  • (2020-02-08) Stanton McCandlish: Interesting concept, but I'm getting buggy behavior, and it has some design/usability flaws, even aside from the bugs. In always-on or ctrl-select mode, on Windows 7 (maybe it's better in other OSes?), the Campa pop-up overlaps the text you are trying to highlight, which is pretty much a "fatal" problem; if you can't tell that you're highlighting the exact text you intend, then this is kind of self-defeating. It also pops up too fast. There needs to be a least a one-second delay, so you can select the text, exactly, that you intend to select, before the extension starts burning CPU cycles and bandwidth trying to load stuff is thinks, mistakenly, that is your intended search string. Response-time should really be set with a slider; older people or those with disabilities might want three seconds, while the average teenager might want half a second or less. Third, this seems to interfere with text selectibility itself. If you try to select a string, but it's not quite what you wanted, Campa pops up and gets in the way. You click away from that, so you can try the selection again, but now you get a "click here" cursor, not a text-selection cursor, and it points to Amazon or whatever Campa is wanting to search, using your previously attempted incorrect search string, even though Campa's pop-up widget is no longer visible. The only fix for this is reloading the entire page and trying again. Finally, the popup itself (even if it were positioned correctly) is unwieldy, with unnecessarily large search-site icons which do not provide any mouse-over text indicating what they are (i.e., you have to memorize what all the icons mean). In context-menu mode, the option is just a "Search on ..." thing that makes the Campa popup appear. This is a with of a waste of time, and it would make much more sense for the context-menu item to instead fly out a submenu with the Campa search options, you can can pick one right there in the menu, rather than pick the "..." option and go back into the document content and wait for Campa's widget to load, then pick something from it (if you can remember what the icons mean). So, I'm likely to uninstall this and hope the developer makes a better-behaving version to try again some other time. If the context-menu version worked as I suggested, I might keep it in context-menu mode, but the other two modes are too malfunctional to use right now, and the present context-menu mode is too time-consuming to bother with.
