• (2021-08-02) Chris Harling: Recent update is malware. Extension used to work great, but after the most recent update it redirects links and feels very much like a virus. Report Abuse!
• (2021-07-30) Jeff Stone: As others have said, do not use this extension. Recently it has been trying to redirect links that I open (even when I typed them into the address bar) into its pop-up window. It's obviously this extension doing it because the pop-up window on the Window's task bar has the extension's icon and name on it just like when you open it normally. The issue went away after removing the extension. It attempts to redirect my link to either an ad or data monitoring because my adblock stops it from proceeding. The sites that show attempting to load are "a-znachrichten.com" and "flowerandgardenideas.com". I noticed it liked to open when I tried to go to links that relate to money in some way or another. Examples include any link that to deal sites, links to investment firms, like vanguard, or links to articles that even talk about money or investments. This is dangerous malware at this point and should be avoided and uninstalled if you already have it. I plan on reporting this extension.
• (2021-07-29) Shane Gibeault: This used to be my favorite, most indispensable, Chrome extension. It enabled me to text my family if needed while working, without having to stop and use my phone. Recently I started getting Pop-ups from "a-znachrichten.com" any time I search for a product online. I scanned my PC with every tool available and nothing was found. It took a week but I finally found out that the Google Messages extension was causing this. Once I removed the extension, those pop ups went away too. If you're getting these pop-ups please disable the extension until Google can fix it.
• (2021-07-27) Matthew Jones: This extension worked great for years but has now been hijacked. Don't install. Uninstall if you have it and report abuse. Read the reviews from Will Padgett and Devin Wright. "...this extension is actually entirely obsolete as you can install Messages as a Chrome App now. Go to https://messages.google.com/web/conversations then click the chrome menu (three vertical dots underneath exit in top right), then click Install Messages."
• (2021-07-26) Brian Brooks: This extension has been causing search engine redirects and popups, with redirects through "a-znachrichten.com" and "flowerandgardenideas.com", especially for financial and banking sites. What's worse, this application seems to be trying to look like it comes from Google. This is highly suspect, and this extension should be treated with significant caution. I am uninstalling it and suggest others do the same.
• (2021-07-25) Ai Mei: DO NOT DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS! I went through hell trying to figure out what was causing a POP-UP that constantly was RE-DIRECTING and cycling through weird websites including a "flowerandgardenideas .com /track_p_us_n.php?" url among others that get redirects. I singled out this extension that is causing it. So, I repeat, DO NOT DOWNLOAD. Contains malware/adware. I've already reported it to google.
• (2021-07-24) Will Padgett: Silly me - I too thought that this was an 'Official Google' ext. I'm usually more careful about extensions that I add, however this one was either effectively deceptive or I had a weak moment... It might not have been the developers intention to be deceptive, but when the Chrome Web Store lists it as "Offered By: Google Messages Launcher" the result is the same. Regardless, the app did as it was supposed to for a time, however it has begun to misbehave (~July 23, 2021). Issue #1 is that clicking on Google search result (we will use a "Home Depot" link for this example) randomly creates a pop-up page that redirects to "a-znachrichten.com", then bounces me somewhere else, then displays a blank grey page with "For Great Offers from HomeDepot.com Please Wait..." in large white letters and then ultimately the pop-up window displays a seemingly random page on HomeDepot.com (when clicking on a link to a Diamond Plate Panel, the "Great Offer" that the pop-up took me to was for a Pie Plate :/ ). Meanwhile, the main window in which I had clicked the ad ended up at the correct HomeDepot page. The pop-up was on top. Issue #2 is basically the same, but scarier: The pop-up occurs when CLOSING A TAB. Everything occurs in the same manner, but since there is no data from a clicked link, it only displays a blank grey page with "Redirecting Please Wait..." in large white letters and then ultimately to a Google Search page. In all cases, the resulting final page is frameless, with no toolbars or anything - just like the Message window is when using this extension. I have not run a Wireshark to determine where this traffic is going, but it all sounds very 'sus' to me! I have verified that the behavior ceases when the Extension is disabled. I have verified that the behavior resumes when the Extension is enabled. I have disabled it for now. I have not tested to see if this behavior occurs on my other Windows devices.
• (2021-07-23) Scotty B: As others have said, this extension was hijacked. Looking at the original authors Github, he no longer owns the extension that is listed here. Someone else has taken over and added malicious search redirect strings to the original code. I highly suggest just installing the Chrome App that others have stated and do NOT use this one.
• (2021-07-13) Stephen Douglas: Google Messages Launcher keeps auto launching when logging into Windows 10. It launches two instances. Then when starting Chrome it auto launches again. Cannot find a setting to stop this. Also, Chrome is configured not to run in the background so the app stops running upon exiting Chrome. Disabled the startup feature in Windows 10 task manager.

• (2021-03-24) Petra Cosgrove: This would be a 5 star app if it just auto-opened as a stand-alone window consistently. If I don't have it in my "home open" tabs it just stays closed, and if I do, it opens as a standard messages.google.com tab. I have to close the tab, and separately open the app to get it to open.. It's... very frustrating. Still the only option we have, and it works fine, it's just less convenient this way.

• (2021-02-01) Matthew Eaton: This is good extension, but the new Microsoft Edge does it better. Microsoft Edge's new web apps do the same thing as this extension. However, the Microsoft web app version allows you to put a shortcut on your taskbar or desktop.

As soon as I tried to make a voice call, I got an error saying the page did not have permissions to use my mic (nor was there an obvious way to give permissions) Using 'messages.google.com' directly works with both texts and calls without any issues. Unfortunately, having that website in a small Chrome window rather than a dedicated extension is not a great user experience.

• (2020-01-17) Matt Wilde: Was using a paid texting tool forever. It started giving me issues sending if my phone was locked. I was told I would have "premium support" I found that google messenges was an option but was so used to having a chrome extension to have it pop out as its own window. Tadaaaaa. Now I am able to use this extension and messenges for free. perfect for what I needed. Especially since its free.

This does exactly what it says it does.... launches Android Messages for Web into its own stripped-down window from an extension button on your browser. Currently, I've got it installed on Microsoft's Chromium based Edge. It appears happy to be there so far.
• (2019-02-27) Chadwick Warfield: There are currently two options for using the Android Messages app on a computer. You can either leave a browser tab open to https://messages.android.com, or you can install one of a few similar Chrome extensions that launch that URL in a dedicated window. You won't get Windows notifications unless you have a tab or window open to that URL. I like this extension because I can launch a standalone window and immediately minimize it. When I get a Windows notification (currently using Windows 7, I'll test Windows 10 later) I can click on the notification and it gives focus to the dedicated window that was sitting minimized in my task bar. This lets me quickly and easily respond to texts! I also like the fact that clicking on the extension button multiple times does not open multiple standalone messenger windows. It just gives focus to the existing window. There is a second extension that is essentially identical called Messages for Web by verostack.io. I don't like that one because clicking the extension button in Chrome opens multiple windows, rather than bringing focus back to the existing one.
• (2019-02-07) O F: I was able to "Pin" the messages webpage on my Chromebook (Neverware CloudReady) using this, and send messages as if it was the Dedicated messages app on a full blown Android OS. No issues - thanks for this!

• (2018-09-19) Curtis Shimamoto: This is as good of an extension as you'll find for the stock Android Messages SMS/MMS app's web interface. Really, all this does (and all any of them do at this time) is launch the web interface of https://messages.android.com in its own window, or sometimes a new tab in some options. This extension removes the tabs, address bar, or any other decorative/convenience things in a normal browser window, resulting in a clean instance that appears almost like a native application. I'd previously used a different option, but came in search of something simpler that didn't try to tack on additional junk on top of what should be a simple implementation. This is what I ended up finding, and it really deserves more than just Oscar's one rating because it is exactly what I was looking for! Until someone makes something to possibly interface directly with the Android Messages API directly, and in some kind of a native application (if there is even and API open for such a thing to be possible), the web interface will be what we are all using in some form or another. This is really just a convenience to slap the site into its own window quickly and consistently. Much recommend!
