Description from store What is Word Replacer? Word Replacer is a simple extension inspired by the popular 'Cloud to Butt'. It does much more than that, allowing you to create entire lists of replacements and customize them to your tastes. WORD REPLACER HAS RECENTLY UNDERGONE A HUGE UPDATE. And if you didn't like it before, you should give it a second try now. Many annoyances don't exist anymore, and the extension is much more powerful. What is Word Replacer useful for? That depends on you. I initially made the extension for myself, but the increasing number of reviews suggesting novel uses for Word Replacer may give you some insight. Personally, I'd recommend starting with popular replacements such as the XKCD (http://xkcd.com/) ones. They make surfing the web more fun, even more so when you're not expecting them! How do I use it? Detailed instructions can be read from the settings page. Please read carefully the user manual and the about page if there is anything that's not intuitive enough. And if it isn't, please tell me so that I can make it better.

Latest reviews

  • (2024-01-05) Charles Magnuson: This extension breaks Jira. Any time you try to click in a text field, the page crashes because of Word Replacer II. Once the extension is disabled, Jira works fine again. Word Replacer II needs a disallowed URLs list so this problem with Jira can be avoided. Until then, this app is remains broken and unusable.
  • (2024-01-05) Airiana Decker: Trust me and everyone who leaves a review this does not work. I saw this tumblr post about how to do it and it doesn't work. Please give instructions on how to do it because we're all clueless.
  • (2023-11-28) Hadi Sopandi: I like it it works like magic
  • (2023-11-24) pogger man: It works! You just have to refresh the page to make it show up.
  • (2023-11-24) Alana Perry: Using it was a bit confusing but once I figured it out it's great

  • (2023-10-05) Corleone: Расширение работает как надо.

  • (2023-07-29) Delvin H: Can this extension automatically be disabled in google sheets? The other option is to manually add every single site outside of google sheets. This extension breaks google sheets formulas.
  • (2023-06-27) FatheredPuma81: Doesn't work at all.
  • (2023-05-20) Phillip: It's working okay for me with only one minor annoyance. When you click "Settings" it opens the Extension detail page along with the settings dialog. Says it hasn't been updated since 2019 so probably realistic this will change anytime soon. Overall I'm happy with it. It even hides many emojis and other graphics when nothing else works.
  • (2023-05-16) Christopher Howarth: non-functional
  • (2023-05-02) Glen Boonzaier: Does not work on editable fields like text boxes and text areas.
  • (2023-03-09) Op Sec: Please, add an option to keep the new text lower case.
  • (2022-10-24) Linzi Teller: Doesn't have any way to configure replaced words. Clicking "Settings" brings you to the extension details chrome page only.
  • (2022-10-13) Ollie “catdog” Harrelson: used to work great, but recently it absolutely did nothing to a youtube commenter's name (that had a whole uncensored slur in it that i specifically replaced). sooo the feeling of safety i had using it in the past is kinda gone now. tbf this may be a chrome update thing and if it gets patched i'll change this review.
  • (2022-08-30) billy Mr: It doesn't work.
  • (2022-08-18) ろどりゅう: The word replacement feature is great! However, if you tweet on Twitter with this extension enabled, you will have to disable the extension each time you tweet because the cursor returns to the beginning each time you confirm the conversion with the enter key... I would appreciate it if you could improve this point.
  • (2022-07-24) Leland C: "It's fast and it works" are the two chief praises. It's also unintuitive, a bit clunky, and some features don't work the way you expect. I wish the author would open source this so the community could contribute to it.
  • (2022-07-15) AdamA: I decided to use this to help with practicing Swedish. It mostly works well, but in situations where the word I'm replacing is just a single letter it will replace that letter in words. Examples: Change I to Jag it replaces the I in Instagram to Jagnstagram. Also does the same if any replaced word is part of another word. Example: Change Me to Mig it replaces the me in came to camig. Is there a way to stop this?
  • (2022-06-30) S O: indeedなどのサイトでは一部でしか動作しない。タイトルがブロックされない。
  • (2022-02-16) Julie Vankova: I love it. The only problem being, I haven't used it in months and don't remember how to add another word to the list. Cuuld someone help me?
  • (2021-11-10) Tay Caulfield: Perfect for name changes on work/school documents. Unhappy with your legal name or name presented to you online? Use this and you can see your correct name.
  • (2021-09-14) Tiến Phát Nguyễn Hải: great!!
  • (2021-09-08) Chance Finley: I liked this product to be funny, however had to disable it due to it causing issues with StackOverflowTeams when asking a question. It would make the entire screen act as though it was not editable
  • (2021-09-08) 碇天理: Does not work on modern Reddit. It changes the words for a while but reverts back to the original. I'm forced to use old Reddit because of this.
  • (2021-08-31) 碇天理: IMPORTATION DOES NOT WORK! Useless when creating backups! Unfortunate that I have made so many replacements.
  • (2021-08-31) Fluue: Does what it says.
  • (2021-08-14) Camille Sam-Long: It doesn't work I tried everything but nothing change
  • (2021-07-28) Yeimmy Sanchez: excelente
  • (2021-07-19) Ki Zhang: It seems sometime the replacing happens before the page fully loaded. So the new loaded text are not replaced. So some of the words loaded after the replacement are not replaced.
  • (2021-05-28) Zekie: Backspace makes the typing automatically go back to the start but otherwise it's ok
  • (2021-05-28) w8sj1s wjqsjiwi: it doesent work
  • (2021-04-22) Liang: Looking forward to following function: 1. Whitelist/blacklist on chosen websites. 2. Replace across html tag such as: replace "snoop<em>dog</em>" with "little<em>cat</em>" and "snoop<b>dog</b>" with "little<b>cat</b>"
  • (2021-04-20) scoot: works well for me! unlike other extensions this one doesn't bug out on the images on google images. good work <3
  • (2021-04-01) Makenzie NotFound: i couldnt even open it. the tab wouldnt open
  • (2021-03-22) Jordan Lund: Doesn't seem to work anymore. You can add words or phrases to replace and you can enable them, but the settings don't save and no replacements are made. It looks like whatever code was exploited to make this work has been patched.
  • (2021-03-08) Benjamin Dionysus: As many others have said, under certain common circumstances (e.g., writing a facebook post) using this extension causes the cursor to jump to the start of the link at seemingly random intervals, making it impossible to type.
  • (2021-02-18) Frank Collingwood: Crippled input boxes. Cursor jumps around when it's enable, leading to garbled input.
  • (2021-02-01) Riley McConnell: Ever since installing this extension I've had a weird problem with text input fields. The cursor occasionally jumps back to the beginning of words like "This" and "Why" even when Word Replacer II is not supposed to be replacing words or a site. I've had to disable it completely.
  • (2021-01-08) Tara: This just made my day. Thank you!!
  • (2021-01-01) Eric Huang: 增加 wording 後,要按下 "Apply to selected" 才會生效。有點不太順手,但功能沒問題.
  • (2020-12-31) brooke kiernan: i cant find the manual
  • (2020-12-30) Matt Winans: Had to uninstall because it makes cursor jump to the beginning of text type on multi-byte text inputs. Examples are Google Sheets formulas, Discord chat, and also portions of Facebook, e.g. https://www.facebook.com/events/birthdays
  • (2020-11-25) Géza Kiss: Perfect! Does exactly what it promises. You can export and import your rules, thus it enables you not just to store them, but also to create many rules e.g. by a script. (You can e.g. transliterate Arabic letters to Latin letters by inserting a Buckwalter transliteration table in the expected format.)
  • (2020-11-17) DeathByBunnies: This extension has been pretty great! One feature it's currently lacking that would really help would be a way to have certain replacements only happen on certain web domains. A few times I've wanted to replace a word when reading a translated story, but not wanted that word to be translated elsewhere.
  • (2020-11-15) Спектра9: Would be a five star considering the features, but sadly it makes some site load extremely slowly. So I've since used ReplaceR instead, which although has fewer features, but works as intended and does not slow down any website
  • (2020-11-12) Lily Wilkerson: This worked solidly for me for months until recently, when it stopped working on almost every website I visited. There hasn't been any updates in months, so it's likely a Chrome issue, so your mileage may vary. But for the months it worked, it was very consistent and the customization options were very nice.
  • (2020-10-09) T L: I feel bad leaving this review because I have had this extension for a long time now. But sometimes in 2020 it started messing up certain sites. On sites like Facebook I can't type anything because the letters move all over the place. For example if I type "Mary had a little lam, its fleece was white as snow", it would end up "ryhad a little Ma mb it's white as snow! fleecewas" Not sure what is going on but its unusable now.
  • (2020-09-17) Will Be: Don't know if it changed since people left reviews but The UI is super easy and it works! I wish there was a 'Don't replace if part of a word' button on the simple replacement mode though.

  • (2022-12-07, v:2.0.10) Adrian Wood: Multiple carot-movement issues
I've been having weird issues with input fields on sites for *years*, first with Chrome and now with Edge, and I've finally pinned it down to this extension. The issues are different for different sites. With Google Sheets, adding an "=" to a field will keep forcing the carat next to it after every character, mangling anything you type. With Twitter, things are fine... until you type an @username, which pushes the carat to the back of it (easy to manage as long as you're paying attention). Facebook is an absolute mess, with it moving backwards several places every 3 characters or so, except when it doesn't, usually around spaces and the link. I saw another comment that suggested having this plugin skip input fields, which seems like a great solution.

I'm trying to set this up, and the description says to go to the settings page. Well I can't for the life of me figure out where that is! I click on the little gear and see nothing about this extension. I don't see any options for extensions period in the settings for this browser. I've googled it and see no guides on how to do this. • (2022-04-01, v:2.0.10) Ody Fusectore: not replace words in input fields
hey, is there an option not to replace words in input fields? Sometimes, I edit a text in an input field and then this extension has replaced the word. So before saving, I need to remember to undo the change again. More specifically, this happens when: - Create an issue on GitHub that contains a word that is replaced - Open the issue on a new page (word is now replaced) - Click on "Edit" to edit the description (the word is now replaced in the input field) - You can't click save now (or the change is persisted :( )

  • (2021-06-03, v:2.0.10) Paul Thompson: Cursor Issues - You really need to fix this!!
As many others have described, when inputting text on certain sites, the cursor will jump to the beginning of a word or sentence. Use to just happen on my Mac (latest Chrome browser) when I typed a capital letter but now happens with almost every word I type (posts and comments on Facebook). Please fix this as I love being able to filter out profanity from the social media experience.

  • (2020-04-15, v:2.0.10) Jon Valvatne: Input field values are not replaced
When a web page has HTML on the form <input value="x">, the x is not replaced. You probably don't want to replace input typed by the user, but input boxes with values that are present upon page load are used by all sorts of sites to render content, so you end up missing a lot of replacements this way. I suppose it could/should be a user-controlled option to avoid messing with actual workflows that involve loading pre-filled forms or similar.
  • (2020-03-11, v:2.0.10) Elizabeth Fox: Functions in Sheets

  • (2020-01-28, v:2.0.10) Paul Windmill: Unrequested changes
In Google Chrome, standard forms on the web, web pages themselves and search results are changing words e.g. the to teh, that to dat, I to me, known to non - and others. In addition TEMP appears, apparently randomly, in otherwise normal text. I have not used your word replacer and don't know what has caused the problem; which only started about 2 weeks ago. I have rried re-installing Google Chrome and going back to a previous state in Windows 10 but the problem persists. Please help! Paul [email protected]
  • (2019-12-10, v:2.0.10) Dan Green: Doesn't replace words in mouseover text.
Hi...this is a nice tool. I've been using it on Famzoo to correct the company's incorrect usage of "debit" and "credit". In the accounting world, a "debit" is an increase in assets, and a "credit" is a decrease in assets. Famzoo, however, adopted the slang usage of "debit" as a subtraction and "credit" as an addition. So I use your tool to swap the website's incorrect usage of the terms so it won't confuse my kids. However, the incorrect language lingers in the mouseover text. How do I swap the terms in the mouseover text? It is called with many statements like the following: <div class="aicons"> <a class="aicon aicon-credit " href="javascript:fzCreditAcct(0,219941001,0);" title="Credit this account"><img src="../famzoo2103/trunk/images/iconnull.gif" width="14" height="14"></a> <a class="aicon aicon-debit " href="javascript:fzDebitAcct(0,219941001,0);" title="Debit this account"><img src="../famzoo2103/trunk/images/iconnull.gif" width="14" height="14"></a></div>
  • (2019-11-22, v:2.0.10) BlewTooth: Word Replacer II breaks using certain regular expressions
I can reliably cause the plugin to not replace any found matches using the following sample RegExps: 1.)/[lr]/gi 2a.)/n(?=[aeiou])/gi 2b.)/n(?=(a|e|i|o|u))/gi 2c.)/n(?=a|e|i|o|u)/gi The validity of the RegExps was tested on regexr.com, and the individual and coupled functionality of the RegExps was tested on several websites, such as searches performed on google.com, articles on wikipedia.com, and stackoverflow.com All of RegExps had their replacement type set to RegEx and their letter case set to maintain. RegExp 1 worked by itself and replaced the matches with a single letter. Any variations of RegExp 2 did not work and their matches were supposed to be replaced with two letters. When RegExp 1 was coupled with RegExp 2, neither of them replaced their expected matches, however, there was one exception that was noticed for which RegExp 1 correctly replaced characters in Wikipedia article titles but RegExp 2 did not.

A list on the left side can be saved only by the button 'Apply to selected'. So my situation is: 1) I've created a 3-pages list, 2) decided to look at the first page and click on the paginator 3) I lose 3 pages of pairs. Expected: list saved automatically after each pair addition, so any action (closing of the window too) do not lead to loss of all the list. Observed: Use of paginator and closing of window lead to loss of all list if the button 'Apply to selected' wasn't pressed.
