Save time on HN by marking read the titles and comments you already scanned
Use this extension to mark all news items in a Hacker News listing page as read. This way, when you reload the page, you will be able to immediately spot the new items that you haven't scanned yet, because only those new items links will show a "not visited" color. You can also hide the items you marked as read.
The data about marked as read items is stored on your local browser and is shared between HN pages: If you mark an item as read on the "news" page and it later makes it into the home, you will see it as read in the home too.
You can also choose to follow the comments of a news item: If you do so, the item will appear (with a different color) in the home page even if it was marked as read. You can mark the comments as read, and read the number of unread comments in the home page.
Last but not least, you can collapse comment threads, and show the parent of a comment you're reading by hovering on the "show parent" link. This way following discussions with lots of comments becomes easier.
Enjoy!

The HN changes in January broke the extension. I sent a pull request to the author, but others having the same problem (and desperate to have it back) can use the temporary extension with the fix, available here: https://github.com/guiambros/HNMarkAllRead https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hacker-news-mark-all-read/fghfahcbhpdeeaaofcefaoodmfejieok?hl=en - (2015-01-25, v:1.4) Arya Soltanieh: Seems to not be working anymore
Used to work perfectly -- Last few weeks something must have changed on HN -- definitely not working anymore - (2015-01-19, v:1.4) stopped working with latest chrome update
clicking on Check to mark all read doesnt do anything - (2012-10-24, v:1.3) Travis Leleu: Interface comes up imtermittently
Hey, love the extension! Very useful. Think I found a bug -- the Mark Read button / interface elements seem to show up randomly on HN pages. The comments component always seems to work, but about half the pages on HN (story listings) don't provide the interface. Seems to be random -- sometimes the home page (/news) works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the non-hardcoded URLs have it (/x?...), sometimes they don't. Thanks!
