Custom New Tab URL
Customize the new tab URL.
Chrome doesn't allow you to configure a new tab URL.
It always opens its New Tab Page with a search bar and some browsing history.
With this extension, you can use the options page to store a link to a page or even a path to a local file that will be loaded when a new tab is created.
It is very lightweight and easy to use!
For people who prefer dark mode, try enabling the following Chrome builtin flag:
chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark

ATTENTION:
Since Chrome Version 118.0.5993.71, setting the new tab to a local file requires to turn the "Allow access to file URLs" option in the extension management page. Open the Manage Extension page, find the Custom New Tab URL extension and click the Details button, then find the option "Allow access to file URLs" and turn it on.

Works perfectly w/ one minor annoyance. When opening a new tab, the URL bar is focused/selected/highlighted which means that if you click the URL bar to for example do a search or type an URL the URL end up being: "https://fredriks-startup-page.eu/https://www.hotmail.com" Which ofc. ends up doing the wrong thing. If the extension would focus the page element instead it would get a 5 from me.
Doesn't work for local files. Even default Chrome lets you set the Startup page to a "file://". For anyone seeking a solution to have both startup page and new tab page be a simple offline HTML file - this ain't it.
It works but please add an option to preload a page! Some pages have some javascript and I would like it to work in advance. And maybe with refresh cycle of 10 minutes or so (in case some js changes the content). It would be great!
It works. It is a shame that Chrome Browser almost has a setting to open new tabs to a custom URL. It is so bad, that almost 1/2 a million users have to install an APP to do what should be a standard feature in the Chrome browser.
Works fine for me. It would be better if Chrome had a built-in option to do this, but the extension works fine.
I tried setting the URL to: chrome-extension://edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko/session-buddy.html ... and got a "This page has been blocked by Chrome" error page
Works for one day, then gets turn off by Chrome for some reason. Happens over and over again. BOOOOOOOO
The developers of Chrome, who pretend to listen to what users really want and then go ahead and make changes that nobody but themselves want, did another idiotic choice when not allowing clicking the + to create a new tab with a URL that the user wants it to open to. This extension does it - THANK YOU! It's about time devs made things better and easier to use instead of ruining them and refusing to add features that everyone wants. I changed my homepage because when using a VPN Chrome basically refused to let me go to my old one which was Google.co.uk. Now I have my new tabs go to my new homepage too, something Chrome simply would not allow.
woww about:blank loll it is rlly blank
good
i am getting chrome new tab instead of google.com which is my preferred new tab default. this extension was supposed to help; but unfortunately did not address the issue at all.
I set this up, but every time i open a new tab Chrome now shows a pop-up if i want to change it back..no way to get rid of it so frustratingly annoying
works perfect.............A+++++++
In evaluating this type of extension, I verify whether it will function with an "extension" url (e.g. chrome-extension://somee-extension-id... . This one does. so i'm pleased!
Easy to setup and it is very effective. Highly recommended!
very good and works flawlessly, i personally use it with an html file i wrote. one suggestion would be to make an option so the url bar is empty instead of showing the site url or the file location. aside from that, this is great!
Easy way to change the new tab URL. Recommended.
How do I register a local file? "file:///C:/homepage.html" <- This doesn't work.
I am not sure why people can't figure out how to set the page, the custom URL box is right above the "Chrome pages:" text, it says "URL or local file path" and you enter any URL there and it works fine for me!
Does not work. Tried to set new tab to google.com and gave me an error
Only for these: Apps (chrome://apps/) Blank (about:blank) Bookmarks (chrome://bookmarks/) Downloads (chrome://downloads/) Extensions (chrome://extensions/) History (chrome://history) Memory (chrome://memory-redirect/) Version (chrome://version/) I cannot use it for yandex.ru or google.ru !
Lovely. Just what I wanted.
thank you, it works as advertised. questionably, extensions were disabled on the new tab page. now i can freely use them on the same new tab page.
amazing
Just what I needed. Many thanks.
how do i actually use it??????
I wish there was an option to set if I want to focus on the web page or the address bar, but it's light, not requesting unnecessary permissions, I'll take it :)
Does what it says. Other "new tab" extensions I've tried will refresh your page, so if you open a new tab and start typing a URL, your entered text will get deleted on the refresh. This extension doesn't do that, making it much smoother to open a new tab and immediately start typing.
Very simple and straightforward
Simple and works perfectly! 🤘
Does what it says on the tin
This tool does exactly what it's supposed to, but there's a frustrating 2-second delay every time I open a new page. This slowdown significantly hampers my workflow and disrupts my momentum because I frequently open multiple tabs.
How can i get this to open a url to an installed chrome extension's homepage?
Excellent! Does exactly what it says and explains how to get it working with local files, thank you.
Thank you so much for making this, and For The Instructions on how to get Chrome to use my offline file as a new tab. I spent ages coding my own New Tab page and thought I'd wasted my time but this extension lets me use my own offline HTML file as a 'New Tab' page which is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again, 5 stars.
Doesn't work
Perfect, cant be easier to configure.
It really work!!! Thank you bro. You saved my life
good!!
Ridiculous that chrome needs an extension for this...
Perfect piece of work.
Works exactly as expected.
Pretty simple, does what it says it does and not more instead of trying to do everything. I wanted to have my own custom bookmarks page as a new tab and this delivers. Also, kudos on the quick fix for the local URL that was broken due to chrome update.

Works again
Works again
worked like a charm until the sudden permission change. EDIT: Now works like a charm. Thanks a lot Google for adding that stupid setting.

Hello everyone ... beginning with Chrome 118, extensions will need the "Allow access to file URLs" setting enabled from the chrome://extensions page to open a local file as the new tab page. Every new tab extension in the web store is impacted similarly.
