Web Paint 3.2 — a rebuilt drawing engine, a new toolbar, and 26 bug fixes

Web Paint lets you draw straight onto any website: circle a bug for a developer, highlight a paragraph while you present, sketch an idea on a blank canvas, then export, print, or screenshot the result. Version 3.2 is the largest update the extension has had. The drawing engine was rewritten, the interface was redesigned, twenty-six reported defects were fixed, and every string in the product was retranslated into all 43 supported languages.

A NEW INTERFACE

The old toolbar has been replaced by a compact floating panel that you drag by its header and park anywhere on screen. It remembers where you left it, and it reshapes itself around the tool you are using: the pen shows a colour row and two sliders, shapes add stroke and fill with a no-fill toggle, spray adds density, and everything else folds away behind an "Advanced" disclosure. Collapse the panel to a small pill when you want the page to yourself, and expand it again with one click. If a page ever pushes the toolbar out of view, pressing Escape brings it back instead of closing your drawing.

NEW TOOLS AND FEATURES

Six tools — select, pen, spray, shapes, text, and eraser — and six shapes: rectangle, circle, triangle, line, arrow, and hexagon.

- An eraser. Drag across any stroke or shape to remove it. Previously the only way to delete something was to select it first.
- An arrow tool, the shape most people reach for when marking up a page for someone else.
- A highlighter-style translucent pen, plus per-tool colour, width, opacity, and drop shadow.
- Editable text. Click where you want it, type, and press Enter. Font size and colour are yours to set; the old tool dropped a fixed block of placeholder text you could not edit.
- Drag-to-draw shapes. Shapes now follow your cursor as you drag instead of appearing at a fixed size in a fixed spot.
- Real PNG export. The drawing exports on a transparent background at full resolution, and page screenshots are a separate, correctly labelled button.
- Per-site drawings. Whatever you draw on a page is saved against that page and comes back the next time you open it, with autosave, so nothing is lost if you forget to press Save.
- Click-through mode. Toggle it to scroll and click the page underneath, then toggle it back to keep drawing.
- Keyboard control: Alt+W opens and closes Web Paint, Alt+Shift+W toggles click-through, Escape steps back out, and Ctrl/Cmd+Z, +Y, +C, +V, +S, and +E cover undo, redo, copy, paste, save, and export.
- Zoom from 25% to 400% with a live readout, canvas backgrounds including a dot grid for whiteboard mode, duplicate and delete for any selection, and screen-reader labels and focus rings throughout.

BUGS FIXED

Three faults that crashed the tool or lost work topped the list. Reloading the toolbar used to bring it back with every slider and colour picker dead, unusable until you closed and reopened it. Pressing Save could silently erase the drawing you had already stored, or save a state you had undone. Pressing Ctrl+V before you had copied anything threw an error.

Undo and redo were rebuilt. Drawing after an undo no longer resurrects the branch you discarded, deletions are now recorded as steps, and undoing to the beginning gives you a clean blank canvas rather than an empty one you cannot recover from.

Other fixes in this release:

- Resizing the window no longer misaligns the ink from your cursor, and the canvas is no longer clipped on short or wide screens.
- Zoom no longer sticks on after you press Shift, and the zoom buttons move in useful steps instead of one hundredth at a time.
- Typing into a text box no longer triggers shortcuts: Delete removes a character, not the whole object, and the arrow keys move the caret.
- Opening Web Paint in a tab or window returns to the surface you already have open instead of opening another one every time.
- The right-click menu on the toolbar icon works again, so the tab, page, window, and popup modes are reachable — and it is translated.
- "Clear all" asks the right question. It previously asked whether you wanted to save.
- The "new" badge is visible, dragging the panel cannot lose it off-screen, accidental clicks no longer leave stray zero-length lines, and pages that cannot be drawn on (the Chrome Web Store, PDF viewer, internal pages) now say so instead of doing nothing.

EVERY LANGUAGE, PROPERLY

All 43 locales carry all 73 strings — 3,139 translations, none falling back to English. Long-standing mistranslations were corrected, including a stroke-width slider labelled with the medical word for stroke in more than twenty languages, "Close" rendered as "nearby", and "clear all drawings" rendered as "clear all blueprints".

Web Paint works offline, asks for no host permissions, and sends your drawings nowhere. Everything stays in your browser.
