Furigana Extension helps you adding furigana(phonetic characters) to kanji.
Features:
Set the notation type of the furigana. (hiragana, katakana, or romaji)
Set the display position of the furigana. (above, to the right, or tooltip)
Adjust the size and change the color of the furigana.
Choose if you would like the furigana to be displayed for every word or only the first appearance of the word.
Choose the level of kanji you would like to add furigana to the texts. (JLPT N5-N1, elementary school grades 1-6)
Create a list of words those do not need furigana.
Change the furigana for a specific word. (select the sentence, right-click then choose 'change setting of furigana')
Create new furigana for unlisted words.
Use a text-to-voice function (select the sentence, right-click then choose 'Speak in Japanese')

- (2022-02-16) GETFUCKED GOOGLE: Appears to function well. However, this is meant to be used on pre-written text. It will add Furigana to news articles and the like. Does not function for adding it to self-created documents online, such as Google Docs.

- (2019-07-25) Danilo Nishimura: This extension will display a hiragana, katakana or romaji close to the kanji. It's quite really helpful for people learning japanese, and kanjis in special. Its easy to configure and easy to use. It can display furigana above the kanji, at the right in parenthesis, or as a tooltip on mouse over. You can select the text size and color, and background color for better reading. For those worried about security, you can block this extension, creating a white list of pages this extension can access, you can allow it to work only when you click the extension button in the interface, or disable at all. By selecting the Kanji, and right-clicking on it, it has a context menu which plays a TTS (text-to-spech) reading of the kanji, and allows a advanced configuration of that kanji, where you can specify a specific substitution for that furigana. The only issue I run into is that it may not work in pages where content gets added as you scroll, which requires a full reload. For me that's a real bummer because nowadays this behaviour is quite common in webpages, and can be really frustrating. If the extension had a way to mark kanjis that had received furigana, and work on new ones that are not marked, would definitely deserve a 5 star rating. Solid 4/5 - Recommended.

- (2018-05-14) Jerry Tu: My initial impression is that it works well. Switching over to this one from IPA furigana since it's more accurate and less prone to just plain buggering up. It would be nice if there was an option for it to display less hiragana than strictly needed (ex お詫び just わ instead of the おわび it writes), but that's a minor gripe overall. The option to exclude kanji based on various learner levels is a nice touch and I imagine it would be useful for those learning Japanese (though I still feel tools like Rikaikun or Yomichan serve better in that regard). Overall, the best furigana inserter I've come across thus far. I'll be using this until I come across a better one, though given that this basically does everything I'm really looking for that would be quite a feat.

This could really use an option to always show furigana on websites.
