Description from extension meta

Removes Google Analytics (UTM) parameters, and various other click tracking tokens, from URL query strings.

Image from store Tracking Token Stripper
Description from store FeedBurner and similar links often include Google Analytics tracking tokens in the URL's query string. These start with the prefix "utm_" (Urchin Tracking Monitor). Facebook and Google also add click tracking identifiers to outbound URLs ("fblid" and "gclid"). They are used by the target site to report back statistics regarding the origin of the inbound link. This extension removes these tokens from the URL before the destination site is visited, resulting in a more private browsing experience with a cleaner URL that's more suitable for copying into an email, instant message, etc.

  • (2023-01-07) Google User: Does nothing. Hasn't been updated in almost a year. Checkout the issues for this extension on Github. Sadly, sophists who practice Trumpism or those with a warped mindset will assume I have something against the extension. There's no evidence this extension works. Get a reputable (free) privacy extension that does what it claims. Uninstalled.

  • (2021-08-12) Sreejith: Thank you for taking the time to create this extension and making it available for free. This is an awesome addon and it works good!
  • (2021-02-17) Fletch B: How do we check if it works? I know that if I click on a Facebook link to a news story, it still seems to have tokens in the URL...
  • (2020-07-27) Mike Mansour: Took a look at the code, seems safe and probably won't be trying to steal any of the data on your website, unless some malicious party attempts to steal/hack/buy this extension see publicly available code at: https://github.com/jparise/chrome-utm-stripper/blob/master/background.js
  • (2020-01-09) Argha Bhattacharya: Superb. It works like charm. Well done developer.
  • (2019-07-05) Brian Zick: It does remove a number of utm_* tokens, but does not remove utm_brand or utm_mailing
  • (2018-11-08) Clemens Ratte-Polle: on Facebook i can still see on Mouse over at Links a ?acontext and ?ref, This means i will click them and they will be called, istn it?? And i see them a short time in the URL-address-field when page loads... So FB gets informed what i click it seems... o_O This is NOT what i want. Your addons should protect me from this, what it not does. Shouldnt the links be cleand IN the page befor clicking?
  • (2017-02-21) How about an option to temporarily disable, per page and/or completely?
  • (2016-11-13) Daniel Altamirano: So far so good, I hate those tokens. Will let you know if I find any bugs
  • (2016-09-07) Artem Russakovskii: It's exactly what I'd been looking for all my life. I hate utm_ tags with a passion. Thank you! v2.0 seems to work, but I'll report back with any issues if I find them in the next few days. If you don't hear from me, it's working great.

  • (2016-05-03) Tomas Breffitt: Doesn't take advantage of the history API so it creates a new state instead of replacing the old one. Also breaks buzzfeed.

  • (2020-10-12, v:2.6) Zachary Pegan: Removing after <?>
I'm noticing most of the sites I visit are adding surveillance triggered by / following a question mark. Here is an example: https://www.wsj.com/articles/global-stock-markets-dow-update-10-12-2020-11602495564?mod=hp_lead_pos1 You only need up to the 116 string to load the page; the rest is surveillance. Could this extension be configured to just strip out everything after a question mark?

  • (2017-10-01, v:2.0) William Feely: Does it work?
I see the tokens when I pull up a scorecard on Classic WOT 3.0, but is the token stripped before the URL is sent to the server?
  • (2016-11-01, v:2.0) Artem Russakovskii: Add referrer parameter that contains utm strings to the removal list

  • (2016-10-21, v:2.0) Yun Huang Yong: Interaction with HTTPS Everywhere
This extension conflicts with https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere as I think both extensions attempt to redirect using the same mechanism. Right now I get an error saying Tracking Token Stripper effectively "won", getting in before HTTPS Everywhere which means I hit the token stripped URL but on http:// instead of https. Ideally tokens should be stripped, then HTTPS Everywhere gets a chance to further redirect to https://. Is there a way to make them play nicely?
  • (2016-06-18, v:1.6) J Gillman: Breaks Buzzfeed
This extension causes Buzzfeed pages to just keep reloading. And apparently Pinterest is 50% Buzzfeed links. :-) Any chance of a fix? Or a "ignore this domain" option?
