MetaMask is an extension for accessing Ethereum enabled distributed applications, or "Dapps" in your browser!
The extension injects the Ethereum web3 API into every website's javascript context, so that dapps can read from the blockchain.
MetaMask also lets the user create and manage their own identities (via private keys, local client wallet and hardware wallets like Trezor™), so when a Dapp wants to perform a transaction and write to the blockchain, the user gets a secure interface to review the transaction, before approving or rejecting it.
Because it adds functionality to the normal browser context, MetaMask requires the permission to read and write to any webpage. You can always "view the source" of MetaMask the way you do any Chrome extension, or view the source code on Github:

- I was a user of Metamask since 2018, switching over from MyEtherWallet. It used to be fantastic and fast. Now, it is just a bloated, laggy mess. The devs of Metamask seem adamant at running it to the ground with their half-baked buggy updates the past year. It is quite obvious that their codebase is a spaghetti mess yet they are still piling on the technical debt after debt. It was a good run though, thanks for the memories!

- Was working fine since 2017 or so when I first installed it, until these recent updates started popping up, everything is made worse from UI where you need to dig through to find basic stuff, to constantly crashing, to constantly showing reset database, to sometimes not even allowing to login (you enter the password and no feedback is given, clicking again on it prompts to enter a password again). So ever since updates for token airdrop started landing it became a horror of an app

- Guys, can you please stop breaking it? I understand that eventually there needs to be revenue. But maybe you could find a way which does not alienate your most loyal users. I've been using Metamask since it exists, and the UX degradation is getting so bad that I feel forced to look for an alternative. I'd gladly pay for something like "Metamask Classic" which doesn't bother me with popups and notification, with non-EVM chains (and related UX degradation for EVM chains), with price charts, etc. Simple, fast, secure. I understand that this dark patterns have been normalized in software products over the past decades. But the point of web3 was to do better. If we keep doing the same, we can as well just all go home.

- Getting worse with each update. No, I don't want a Bitcoin or Solana wallet integrated. Allow me to disabled that. Notifications would be nice except for the constant spam. I've tried turning off product notifications but "somehow" it keeps turning itself back on. Latest updates might just be enough for me to uninstall. Yet another example of software that worked fine 5 years ago, but the company needs to justify growing teams, so they continue to add things nobody needs or asked for, each time making the product worse.

- Well, I am actually trying to set up the secret recovery phrase. It says click to view and nothing... no pass phrase appears. The app shuts off when you ask for more information. Frustration is not the way to get me to use this thing.

- As many other reviews mention, the latest update — in my opinion — has completely killed the usability of MetaMask, at least from a developer’s or advanced user’s perspective. Remember, focusing on users also means respecting your current users. You could always offer two modes: advanced and simple. Right now, there are too many layers of abstraction, and advanced users have no control or accurate information over anything. More updates don’t necessarily mean better UX — actually the opposite considering all the bugs I’ve encountered over the past year, probably for pushing updates to quickly... I’m switching to Rabby.

- Metamask must be needed some more wallet security method added like 2fa factor authentication or fingerprint or mail otp required to authenticate any onchain transaction.. My oldest and most usable metamask wallet has been compromised due to lack of security method unavailable.. I lost my 100 usdt that hold in this bot and auto bot set on this wallet so I am forcefully stopped to use in any more further in future... Thats most heart to me because its very close my heart and very hard process to remove that address from multiple website because I farming airdrop from that address.. I must happened with some updates in metamask extension and onchain bridge or connect can compramise most of wallets... I hate metamask and now I decided in future I am not use metamask in conditions....
