A secure chat button for every profile.
Keybase for Chrome is an official Keybase extension for composing ENCRYPTED messages to any Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, HackerNews, or Github user, from the convenience of your browser. It's an easier chat, and it's end-to-end encrypted.
This works even if they have yet to join Keybase. The quick summary:
• Everyone with a social network account has a Keybase inbox, *even before they join Keybase*
• You don't need to know the recipient's email address or phone number or Keybase username—just a social media username is enough
• No one (at Keybase or the social networks) can read your private exchanges
• Look for the "Keybase Chat" button on profiles around the web
• Toggle specific features in the extension options (chrome://extensions/ and click on "options")
At no point in Keybase's protocol does Keybase ever have the keys necessary to read your messages. This is end-to-end encryption, powered by the convenience of public social media usernames.
Keybase is open source, and so is this extension:
You can find the recent changes for the extension in the history of the "browser" directory.

- (2021-01-10) Tigran “TIKSN” Torosyan: Love it, but it would be nice to be able to contact website/domain owner as well
- (2020-04-14) Jonathan Lefebvre: For those with the install bug. First remove the native keybase app from your system. First install the extension then the application. This fixed the issue for me.
- (2020-03-17) Jacob Burrell: Incredible. Password manager?
- (2019-12-18) Maikel Ferrer: No sirve. Me piden de igual manera que instale la app en Windows. No obstante, en la oficina donde estoy no puedo instalarla.
- (2019-12-10) Gregory Allen: Does exactly what it says it does, and does so quickly and without errors.

- (2019-11-02) Oscar Fröberg: Bug: Button doesn't show on Twitter when logged in. It does show when not logged in, both on Twitter and on HN. Issue: Since the button shows for everyone whether they have a Keybase account or not this whole extension seems a bit pointless? Or is there some cleverness to this that I'm missing? Might as well send a regular PM on any platform in question and ask them if they're on Keybase. This would in fact be more effective, compared to sending Donald Trump a Keybase message and wait forever for him to reply. Edit: Actually now I see that it says "(Not yet on Keybase)" in the dialogue, but only after clicking the button. Wouldn't it make sense to make this clear before showing the button in the first place? Also I'm not 100% sure the option was there before enabling "Query profiles passively while browsing" in the extension settings. Now it's there whether the setting is enabled or disabled. What does the setting actually do?
- (2019-10-15) Yakup Salman: Hello, this is Yakup Salman, I made a membership account on your site to earn Keybase 500 stellar airdop, I downloaded the application from Google Play to my mobile phone, I downloaded your Windows application to my computer, add a PGP key I did from my mobile phone, I connected my mobile phone to the application, Failed to connect your application to my computer, Password and security cannot be created in your application, Your application gives errors for each process. I think this airdrop has country restriction to join, If you don't want to give 500 stellar airdrop in our country, please express it on your website clearly, people in our country should not apply for this airdrop to no avail, because people in my country have the right to know, If you don't want to give 500 stellar airdrop please cancel my keybase account,I'm waiting for your answer, Best regards, Yakup Salman https://keybase.io/yakupsalman
- (2019-09-23) Christer Stuxberg (naxe_): Works as expected on windows
- (2019-09-16) Pejman Gh: one of the best in the worldwide
- (2019-06-30) Archer: Does exactly nothing on Chrome OS. Icon is gray.
- (2019-06-03) Andrés Antonio Riveros: Excellent
- (2019-04-11) Niboon Tan: It does what it sets out to do quite well on Windows, it would be nice to check every profile against the database automatically to visually indicate if the person is on Keybase yet without having to click on the button first. This extension only serves as an add-on feature to your installed desktop Keybase software, but people might get confused if they don't know what it's supposed to do.
- (2019-01-23) Scott Griepentrog: Doesn't seem to work. Just tells me to install the app, which I already did. Chrome on mac.
- (2019-01-23) Damon Carlson: The extension just adds a nice cute ICON to Chrome on Windows but does NOTHING!
- (2019-01-10) Z Flanagan: love the fact i can still send a message to users even though they don't have a keybase account yet. will do wonders in helping spread the word about this great service. thanks guys
- (2018-12-23) Aleks_: this is good idea, im try it
- (2018-06-10) Mingwei Zhang: always greyed out and unresponsive on Windows. Haven't tried on mac.
- (2018-05-17) Simon Phipps: Installed on my Chromebook, installed the Android app too, doesn't work - keeps telling me to install the app.
- (2018-03-19) Jay Colson: Running in chrome on mac ... extension doesn't work. Never see chat buttons on twitter or reddit ...
- (2018-02-17) Jemma Nelson: Awesome extension. Seconding Dave Dugal's idea; it would be great if people already on Keybase with that account had a different-looking button. Maybe a big ol' green checkmark next for people who already use keybase.
- (2018-01-30) Dave Dugal: Clever idea, but it lights up a [Keybase Chat] button on EVERY Twitter and Facebook page, regardless if the person is on Keybase. If there were a checkbox option to only display the button for registered Keybase uses, it might be more useful.
- (2017-12-02) Josè La Placa Amigò (Don Jefe): Love the product and the folks that run it are dedicated to making it as great as it can be.
- (2017-10-13) Tobias Zillmann: Funktioniert sofort. Out-of-the-box!
- (2017-08-29) Elijah Henry: It is not functional on my chromebook. It just tells me that I need to install or download it, which I have.
- (2017-08-11) Bryan Glasel: So I haven't found a way to reinstall on PC and mobile if I have lost access to my registered devices. I have my information and passphrase but everything wants access to a device. Also unable to locate any sort of support for the app/service beyond documentation that doesn't appear to cover my situation and a GitHub page for reporting actual app bugs and issues. No idea what to do and I'm left with an account I can only use at the website which offers less functionality.
- (2017-08-09) Sofia Nabyvanets: cool!
- (2017-07-17) Miroslav Avramov: A very interesting startup. They have a decent Android app, a very nice Linux Client - and of course for Windows and Mac... I like the entire conception of KeyBase.io The last thing of their entire project is the Chrome Extension :)
- (2017-06-07) Will Akin: To top all of this off is there actually a Gir theme?
- (2017-05-30) Will Smith: Please add changelog. Also, please fix to play nice with Grammarly for Chrome. The text window gets all screwed up. And whats up with the right arrow?
- (2017-05-30) Howard Stark: Really great addition to the Keybase app ecosystem. Clean and easy to use.
