Speed up, slow down, advance and rewind HTML5 audio/video with shortcuts
HTML5 video provides native APIs to accelerate playback of any video, but most implemented players either hide or limit this functionality. This extension fixes that, plus more...
It will help you optimize your video viewing by allowing you to make quick playback speed adjustments, as well as rewind the video to hear the last few second one more time. Once the extension is installed simply navigate to any page that offers HTML5 video, and you'll see a speed indicator in top left corner of the video player.
- Works on any site with HTML5 media: YouTube, Netflix, local files, etc, including audio.
- Fine-grained speed controls and defaults - 0.07x to 16x in configurable increments.
- Fully customizable shortcuts: remap every key, add modifier combos, custom speed toggles.
- Configurable per-site speed rules - set a default playback speed for specific domains.
- Option to persist your last speed across sessions and tabs.
- Reposition the on-video speed indicator anywhere you like.
Hover over the speed indicator to reveal the controls to accelerate, slowdown, or rewind the video (10 seconds + lowers playback speed). Or, even better, use your keyboard:
- S - decrease playback speed.
- D - increase playback speed.
- R - reset playback speed.
- Z - rewind video by 10 seconds.
- X - advance video by 10 seconds.
- V - show/hide controller.
If you prefer other shortcuts, want to change the increment value, or want the player to remember your playback speed in the future, head into the settings page and customize it to your heart's content.

- I just found a permanent fix for the extension that prevents YouTube videos from playing: just go to the extension's view web permissions and block intrusive ads.
- Jonas
- It's crashing the player making the video stop. I tested with all my other extensions and the video plays normally when I turn this one off. Doesn't happen with every video. I'm using Brave.

- used it for years, but about week ago it starts conflicting with YT, some chances that at start video disappears, sadly must disable until it got fixed

- I was using it for years with no problem, but as of 2026.04.10. something ruined the extension. The speed indicator does not appear or hide, the speed or timeskipping features does not work. Does not find the videos on a site like before. I don't know what happened,( if its a chrome issue or the extension) but as of current state, the extension does not work.

- sadly the newest version doesn't save your speed anymore and just randomly switches the speed if you have multiple videoplayers running at different speeds. very frustrating

- This used to be a useful extension that worked, now it changes the speed of videos randomly and I can't even turn it off when I'm not using it because even disabled it still does it's thing incorrectly. Probably malware at this point.

- The latest update is much worse than it was before!!!!!I had to reset some of my shortcuts to make the overlay buttons work correctly. The x button to close the overlay is gone so you have to have a keybind. It used to be that speed is saved on a overall level and not when you press play. (Like you have 2 youtube videos open but want them on diffrent speed). So I had to go in and unpress the Remember playback speed. Please fix that!!!!!!

- Thanks for your efforts for us non-QWERTY keyboard users, it's appreciated <3 Now the only thing missing is to auto-hide the controller on Youtube (when Youtube controls disappear). Thank you

- This used to be great until it started assuming my keyboard layout is QWERTY this week and screwed up all my keybindings. I don't know if this is a Chromium thing or a Video Speed Controller thing, but whoever did it, please don't make assumptions regarding keyboard layouts. That's what the OS is for.

- After the recent update, I can no longer play YouTube videos with this addon enabled. When the addon is on, the video turns white as if it has been removed from the layout. No matter how many times I reload the page, the same thing happens. The only solution was to disable the addon. And this is sad because it was my favourite addon ever.

- Been using this for years and the QOL improvement is unmatched. That being said, there has been a recent update where the icon stays hidden even as I am adjusting the speed, instead of briefly appearing and then disappearing again. This makes it somewhat annoying to get to the speed I want. It would be nice if this behavior was reverted or changed to an option in the settings.

- use to work just fine but for some reason now when you want to speed up the playback by pressing ctrl D. If I just press "D" I get a popup with a video version. select it again and it jumps.20 times the speed, not .10. pressing "S" and speed decreases fine.

- Essential extension! It gives you better speed control than YouTube Premium for free. You can set any speed you want, far exceeding the standard options. 10/10!

- This is really great for when you start getting too excited while watching homework videos and need to slow things down to keep the learning going in a controlled manner. Thanks so much for this. 6/5 stars.

- So happy to find this solution to speeding up HTML5 videos on a windows 11 system with Chrome. Kudos to the developer and hopefully any bugs will be resolved over time.

- I'm a long time user and want to give credit where it is due. After migrating to Linux, I wasn't able to map the same shortcut keys I've used to (localization related). I tried several other similar speed control extensions and those that weren't limited in functionality performed so sluggishly that at the end of the day I was happy to return to the trusted old tool and mapping new keys. Realizing how big differences such a relatively simple plugin can have based on implementation made me really appreciate the developer's effort. If you care about responsiveness and/or are running older hardware, I'd say you should go with this one.

- amazing extention have been using it for a long time now and it makes it really easy to watch lectures in 4x or 5x speeds along with some ad blocker its great for youtube
- Zura
- wow. great extension. for musicians it's so good. with Mark (M) and Jump (J) functions. Preferred speed, restore speed...

- its glitchy and laggy on brave browser , fix it
- Peter Vlonders
- Since an update months ago the current replay speed setting is very often forgotten as I am watching a video. E.g. I will first set the video speed to 1.80, then press the shortcut S a little later to reduce speed slightly, but the speed will then often revert to 0.90, instead of 1.70. So it seems to forget the current speed setting and count from 1 again. This doesn't happen every time but it does happen most of the time, after not touching the setting for a bit. This bug was introduced months ago, it used to work perfectly before.

- sometimes useful, recommend, but overlay everywhere - meh
- Jack Hamilton
- Works pretty well, although when I'm scrolling on YouTube videos will either be .90 or 1.10 speed most of the time instead of 1.00
- Jerry Wang
- Great. It works and I haven't had any issues so far. Let's me watch lecture videos much faster, skipping through the simpler parts
- Sage Perkins
- Used to work well. Now there's a bug where it resets your settings to default, and that needs fixed ASAP.
- Jonas
- Almost perfect. Make it possible to save the last position of the controller please.
- James Litvak
- It's very good but not great. I have set the settings to start all videos at 1.25x and not remember speed, but randomly videos will start at either 1.00x or 0.95x. Also, while the settings has an option to use a regex expression in the blacklist of websites, I have a regex expression for every site other than www.youtube.com - which should block the extension everywhere else, because it was playing songs on YouTube Music too fast and also shows on YouTube TV - and yet it doesn't follow that. The extension works, don't get me wrong. But it has bugs and it also just seems to ignore whatever your settings are sometimes.
