Identify Advertisements Using Perceptual Techniques
This extension detects Facebook advertisements and Adchoices Advertisements using perceptual techniques like container size, presence of text that says "Sponsored," or presence of an image that is similar to core AdChoices icons. It then covers these ads with containers that mark them as ads.
**Please Note**:
- This extension does not remove ads entirely but covers them with a translucent cover that says "This is an ad" or "Adchoices Identified"
- This extension is only designed to detect advertisements and Facebook and with the AdChoices icon; it does not detect advertisements with different disclosure standards.
This is an academic proof of concept associated with our paper "The Future of Ad Blocking: An Analytical Framework and New Techniques" (<http://randomwalker.info/publications/ad-blocking-framework-techniques.pdf>). You can find the code for this extension at <https://github.com/citp/ad-blocking/> under "perceptual-adblocker"
Version 1.0.1: Update to prevent Facebook's pseudoselector workaround for selecting Facebook ads.
Version 1.0.2: Update to prevent false-positives on embedded Youtube videos.

- (2018-08-02) Jay Beddow: it appears that it stops videos from showing in photos.google.com when i disable this extension I can once again see my own videos stored at google photos.
- (2018-07-19) Paulo Coelho: This is causing some social media pages to return error 400 and some videos on youtube to not play at all.
- (2018-01-13) Jeff Carter: Spotty implementation. When it works, it works pretty well. But it just blocked out a popup frame in the middle of my Amazon return, and the override [x] was outside the frame. I had to disable the extension and restart my return π Echo previous comments about whitelist/blacklist options, or at least a way to "disable on this site" from the Chrome menu
- (2017-12-28) Linux Mint 18.3, Chrome 63 This extension has potential, but didn't work for me. It needs more options and control over what it can and can't see. I'm not sure if this extension is a proof of concept or what, but it seems pretty pointless to just highlight ads when what needs to happen is block them. Either way, I would really like to see this extension develop further, best of luck.
- (2017-11-30) Steve Oglesby: Works great on some sites, but it often marks WordPress plugins as ads in the admin panel. It also blanks out the entire screen when using Buffer, and the "x" is behind the Buffer panel. Update: It just told me the Disqus comments under an article are an ad. UPDATE - I'm going to uninstall this. I wish it had a feature to disable it on specific domains.

- (2017-10-31) The andu: The extension is very good. One thing for the developers to solve: it completeley hides a chat in youtube live streams. You cannot deactivate that. Also, users should be allowed to create a whitelist of sites where extension is not active.
- (2017-09-21) Peter Maydew: It's good in so far as advertisers can't detect its use, but it really needs a whitelist and blacklist feature added. Some elements are highlighted as ads when they aren't (the menu bar on my router's config page for example). Some sponsored ads I see on Facebook are actually from my friends and I'd like the ability to let them through if the technology allows it.
- (2017-08-19) Alex Invar: Works good for now. I just need an turn off on this page button. It marks youtube chat as an ad.
- (2017-08-14) There are a significant amount of false-positives. It'd be fantastic to exclude certain domains so I dont have to click the 'X' on every sigle page of those domains.
- (2017-08-08) Silviu Niculae: The principle is great, but it needs a whitelist feature, otherwise it blocks all kinds of stuff that's not actually and ad.
- (2017-07-31) Works really well for FB, but needs an option to whitelist (or exempt) sites as it thinks my bank's website is a giant ad.
- (2017-07-16) Del Drew: Needs a way to identify things that the user wants displayed. In my case is always identifies the charts on bitfenix e-currency exchange as ads. Closing it is a minor thing really but when the site or user refreshes the page repeatedly it gets old. Oddly it was disabled in Chrome menu and still doing this.
- (2017-07-02) Jax Robertson: Useful for FB but no for other websites. What it really needs is "learning" abilities, so I can say, "don't AD block this page." For example, I use Dark Sky for weather, and it blocks the map with "THIS IS AN AD". No. No it isn't.
- (2017-06-10) Tom Schi: Maybe a nice idea - but after some weeks testing, it always 'highlighted' non-ADs.
Nice addin but unfortunally it recognizes the Fritz!Box web ui as an ad?!
- (2017-05-26) Craig Forbes: Unfortunately this "Ad Highlighter" extension made all of my Kindle books in my Kindle library disappear in Chrome a half second after the page loaded. Amazon Kindle tech support was clueless. Hopefully "grantstoreydev" can remedy this. In the meantime, back to AdBlock.
- (2017-05-24) Farhan Kazi Islam: Used to be really good, but then it started showing "ADCHOICE IDENTIFIED" in many websites which have not got any ads, e.g. official banking website, wish it was a bit less intrusive, it became annoying to say the least.
- (2017-05-11) Works well EXCEPT for web mail. Keeps interpreting browser viewing of email as Ads. Needs a white list or some such!
- (2017-05-09) adminko kharkiv: Looks good if extension havve an option to hide ads, and yep it works only on FB
- (2017-05-06) Nuruddin Koraym: All is great with this, It's so great that i've actually been able use facebook because of it. But, it removes the chat during youtube livestreams. I hope this will be remedied in the next update
- (2017-05-05) Juraj GuniΕ‘: Works perfect, but e.g. with google Hangout communication windows it is doing the same feature as with advertisements. Exception list of URLs can solve this problem.
