Disable arbitrary keyboard shortcuts
Lets you set browser keyboard shortcuts containing Ctrl and Alt keys (Ctrl+S, Ctrl+P, Ctrl+Shift+C, etc.) to do nothing. Just head on over to chrome://extensions/shortcuts and assign away! Small, simple, and requires no permissions.

- (2024-04-18) Nick Bailey: Exactly what I was looking for to get rid of the stupid back and forward shortcut keys (which screw you over when typing an email in Gmail for example). Can't get it to disable the useless Ctrl+Tab shortcut as that immediately switches to the next tab.
- (2023-11-06) G Gordon: very nice!!!!!!!!!
- (2023-09-19) Роман Папуша: Just amazing! Extremely simple and elegant solution! Bravo, developers!
- (2023-09-07) mohmad 2: Why not just list the checkboxes disable keyboard shortcuts instead of adding them manually
- (2023-09-06) Philippe Verdy: The only safe way to easily disable the damned shortcut CTRL+W (that closes a tab instantly without any confirmation, this is most often undesired when you were doing a long editing session that cannot be restored, and you pressed CTRL+W instead of CTRL+X for a "cut" operation before pasting. Note that on a French keyboard, the W key is just next to the X key, your finger can slide a bit and the result is just... catastrophic). CTRL+W is not saving time, it's just a costs a lot of work time (you don't need it: close any tab by clicking the "x" box on the top bar of the tab and forget that CTRL+W shortcut). IMHO, Google Chrome, or any other Chromium-based browsers (including MS Edge) should not need to install and run any browser extension to disable this CTRL+W shortcut: this should be natively managed in the user's preferences panel (an IMHO, CTRL+W should be turned off by default to do nothing).
- (2023-08-27) Ahmed hagag: simple and works
- (2023-08-24) William D: Doesn't save the configuration. I define the shortcuts to do nothing, the shortcuts still work. I reload the page, the shortcuts are blank now, as if I had done nothing. I'm on Mac, Chrome Version 116.0.5845.96
- (2023-08-06) Arsen Tahmazian: Nice, works like a charm!
- (2023-07-30) Zachary “Zacarías”: Only works for letters. Useless to me. I don't know a lot about coding but is it really that much harder to include non-letter combos?? SO many people here tried this extension for that specific purpose.
- (2023-07-14) Bruno Bluthgeld: A quick and simple fix for something Google should have fixed long ago instead of meddling with AI. Thanks a lot.
- (2023-07-10) Jonas Handtke: I want to disable CTRL+W and works great! This is the Extension that works :)
- (2023-06-15) Arvid Picciani: thank you. finally no more accidentally closing a remote session
- (2023-06-15) Jonathan Schuman: exactly what i needed. i use citrix in the web browser for work and ctrl n for a new workbook in excel would get taken over by chrome! thanks to this i'm good to go...would be awesome if you can add conditional disabled features i.e. disable in chrome if " www._____.com" is open. THAT would be a dream
- (2023-06-03) Юрій Гец: Thank you. This really helps me get rid of Alt+Home(7).
- (2023-04-25) Preston Hunter: It works you just have to go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts to work the extension.
- (2023-04-19) Alan Shi: Let me keep Ctrl+W but disable Ctrl+Shift+W. Very useful!
- (2023-04-17) Turtle God: functional, but like some others said you need to go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts to use this and there's no documentation so you basically need to come back to the store page every time you want to disable a shortcut.
- (2023-04-16) Stephen G: I don't understand how this extension works? I don't see any option to change the shortcut, when I click on the extension I can only remove or disable it.
- (2023-04-06) Coy (Elijah Muriel): On Edge, it literally doesn't work, it's just fainted and can't be useable. I wanted to get rid of the CTRL + B keyboard shortcut on Edge because it pops up/removes the favorites bar where I set it as "favorites bar only show at new tabs" so it always resets. (And yes, I'm opening an InPrivate or Incognito and misclicks).
- (2023-03-11) Artyom Mezin: Постоянно жал на Command+D вместо сохранения и много чего другого, раздражало. Поставил расширение, указал это сочетание и теперь горя не знаю.
- (2023-03-05) CheesyNoodles: Doesn't work for all shortcuts. I just want to be able to use superscript in google docs with Ctrl + but this extension only works for shortcuts that use letters. Terrible.
- (2023-02-14) dashat: DOESNT WORK FOR CTRL + = I AM LIVID!
- (2023-02-11) AMALGAM: Не работает
- (2023-02-10) Mischiew: Interesting but useless in my case. Not only it disables the shortcut in Chrome but also in any displayed page. So it cannot be used to disable all the shortcuts Chrome is using for itself, making them unavailable for HTML scripts like editors and so on.
- (2023-02-02) Tamas Zsebe: Neat extension, but useless if it doesn't support shift. I'm trying to disable "Shift+Enter", which creates a new window when nobody asked for one.
- (2023-01-21) Kinyoshi Tokuyama: Can't disable "Command + [". Only limited to "Command + alphabet".
- (2023-01-02) capnpppants: Thanks for making this, couldn't find any other way to modify the native default shortcuts. Combine this with the Keyboard Shortcuts extension to change a shortcut to new hotkeys.
- (2022-12-31) Sami Ryan: I need to use keyboard shortcuts often before this extension I was frustrated because sometimes I was hitting the wrong key e.g. Control+Shift+C it opens the Elements panel but I assigned that shortcut to do something else with an external app, after this extension I'm no more frustrated.
- (2022-12-17) nanaman: Ctrl+Shift+Wで誤ってタブをすべて閉じてしまうミスが無くなりました。
- (2022-11-18) ironmokujin: this is what i need, but not a easy way to access setting page. please add a short cut in the plugin icon to chrome://extensions/shortcuts
- (2022-10-20) Ilias Deros: Configure shortcuts here: chrome://extensions/shortcuts It's a shame an extension is required to disable Ctrl+Shift+W, but at least this extension works well!
- (2022-10-17) Carlos Matos (CEPMatos): Simple and sufficient for what I was looking for.
- (2022-10-15) Josh Mattila: This works great. UX isn't easy to access, but just need to go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts in order to turn off specific shortcuts.
- (2022-10-07) the warlord: Fantastic, install, enable and go to: 'chrome://extensions/shortcuts' into the address bar to enter the shortcuts you want ignored - works for ctrl+P, ctrl+N etc. very happy with this, it should be a built in Chrome feature in my opinion. 👍
- (2022-10-05) Soy Bomber: i just want to disable f11 and what ever brings up the console. 2 things that i will never use on purpose, and regularly seem to hit and it gets to the point of aggravating.... this extension does nothing to remedy this problem. also screw chrome for not giving you the ability to do this manually ffs...
- (2022-09-20) Abraham Gable: Installed this and it did what I needed it to immediatly, thank you!!
- (2022-09-17) Paweł: Doesn't work for right alt...
- (2022-09-12) Mykola Manko (Микола Манько): Does not disable Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2. :( UPD: Now disabling works! There is the instruction: https://techswift.org/2020/11/03/how-to-disable-keyboard-shortcuts-in-google-chrome-firefox/ - do steps 2, 3, 4
- (2022-03-02) F S: Works great, thanks
- (2022-02-22) VecD0e: can't get rid of F1..That's a bummer but I can disable other shortcuts like ctrl+D with this so it's great. Many thanks.
- (2022-02-11) BinaryBoyo: Does what it says on the box! 🙂 Just make sure you paste 'chrome://extensions/shortcuts' into the address bar first! And then you can set the shortcuts to disable! 👍
- (2022-01-07) James Holland: The page comes up but I can't type anything into the "Not Set" box.
- (2021-12-13) Bob Smith: I need to disable Alt+[ and Alt+] so that they are seen by my underlying app. I've read that this extension works for some Alt+ and Ctrl+ combinations but not all. Presumably, the two keys I need disabled are in the "not all" category. The name "Disable Keyboard Shortcuts" suggests (to me) a broader usage case than it actually covers. I appreciate that you are at the mercy of the OS, but someplace in the description you could list the actual shortcuts you can disable (e.g., Alt+A to Z and Ctrl+A to Z) so as to be more transparent rather than making the users activate the extension and be frustrated by not being able to disable their desired keystrokes. Also, please make it clear whether or not "disabling" allows the keystroke to be passed on to an underlying app or it is just dead.
- (2021-11-12) karl novachek: Doesn't even work for the MOST COMMONLY hated shortcut - Shift+Enter. SO many times have I hit that on accident while working and it completely interrupts what I am doing by opening a new page. And this shortcut can't even get rid of it. Useless.
- (2021-11-10) Tomáš Hruška: great, but i have to go to settings of browser chrome://extensions/shortcuts :)
- (2021-11-01) XYP BOT: WORKS GREAT EVERY SHORTCUT WORKS ITS REALLY GREAT
- (2021-09-10) Dyana Stephens: This is exactly what I've been looking for, except I can't get it to work with the one shortcut that I really needed it for - Ctrl++ (increases the browser font size). It works fine for shortcuts like Ctrl+V. How can I get it to work with the zoom shortcut? Thanks!
- (2021-08-07) Darren Lue Choy: chrome://extensions/shortcuts to re-assign key-shortcuts This absolutely *needs* to be in added to the the text of the _description_. While 'visible' in the web store screenshot, I had to scan reviews to get this piece of information because the extension _is not_ self documenting; It's completely useless except to those of us who will discover it on their own, or will search for that information. (BTW, dev; Web Store crushes screenshots to a default size of 512x320 or 640x400, but the default "Extensions" width is 680px if you want to re-render it in a more legible size.)
- (2021-07-31) mips parc: この拡張機能で、Ctrl-Jでダウンロード履歴一覧が意図せず開くことがなくなり、これまで通りIMEの切り替えができるように戻りました。ありがとうございます!
