  • (2022-04-03) Poul Thomsen: A LIFESAVER! I have used SearchWP 3.0 in Firefox for many years and later in what has become Waterfox Classic. Waterfox Classic is sadly not usable anymore. This plugin does the same, even though it is not as nice as SearchWP. I am sure this is because of Chrome restrictions. Thank you for the plugin and keep up the good work :-)

  • (2021-06-20) Phillip Ford: I've been using the extension Selection Search for years (highlight, right click, context menu has various search options) but this has won me over - it's faster to use, even easier to add custom searches to, and has all sorts of features you can tweak too. The only thing I would add is the option to have the search tab be next to the currently open one - selecting the new tab to be the foreground tab is almost as good, but what I'm asking for would be even handier. Great work!

  • (2020-12-15) Gary Will: Have been using it for years but never left a review. Of all my extensions, there are only three where I would find browsing unbearable without them, and this is one of them. I use it so much that my only problem is narrowing down the number of custom searches so that it doesn't take up more than one row on my screen.
  • (2020-11-26) Roman Hejl: Super, thanks.
  • (2020-11-12) Sonke W: Can recommend especially in conjunction with Vimium. Quality is on par with it as well, so it feels like they should be part of the same suite anyway.
  • (2020-11-02) Y o: Many thanks to this great add-on! It allows me to switch smoothly from Firefox to Chrome while keeping my searching habits.
  • (2020-10-18) Inservio Letum: Love the concept, but would it be possible to add a setting to lock the searchbar in the navigation bar next to the omnibox, like in Firefox?
  • (2020-10-10) Mindea Jeff: Excellent!
  • (2020-09-29) Meni Hillel: Awesome tool. One of a kind. Don't see anything that has all the functionality. There is only few things I'd love to see being added to make it PERFECT: 1) Total hit count of searched words (next to each) 2) Next/Prev buttons with a number showing which occurrence 3) Page bar previewing hit locations. It comes as no surprises, that these are the capabilities native search has... but wouldn't it be nice to have all these in one? Native search does not have individual phrase search and coloring, which this extension has.

  • (2020-02-24) Alise Belcher: Remember when internet users would cringe at the sight of extraneous menu bars in a browser? Well, this is one you actually want. Infinitely customizable (I even made my own icons) and endlessly usable, SearchBar has personalized my internet experience which I haven't experienced since the days of AOL. Yes, I said it. The AOL interface seemed (albeit clunky) seemed individualized. Anyways, you should support this because he donates the money to a malaria foundation.

  • (2019-12-25) Kym Campbell: Amazing. the advanced custom searches that allow you to replace "%s" in desired URLs with your search query is SOO AMAZING for being able to automatically go to specific webpages Before i got my macbook i used AutoHotKeys (AHK) to do essentially the same thing, but then found out that there was no AHK for mac and no programs that were even similar. But then I discovered your chrome extension and made my day!!! saves soooo much time. TYYYY

  • (2019-11-13) Wind Dancer: Jacob, From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your hard work to make this extension. I understand what it takes to get something 'just right'. This extension is simply fantastic. Every-time I try and say more, it comes back to "thank you" and "fantastic". It is so highly customizable that it is a journey every time I use it, As a language learner, it is indispensable. For continued understanding of my primary language, it goes beyond definitions. The 'journey' is because I can start with a word, grow it to an idea and wind up in Wikipedia learning a lot of related information and more, all with a couple of clicks. The speech to text is heaven. So again, Jacob, 'thank you' for 'fantastic'! And thank you for your choice to donate and support 'Against Malaria'.
  • (2019-11-07) Edison Soares de Lima: Today is the best extension for keyword search and highlighting. Congratulations! Your Firefox extension, pleeeeeeeeease !!!!!
  • (2019-11-06) Bebe Robinson: This extension is amazing. It saves so much time. I have it at the top right side, always open if possible and I can search anything in seconds. I set it to open in background tabs so I can do many searches at the same time. I use it on Chrome and Brave browsers and it always works! What a gem. Thank you!
  • (2019-10-26) Yancy Zhao: I appreciate it~~~
  • (2019-10-21) Jennifer F: I love this extension, it works great. I have one suggestion though. To make it optional as to whether to use only one or multiple search engines on the bar at the same time. For instance let's say I have both Google search and Yahoo search on my SearchBar, then I think I should be able to click both Google and Yahoo search and put in my search say it's "where to go square dancing" then both results from both of those engines would both come up at the same time and I think I should be able to choose as many or as little search engines to use simultaneously as I want to. Or I can choose just one search engine if I want. All I suggest is to make that optional.
  • (2019-10-16) Serge Shevchik: Отличное дополнение.
  • (2019-09-19) E G: Genial! Danke!!!
  • (2019-09-04) Ryse Reed: Works out of the box yet highly customizable, haven't found any better solution for hotkeyed custome search. I literally stayed with Chrome just for this extension
  • (2019-08-06) Julian Hopkins: Very handy little tool. You can add your own favourite websites - I use it for a thesaurus, a dictionary, Google Scholar and a couple of others
  • (2019-06-10) John J Starr: perfect way to organize your favorite searches with smart features to boot!
  • (2019-05-05) Gabi Franz: Great tool!!

  • (2019-01-15) Natasha Bass: I've been using it for 6 years, I think... I moved from Windows to Mac and almost forgot that this little tool is a custom Chrome extension. Very helpful (for work), reliable and never caused any troubles. It does it's job so good I may have an addiction to it.
  • (2019-01-10) Omen Frankfurt: It got many options, but I can't embed it into the browser's toolbars. Why? Is this still not possible with web extensions? Why does all Software go the bad router?
  • (2019-01-10) John Paul: useless
  • (2019-01-02) Ciaràn: It only recognises my default search engine. Tried it on both Chromium and Google. My other favourite search engines are ecosia and duckduckgogo. I went into advanced settings. There were icons to add google, youtube and wikipedia. I did. No change. Thus, useless extension. Deleted. A pity - I'll stick with using Firefox and Vivaldi
  • (2018-12-23) Judith Awino: Good chrome extension but i gave it a rating of 4 out of possible 5 because one needs to install it from the chrome web store instead of it being integrated on chrome.
  • (2018-11-18) Standard User: Amazing extension! Just 2 feature suggestions: 1. Option to position SearchBar next to mouse cursor, not only on the screen corners. 2. Add buttons for copying and translating selected text.
  • (2018-11-10) Lively Jim: A great extension that you use often, reducing keyboard typing and the number of mouse clicks. 非常棒的扩展插件,经常使用它,减少了键盘打字的工作和点击鼠标的次数。

  • (2022-03-20, v:0.11.8) Mark Schierloh Jr: Search bar randomly unresponsive
Been dealing with this problem for quite a while now. At different times, seemingly at random the search bar will become unresponsive. None of the buttons will work, and pressing the enter button does not search Google. It is worth mentioning that when the search bar is not working properly if I right-click the text in the box I do get the option to search Google that way. When the search bar is functioning I only get the standard undo cut copy paste delete options. In an effort to try to fix this problem I have disabled all of my other add-ons except for the search bar, I have also went into settings and change the options so that you search for does not automatically display when I open a new tab. This has resulted in not even being able to open the search bar by clicking on the icon when it decides it doesn't want to work. What usually fixes this problem is opening a new tab, after doing that the search for will work for a while before eventually stopping once again. As I write this message the search bar does not work on this page but if I open a new tab and go to this page in the new tab, it will work. Very strange problem, I am on the latest version of Chrome as well

  • (2022-01-31, v:0.11.8) Denis Mattos: Some favicons not working.
Recently, some favicons that had been working for years on my SearchBar stopped working. Usually, when this happens, it's because the website changed its favicon URL. My solution is to use Google's favicon retrieval system to generate a new URL for that website and replace the deprecated URL. However, this time, the favicons that have broken are precisely the ones that use Google's system. At first, I thought Google had changed something on their side, but, after experimenting with a few different websites, it seems Google's system still works fine for some of them (such as Vimeo), but not (several) others (e.g. TinEye, hunter.io, MetroLyrics and eHow). That got me thinking: is it possible Google did change something on their side, but the incompatibility is with SearchBar's code, instead of with the favicon URLs? I'm really grasping, TBH, as I don't know nearly enough about coding to make a more educated guess. But I decided it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks in advance for the attention.

  • (2022-01-21, v:0.11.8) Allan Carhart: Love the Extension. Except for the hotkeys
Hi, I love the extension. I really like the degree of advanced options you've enabled and have configured it pretty extensively. This has been great - it's gotten me much further than anything else has. The issue I have is with hotkeys and key combinations. It seems like there are times when focus is grabbed, either in the location bar or another UI element in the web browser, and the hotkey I define within SearchBar is ignored. I know I can click the buttons but I'm a bit of a keyboard freak. For example, I pull up my chrome history with CTRL-H, add bookmarks with CTRL-D, open a new website with CTRL-L. It would be great if I could jump into the SearchBar input box with a key combination that kind of overrides other keystroke listeners. I know the operating system gets a bit finicky about keystroke listeners, for obvious reasons. But if there is anything you know of that can kind of force focus to move to SearchBar with a keystroke, I'd love to hear it.
  • (2022-01-21, v:0.11.8) nightsmusic doe: Search/Address Bar
Yes, the button, but I can't do that in Opera because it downloads from the Chrome webstore, not the Opera store so it doesn't show up on the list of extensions I can pin to the address bar. Do you have an idea or is it in the Opera store and just not showing up there? I searched a few different ways and couldn't get it to come up as a result.
  • (2022-01-20, v:0.11.8) nightsmusic doe: SearchBar/Address Bar
I've switched from Chrome to Opera. For now, since I have sites I use that don't work on Chrome. I have the SearchBar next to the address bar in Chrome and it sits there all the time and works perfectly. Since Opera is also built on Chromium, I was hoping to do the same, but I can't find a way to do that. It sits within the open tab's window only. Do you know if there's a setting I can change in the background that would put SearchBar back up next to the address bar? I've been using this for so many years, it's second nature to go to it and I don't think I can change now. Thank you.

Hi there, I'd like to make a feature request to have a new option to show SearchBar when I'm browsing a specific page, or when I'm browsing on a specific domain (e.g. *.google.com). Under Options, I have the box checked for "Clear SearchBar when I go to a new page" -- but it doesn't work as I expect. E.g., I click searchbar, enter "101 Dalmations" and select the icon for IMDB; when I click on that new tab for IMDB, it shows me the movie info. But the next time I click on searchbar, even after going to a dozen different pages, "101 Dalmations" still shows in the searchbar entry box. Can you help?

This is the coolest add-in ever. However, I have an issue. There is some weird loading action after around 6 seconds whenever I enter any video page on my on my youtube channel https://studio.youtube.com. If I start playing my videos in preview within that time range it leads to them being stopped. This only happens when the Searchbar is activated. I noticed there is a whitelist function but in this case I would need a blacklist function to prevent the add-in to load for https://studio.youtube.com. Is this possible?

  • (2021-01-24, v:0.11.8) Fabrice E: search detection
First of all, thank you very much for this extension. I can't understand why the convenient mix of search & find is not a default toolbar in every browser. I now use Brave Browser, after trying Opera, Chrome and Vivaldi (and migrating from Firefox/Waterfox), because Brave seems to be the browser where Searchbar works the best for me. [SearchBar/0.11.8 Win32 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 Chrome/88.0.4324.96 Safari/537.36.] The three tiny inconveniences I'd like to report are these: 1. When I search a phrase containing an apostrophe (') by using "paste and go" in the URL bar (and Google being my default search engine), Searchbar doesn't detect that search (it's not populated with the search terms). Perhaps it's because the apostrophe is turned into "%27" (but in Vivaldi the apostrophe remains visible in the URL and the detection doesn't happen either). If I change "%27" to "%2C" (comma), or to "+", the search is detected. 2. When I do a search using Google website, the URL is cluttered with parameters (e.g. : https://www.google.fr/search?safe=active&sxsrf=...&ei=...&q=MY+QUERY&oq=MY+QUERY&gs_lcp=...&sclient=...&ved=... [the "..." being long alphanumeric strings]), and therefore the search is not detected by Searchbar either. 3. When Searchbar is visible, PDFs don't appear in the browser. Is there a way to automatically hide it in that context? The most convenient and easiest (perhaps) solutions to #1 might be to have a "paste and search" option in the right click menu of Searchbar or an automatic "Search when pasteboard/clipboard changes" option? As for problem #2, maybe it could be solved by the use of regular expression jokers ("*") in the "Use these Search URLs with %s in place of query" box, in order to bypass those endless alphanumeric strings and Google parameters? Anyway, thanks again for your helpful and awesome work, Jacob!

The button should follow this pattern: <button type="button" disabled><img src="https://www.google.com/favicon.ico" width="16" height="16" style="filter: grayscale(100%);"></button> Compare to a clickable button with a colorful icon: <button type="button"><img src="https://www.google.com/favicon.ico" width="16" height="16"></button>

  • (2020-08-22, v:0.11.8) אור הושמנד: I think I found a solution for the problem that when SearchBar is shown as a premanent toolbar it might cover the toolbar of the website.
I compared SearchBar to this extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/proper-menubar-for-google/egclcjdpndeoioimlbbbmdhcaopnedkp and I saw that unlike SearchBar, when Proper Menubar is shown as a premanent toolbar it doesn't cover the toolbar of the website, but just lowers it. This is attributable to the code. My conclusion is that the source code of a page with SearchBar should look like that: <html> <head> </head> <body> </body> <iframe class="searchbar9996515125341663" src="about:blank" scrolling="no" style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; display: block; position: fixed; z-index: 2147483646; top: 0px; bottom: auto; left: 0px; right: auto; height: 36px; width: 100%;"></iframe> </html> instead of currently: <html> <head> </head> <body> <iframe class="searchbar9996515125341663" src="about:blank" scrolling="no" style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; display: block; position: fixed; z-index: 2147483646; top: 0px; bottom: auto; left: 0px; right: auto; height: 36px; width: 100%;"></iframe> </body> </html>

When you click on the add-on icon and then the SearchBar bar appears, the text box should be focused (active) immediately in order to be able to enter the search term.

Hi Jacob, thanks for the tool! It's easily the best extension out there. I was about to donate something to you for your efforts (the thing I hardly ever do) then I noticed you waste your donations to some useless "charity" so you defiantly do not need my financial support. See,being a virtue signalling SJW does not always pay (literally) Regards Steve
  • (2020-07-17, v:0.11.7) Lubo Lanator: Typing cursor does not appear within the bar
Hello, I have used your SearchBar for... ages and suddenly there is a problem with the absence of typing cursor after I use my preset hotkey Ctrl-E. The bar appears but I have to click into it for the cursor to appear. I have tried disabling/enabling the extension, rebooting Win7 (and Chrome 84.0.4147.89). It is strange because the behavior appeared suddenly, about 2 hrs ago.

  • (2020-06-04, v:0.11.7) Dan Baboulene: Full Fact Search Bar
Hey Jacob, I've noticed a lot of misinformation on the internet recently, and I was thinking your application could really help people discern the facts from the truth in a quick and easy way! I was wondering if you would consider helping me to create a 'full fact.org' specific search bar that enables people to quickly search the full fact.org website? So you would just install a 'full fact.org' search bar application which immediately becomes a clickable icon? Let me know thoughts would be so great to hear from you, Dan
  • (2020-05-28, v:0.11.7) Edgar Roock: Use + sign instead of %20?
Hi, is there a way to force the concatenation of search strings to come out as https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/search_result.php?q=search+text instead of https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/search_result.php?q=search%20text because the former creates problem when going back in the browser history on this particular site. Thanks
