of memory used by open but inactive tabs, helping to conserve battery life on portable devices by disabling JavaScript code and DOM events on discarded tabs. Preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ityhxUPp3y8 Instruction: There are two options on the extension's interface to either discard tabs or release discarding (the "x" buttons) The features of "Auto Tab Discard" are: * Improves browser performance and reduces memory usage by automatically or manually discarding inactive, idle, or forgotten tabs. * Includes a list of hostnames or regular expressions that can be excluded from auto-discarding. * Preserves the discarded state of tabs when the browser is closed and reopened. * Indicates the discarded state of a tab through the favicon or title. * Restores the state of a tab, including scroll position and text box content, after it is released from being discarded. * Allows for the forced discarding of specified hostnames. The options for configuring whether tabs should be discarded or not include: * Pinned tabs * Tabs that are playing media * The presence of a power source * Unsaved content or user input in a tab The available plugins for "Auto Tab Discard" are: * Release the discarded state of the next or previous tab. * Release the discarded state of all tabs in the active window. * Automatically discard all newly opened inactive tabs. * Store YouTube's timestamp before a tab is discarded. * Permanently delete (remove) old discarded tabs that are inactive. Notes: * Unlike the "The Great Suspender" extension, this extension uses the native method for discarding tabs, which means that even if the extension is removed or the browser crashes, your browser will automatically restore everything for you.
  • (2024-01-24) Alex Ognenskiy: Great extension ty. It might be helpful to have an option to "discard tabs in the collapsed group"
  • (2024-01-24) DAVID GUALDRON: Amazing! Thank you so much for this extension!
  • (2024-01-23) Nicole Ahmed: This is excellent. Makes my computer run much cooler and protects from Chrome hogging resources from other applications. I use it conjunction with a tab group/management extension too. Very customisable. Lots of options. highly recommend.
  • (2023-11-16) Seanmamasde: too damn good
  • (2023-06-06) Rex Cope: It's nice when it works, but it's always been pretty wonky, and it's honestly been getting worse with time. Whitelisting sites for just the current session instead of permanently has never worked, and it has always been pretty random in what tabs it chooses to discard. It constantly will immediately discard a tab as soon as I switch away from it. Repeatedly. While I'm switching back and forth. But for the last month or so it's started even discarding the tab that I'm on at the time. Seriously, I will be reading something, and suddenly the page disappears. Today's instance really takes the cake though. I was on a YouTube tab, a video was playing, and I was writing a comment. That's 3 reasons at once that it shouldn't have discarded the tab, but it did it anyway. It's one step short of crashing the browser. Actually, it might as well just be that.
  • (2023-06-04) doban dunivan: i use opera GX and in it there is no function to turn off tab snooze when you havent gone back to the tab for a few minutes and I find it really annoying on sites like youtube so i have it on a permanent whitelist so it never snoozes itself and this extension works for that
  • (2023-05-23) Clemens Ratte-Polle: nice :) And all tabs are safe even if addon is crashing or disabled :) Missing: - by deactivating a tab it has to jump not only to the left tab but to the last active, or nothing. - option to reactivate tab only by click into the window not always by choosing the tab. - ATD should not only accept Hostnames in the Whitelist but alos exakt URLs.
  • (2023-05-04) Rick Tashma (DenverRick): Have been using this extension for several months and I really like it. Chrome is *much* friendlier on my workstation. Am not a sysadmin, programmer, etc, but I do have reasonable geek chops. Most of my need is to have around 100 tabs queued across windows so I can move from one project to another, but with only a small number of tabs (such as a specific subset of GMail or LinkedIn URLs) remaining active at all times. The tool is nicely configurable, and I particularly appreciate how the Exceptions supports regular expressions. Thx much!
  • (2023-03-24) Jahir Fiquitiva: Please add support for Arc browser. Some tabs are discarded even when active, and pinned tabs are also discarded
  • (2023-03-23) Sreithel: Does what it says on the tin and saves me what would otherwise be 15 gigs of RAM down the toilet. Keeps Chrome from turning my 5600X into its chew toy. Browser no longer hangs into oblivion when I load up my 3200 tabs on startup (*1/3 is Japanese vocab...).
  • (2023-03-13) Kyle F.: Depending on your needs/wants if using Google Chrome, you may not need this extension anymore, and it could conflict if you don't disable chrome's new memory saver. Recent versions of Chrome/Chromium have a memory saver feature now that users can toggle and set some rules on: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/12929150?visit_id=638143379493077833-2992852545&p=chrome_memory_saver&rd=1#memory_saver&zippy=%2Cturn-memory-saver-on-or-off
  • (2023-03-13) Matt Schmidt: Works great! And fully customizable.
  • (2023-03-10) Japhy Ryder: I like to report a conflict with another extension, which causes some settings of Auto Tab Discard to be overruled. Installing the Tab Activate extension (which opens a new tab immediately instead of in the background) will cause Discard Pinned Tabs at Startup and Discard Unpinned Tabs at Startup to break; all tabs will load at startup regardless of the aforementioned settings and overwhelm the cpu. Disabling Tab Activate will resolve this problem. I will also report this to the developer of Activate Tab. Tab Activate: chrome://extensions/?id=jlmadbnpnnolpaljadgakjilggigioaj
  • (2023-03-04) P. P.: very good! Many options :) Missing is the option how to open links in background tabs.
  • (2023-02-14) Scott F: Edit: I'm getting really frustrated with this addon as it doesn't seem to follow some of the rules for discarding. I find it discarding tabs where I have forms that I've filled out but haven't submitted, and it will often instantly discard tabs when I leave the page. I'm getting pretty close to ditching it. --- OP: Just installed and it seems to work as advertised. Currently on work computer so I don't have any intensive tabs open to try it with, but the ones I discarded did disappear from the Chrome Task Manager. The only thing I'm not seeing is a way to have discard options in tab right-click context menus. I would like to see that so I don't have to remember the hotkey or use the extension button to discard tabs.
  • (2023-02-12) Marc M.: Seems not to be able to disable tabs in private mode anymore.
  • (2023-02-07) Andrei Schapov: Why does it discard a PINNED TAB, when I specifically set the option not to? Quite useful otherwise
  • (2023-02-06) Joanny Raby: does not seem to be working anymore for me (Chrome), it was working good up to recently if I remember correctly.
  • (2023-01-18) Jason H: I want so much to love this extension. And I've given it a good go (maybe had about two years?) but every so often it just stops listening to the settings I have in the options setup. Whitelisted domains get discarded. Pages with open forms get discarded. And here lately it seems as soon as I move to a different tab, the tab I was just on previously, like just seconds later gets discarded right away. I have tried futzing with the options. I have tried removing it and re-installing it (and that seems to usually work temporarily ... until it doesn't). I shouldn't have this much trouble with an extension. So I'm now on the hunt for a replacement - after too many repeatedly lost productivity caused by this extension.
  • (2023-01-16) Dave Thomas: Version works very well, especially with Vivaldi. Works much better than previous versions. I hope the developers see this, and don't break it in future releases. Would like to see an option to immediately discard a tab as soon as it loses focus, as I have many (over 600) tabs usually open and have to manually discard a tab when I am done with it to keep memory usage low.
  • (2023-01-12) Jeff: This App does what it claims, efficiently and effectively. You can even save your settings, import and export them. My previous preference for Chrome cookie management was Vanilla Cookie Manager, which doesn't exist anymore. I needed a replacement. This is roughly equivalent, with a few additional check boxes in the settings that could have been explained a little better. if you're a technical professional you should be fine.
  • (2023-01-05) NbA1992: top extension i use it for years. BUT it discards pin tabs, and it shouldn't.
  • (2022-12-27) benjamin957957: Very nice extension. Does what I want it to do. Suspend tabs but when restored save their scroll position.
  • (2022-12-25) GamerKingHD: Never had something bad to say about this extension. I've been using it for the past year or so without a single issue. Tabs as expected will go to sleep after I don't use them for god knows how long, I usually have over 80-90 tabs open, and keeps in memory the tabs i frequent. The whitelist works as intended, auto updates are a thing so another point in their favour. Overall happy that I found this addon.
  • (2022-12-19) Davvood: Everything was working nicely until the recent update. The extension simply doesn't work anymore. I hope a fix arrives soon.
  • (2022-12-18) Peter Henry: Great. Only thing missing is the ability to set how many inactive tabs to leave open. Surprised that feature isn't there as this plugin has so many other features.
  • (2022-02-26) Tomáš Fiala: Looks great! Many features and the size is still small. Note to Developer: If I could make one feature, to discard (suspend) new opened tabs before they get loaded. Situation is I open a set of tabs in a new window, usually 30+ and all of them start to load and this make make browser useless in that time.
  • (2022-02-17) Marcelo Tomás: It's perfect! Great job.
  • (2022-02-14) Miyako Jones: It usually works fine, but sometimes it unloads a tab right after I click a different one.
  • (2022-02-10) Arpad Orfi: Works. But I don't like not having a screenshot of suspended/discarded pages. Tab Suspender can do that - I prefer that.
  • (2022-02-06) Anh Khoa Phan: there's nothing to complain about
  • (2022-02-06) Gary Lin: Works, memory usage dropped 25% (4/16GB) with 100 tabs
  • (2022-02-05) Samarth Ashish: just what i needed
  • (2022-02-04) Mr Smith: Does what it claims. Definitely seems to reduce the amount of resources Google uses/
  • (2022-02-03) Naman Bansal: It's a great extension and exactly what I was looking for after The Great Suspender got removed. I just wish it had one more feature. Instead of automatically activating a particular tab once you switch to it, I would rather prefer to click on it to activate it (as it used to be on Great Suspender). Really wish, you would implement it. In any case, great job!!
  • (2022-02-02) F FEPA: ✅ Open source. ✅ Mas ligera en espacio/recursos que The great suspender y Marvelous.
  • (2022-01-14) Ahmed Z: Great replacement for The Great Suspender (which had been found to be spyware). Currently the hovercard feature (which cannot be disabled) causes tabs to wake up. This is annoying because I have to use hovercards to see tab names.
  • (2022-01-07) Darren Mc: Works really well so far!
  • (2022-01-05) Kim Dammers: I tried to load it, but I got . . . This site can’t be reachedThe webpage at https://add0n.com/tab-discard.html?version=0.5.0&type=install might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR
