It will help you optimize your video viewing by allowing you to make quick playback speed adjustments, as well as rewind the video to hear the last few second one more time. We don't read at a constant speed, and we talk much slower than we read - there is no reason why we have to listen at a constant speed and at a (very) slow rate.
Once the extension is installed simply navigate to any page that offers HTML5 video, and you'll see a speed indicator in top left corner of the video player. Hover over the indicator to reveal the controls to accelerate, slowdown, or rewind the video (10 seconds + lowers playback speed). Or, even better, use your keyboard:
- S - decrease playback speed.
- D - increase playback speed.
- R - reset playback speed.
- Z - rewind video by 10 seconds.
- X - advance video by 10 seconds.
- V - show/hide controller.
If you prefer other shortcuts, want to change the increment value, or want the player to remember your playback speed in the future, head into the settings page and customize it to your heart's content.

Thanks to the recent reviews recommending removing and reinstalling. It fixed the problems I was having since the update!
Sometimes when you start a video it changes randomly the video speed without being touched... and somethimes you can't even roll it back to 1.00 speed because it changes to numbers that don't match your settings of the + - buttons. You had ONE JOB. ONE SIMPLE JOB. And you just can't do it.
Updated from 2 to 4 stars, because as recent commenters have correctly identified: if you remove the add-on _completely_ and then re-add it to Chrome, it works again as expected. Still 1 star off for not thinking about migrating legacy users (obviously I am not the only one affected by this), or at least communicating that this may be necessary. Kudos to the community though!
IMPORTANT!!! Old users who have been facing problem because its not been working properly as earlier, you need to remove the extension and click "Add to chrome" again. After the new update it isn't working properly for old users but once you reinstall the extension, it works perfectly. This has been pointed out by many others in the reviews.
Some people will think that this extension is broken because of a recent update. Actually, I scrolled down the reviews and read someone's comment that said to remove the extension and add it back again. I tried it, and it seems to be working now. My guess is that the Sep 09, 2025 update broke or corrupted our saved settings, so the fix is to generate a new settings file and then apply new settings to that fresh slate.

Completely broken by update
for me just removing and readding the extension fixed the incorrect default speed problem that started happening with the new version, probably some preferences corruption or something. everything works fine again, been using this for years and years, perfection
New update was pushed recently that has broken pretty much everything within the extension. Will be moving to another extension.
The new update breaks it. So annoying! whenever i try to return to 1x speed it returns to 2x or something. It didnt behave like this before. Please fix.
It was working fine for 2 years but maybe with new update(i dont know) the reset buttons (R) speed is always returning to 1.20x (should be 1.0). When i check the settings i see its coming back to 1.20 even if i change to 1.0. I am having this trouble for couple days .
I think that something is wrong with latest update. While increasing speed (via 'Increase speed' action by 0.1) after re-focusing the video, suddenly the speed seems to be reset, or rather decreased by 1 unit. I don't press any other button, only 'Increase speed' The same happens with 'Decrease speed' action (I have set it to 0.1). When I click couple of times the shortcut key to decrease the speed, it suddenly drops like by 1 unit or so.

Dangerous extension, avoid!
Extension injects code which sends you to an affiliate site when first visiting many domains. This is ad fraud and also takes money away from actual affiliates, publishers, and content creators. AVOID!
was working perfectly fine, new update has lot off issues, R button not working, you need to click restore default once and save, then make modifications. It worked for me this way
After years (?) of using this, suddenly every video is loading at 1.25x speed despite me not changing anything and seeing nothing in the settings to indicate this should be happening, and restarting the browser did nothing. Something is broken.
The preferred reset speed has been broken recently.
This extension works great! I noticed that it saves the site exceptions ONLY when there are NO TABS OPEN WITH VIDEOS using the extension. I always closed the browser to test, so I’m not sure if that step is actually necessary. Either way, my exception list is now saved, and I’m really happy with the result.

Useful extension! The only thing I don't like is that you have to save after each edit in the settings or it won't apply the changes.
New update messed up a lot of stuff. Scrolling on the video speed no longer changes the speed. Sometimes it randomly goes to 0.07x randomly. And pressing R to reset to last used speed doesn't work anymore!!!!!!!!!
I’m using it very well, but version 0.9.4 often doesn’t load and doesn’t work at all. If it can’t be fixed right away, please roll back the version for now. The occasional bug where it goes back to 0.07 is a bit inconvenient, but version 0.9.4 often can’t be used at all.
worst update ever
Stopped working. After upgrading my OS, the Video Speed Controller has ceased to work. Even before that, it only worked a fraction of the time. I't just not reliable.
To fix the problem where you cant speed up to a certain you add a new key bind and do increase speed and then you set the key bind and max is set it ranging from 1.0 to 16.0 Still stupid that they change the entire ui like nobody asked for it this extensions is getting worse and worse by time coming

Was pretty much a perfect extension before and I've been using it for years with custom keybinds. Unfortunately they updated it and now all settings are gone.. I don't think there's any new functionality either so the update was just to make the settings page marginally more colourful :(
I've been using it for years, It's great. One question: What does "Allow event propagation" do?
Options/keybinds don't save on the options page. Useful extension otherwise. EDIT 3: I think I got it: if there's a tab with a video actively using the extension's settings, focusing that tab (or playing the video? my video autoplayed on tab-focus.) re-saves the old options that had been set when that tab had first loaded. - for Edit 1, such a tab was immediately next to every options tab I opened, and closing the options autofocused the video tab. - for Edit 2, I had added a tab (this Chrome Store tab) between them; so closing the options then reopening them was no longer focusing the video tab... but then when I did go back to the video, the options reset again. I had to close the video tab altogether, open/set/save options, then reopen the video in a completely new tab. That's when my settings worked. ...I hope I didn't open any other video tabs after installing the extension. They would reset my options. A possible best-practice: set your options, save them, and immediately close the entire browser without even closing the options tab. After that, I suspect relaunching the browser will give all tabs the last settings that were saved. EDIT 2: Ignore the notes below. The options end up resetting themselves later; I haven't determined a trigger for that right now. I wonder if it's asynchronous updates or something, but idk what would be the other source. EDIT 1: Options *sometimes* save when you change exactly 1 at a time; reloading the page appears to be unnecessary. At one point, I was able to change a 1st option, save, change a 2nd option, save, close the options altogether, reopen them... and I saw my changes had been persisted.
used to be soo gooodd but it's bad now, I usually use r cap to set to a particular speed but it stopped working now

It was really good before the last update. But it keeps becoming corrupt, forcing me to repair and lose speed settings. The speed settings are also hard to save because they keep reverting back to default.
Works very well, glad it's still being updated.

When will the dev fix the damn 0.07 issue
