Speed up, slow down, advance and rewind HTML5 audio/video with shortcuts
Image from store
Description from store
HTML5 video provides native APIs to accelerate playback of any video, but most implemented players either hide or limit this functionality. This extension fixes that, plus more...
It will help you optimize your video viewing by allowing you to make quick playback speed adjustments, as well as rewind the video to hear the last few second one more time. We don't read at a constant speed, and we talk much slower than we read - there is no reason why we have to listen at a constant speed and at a (very) slow rate.
Once the extension is installed simply navigate to any page that offers HTML5 video, and you'll see a speed indicator in top left corner of the video player. Hover over the indicator to reveal the controls to accelerate, slowdown, or rewind the video (10 seconds + lowers playback speed). Or, even better, use your keyboard:
- S - decrease playback speed.
- D - increase playback speed.
- R - reset playback speed.
- Z - rewind video by 10 seconds.
- X - advance video by 10 seconds.
- V - show/hide controller.
If you prefer other shortcuts, want to change the increment value, or want the player to remember your playback speed in the future, head into the settings page and customize it to your heart's content.

- (2025-09-15) perfo: I think that something is wrong with latest update. While increasing speed (via 'Increase speed' action by 0.1) after re-focusing the video, suddenly the speed seems to be reset, or rather decreased by 1 unit. I don't press any other button, only 'Increase speed' The same happens with 'Decrease speed' action (I have set it to 0.1). When I click couple of times the shortcut key to decrease the speed, it suddenly drops like by 1 unit or so.
- (2025-09-14) Ishu: Superb working without any glitch
- (2025-09-14) Tran Huynh Phuc Thinh (K18 HCM): me loves it
- (2025-09-14) Junior: Max speed is 16x.
- (2025-09-13) Mehmet ÜNAL: It was working fine for 2 years but maybe with new update(i dont know) the reset buttons (R) speed is always returning to 2.5x (should be 1.0). When i check the settings i see its coming back to 2.5 even if i change to 1.0. I am having this trouble for couple days (maybe a week, i didnt use my pc). I think this extension is very helpful but its annoying.
- (2025-09-12) Lukasz CzegoSzukasz: Dangerous extension, avoid!
- (2025-09-11) Nik Friedman TeBockhorst: Extension injects code which sends you to an affiliate site when first visiting many domains. This is ad fraud and also takes money away from actual affiliates, publishers, and content creators. AVOID!
- (2025-09-10) S K: was working perfectly fine, new update has lot off issues, R button not working, you need to click restore default once and save, then make modifications. It worked for me this way
- (2025-09-09) Daniel Chance: After years (?) of using this, suddenly every video is loading at 1.25x speed despite me not changing anything and seeing nothing in the settings to indicate this should be happening, and restarting the browser did nothing. Something is broken.
- (2025-09-09) Siyabend Bartin: The preferred reset speed has been broken recently.
- (2025-09-08) Aline Silva Lima: This extension works great! I noticed that it saves the site exceptions ONLY when there are NO TABS OPEN WITH VIDEOS using the extension. I always closed the browser to test, so I’m not sure if that step is actually necessary. Either way, my exception list is now saved, and I’m really happy with the result.
- (2025-09-07) Ryan: it is not saving my preferred reset speed.
- (2025-09-07) Special The Best: works well
- (2025-09-07) Варлок: Settings are reset when you turn on a video in another tab.
- (2025-09-06) pironiero: doesnt remember any options\settings i put in.
- (2025-09-04) Lynne Whitehorn: Works well. Source analysis shows no spying, which is nice these days. Open source, too. Recommended.
- (2025-09-03) N H: Very good nearly 5 stars. But, sometimes its speed is reset when stopping video by space bar on Udemy.
- (2025-09-03) Lukas Mathias Vieyra Schumann: great! works
- (2025-08-31) Rei Onami: ill watch all in x3 thx
- (2025-08-30) Rohit: worst update
- (2025-08-28) Kahel Mendoza: Useful extension! The only thing I don't like is that you have to save after each edit in the settings or it won't apply the changes.
- (2025-08-28) Sahil Thakkar: New update messed up a lot of stuff. Scrolling on the video speed no longer changes the speed. Sometimes it randomly goes to 0.07x randomly. And pressing R to reset to last used speed doesn't work anymore!!!!!!!!!
- (2025-08-25) shome Jeon: I’m using it very well, but version 0.9.4 often doesn’t load and doesn’t work at all. If it can’t be fixed right away, please roll back the version for now. The occasional bug where it goes back to 0.07 is a bit inconvenient, but version 0.9.4 often can’t be used at all.
- (2025-08-25) Jr Mike: worst update ever
- (2025-08-23) Hunter Robbins: Stopped working. After upgrading my OS, the Video Speed Controller has ceased to work. Even before that, it only worked a fraction of the time. I't just not reliable.
- (2025-08-23) Namajai Hahja: To fix the problem where you cant speed up to a certain you add a new key bind and do increase speed and then you set the key bind and max is set it ranging from 1.0 to 16.0 Still stupid that they change the entire ui like nobody asked for it this extensions is getting worse and worse by time coming
- (2025-08-22) Anurag Kashyap: Video speed keep reverting to 0.07 on jiohotstar.com
- (2025-08-22) Ron B: Was pretty much a perfect extension before and I've been using it for years with custom keybinds. Unfortunately they updated it and now all settings are gone.. I don't think there's any new functionality either so the update was just to make the settings page marginally more colourful :(
- (2025-08-22) Ramin D: I've been using it for years, It's great. One question: What does "Allow event propagation" do?
- (2025-08-21) Force Master: Options/keybinds don't save on the options page. Useful extension otherwise. EDIT 3: I think I got it: if there's a tab with a video actively using the extension's settings, focusing that tab (or playing the video? my video autoplayed on tab-focus.) re-saves the old options that had been set when that tab had first loaded. - for Edit 1, such a tab was immediately next to every options tab I opened, and closing the options autofocused the video tab. - for Edit 2, I had added a tab (this Chrome Store tab) between them; so closing the options then reopening them was no longer focusing the video tab... but then when I did go back to the video, the options reset again. I had to close the video tab altogether, open/set/save options, then reopen the video in a completely new tab. That's when my settings worked. ...I hope I didn't open any other video tabs after installing the extension. They would reset my options. A possible best-practice: set your options, save them, and immediately close the entire browser without even closing the options tab. After that, I suspect relaunching the browser will give all tabs the last settings that were saved. EDIT 2: Ignore the notes below. The options end up resetting themselves later; I haven't determined a trigger for that right now. I wonder if it's asynchronous updates or something, but idk what would be the other source. EDIT 1: Options *sometimes* save when you change exactly 1 at a time; reloading the page appears to be unnecessary. At one point, I was able to change a 1st option, save, change a 2nd option, save, close the options altogether, reopen them... and I saw my changes had been persisted.
- (2025-08-20) Praketh: used to be soo gooodd but it's bad now, I usually use r cap to set to a particular speed but it stopped working now
- (2025-08-20) fash ur: Settings change all the d4-mn time to random4-ss sh-1t, dev wh-at th-e he-ll are you sm-oking
- (2025-08-20) Brian Hahn: It was really good before the last update. But it keeps becoming corrupt, forcing me to repair and lose speed settings. The speed settings are also hard to save because they keep reverting back to default.
- (2025-08-19) Monish C: Works very well, glad it's still being updated.
- (2025-08-18) Lakesh Sahu: Great product, works well, solve real problem of website that have video contents.
- (2025-08-17) nelson lai: When will the dev fix the damn 0.07 issue
- (2025-08-17) Omer Abdullah: This is a helpful tool to control your video speed. Highly recomended
- (2025-08-14) Jaden Greenberg: Basically if you tinker with the settings and get up from your computer momentarily, it only takes that long for the settings to revert to default. This is extremely annoying (in addition to the default 1.7 speed currently happening). Please address both of these concerns. Could be a flawless tool/extension if these sorts of things could be avoided
- (2025-08-13) Vanshit Garg: temporary solution to (0.07x) problem can be solved just by enabling "Force last saved speed" option.
- (2025-08-13) N C: No longer working on Hulu
- (2025-08-12) Oleg Kh: Screw the last update, my settings and bind buttons reset almost every day. But I enjoyed the extension all the time before
- (2025-08-12) sasa: I LOVE THIS
- (2025-08-12) Asim: speed resets to 0.7x automatically after recent update
- (2025-08-10) MrProRock33rus: It's like it's made for YouTube, but it works on any video/gif, etc., but it doesn't work on YouTube itself. Well, it does work, but it constantly causes playback errors, leaving the videos in an endless loading state. Sometimes it happens at ~19 seconds, and sometimes it happens at any other time. Disabling this extension solved the problem.
- (2025-08-09) line over_: last update Fuxxing bug, it plays video at x0.07 speed Even though I manage the setting (R = 1.0), it is reverted to its Fuxxing state(r=0.07).
- (2025-08-08) Anika: Recently having issues on sites like Plex and Youtube. It's started playing Plex videos on 0.07 speed. And with Youtube it restarts the speed to 1 every video now, instead of keeping the same speed. Usually works great but I'm assuming the latest update messed things up.
- (2025-08-08) Aaron Dunbrack: Worked great until latest update, so I'm reverting (for instructions, as mentioned in another review, see the fourth poster of this thread: https://github.com/igrigorik/videospeed/issues/1257)
- (2025-08-08) Charity Osoro: been bugging a lot lately
- (2025-08-06) bap boom: so fxxking good!!!!!!!!!!!!
- (2025-08-04) KirK Lazarus: On many sites, videos start playing at 0.07x speed, and even when moving forward or backward, the speed automatically resets to 0.07x. Latest update ruined it.
