What is Word Replacer?
Word Replacer is a simple extension inspired by the popular 'Cloud to Butt'. It does much more than that, allowing you to create entire lists of replacements and customize them to your tastes.
WORD REPLACER HAS RECENTLY UNDERGONE A HUGE UPDATE. And if you didn't like it before, you should give it a second try now. Many annoyances don't exist anymore, and the extension is much more powerful.
What is Word Replacer useful for?
That depends on you. I initially made the extension for myself, but the increasing number of reviews suggesting novel uses for Word Replacer may give you some insight.
Personally, I'd recommend starting with popular replacements such as the XKCD (http://xkcd.com/) ones. They make surfing the web more fun, even more so when you're not expecting them!
How do I use it?
Detailed instructions can be read from the settings page. Please read carefully the user manual and the about page if there is anything that's not intuitive enough. And if it isn't, please tell me so that I can make it better.

- (2025-04-01) Oleksander Dudar: Too bad you can’t switch it on/off for certain domain only. You have to turn either on or off completely each time, really annoying. And I guess we’re not getting any updates after all these years passed, especially now, after it was kicked out the store due to Google’s new incredibly stupid policy
- (2025-03-16) Kingl4d: Google seems to have removed it because it "doesn't follow Google's best practices" or whatever. I want it back. It works well.
- (2025-01-29) The AC: Works as I expected. Unfortunately it interferes with keyboard entry, shifting the cursor haphazardly. Can't have that.
- (2024-12-18) Chromo LLC: instructions are broken. waste of time. please remove
- (2024-12-18) Phillip: Love this extension. Chrome Web Store says it may not be available soon. Hope this doesn't happen.

- (2024-10-22) Hannah Zoldyck: I love this extension so much! It works perfectly and helps me sort through the internet and see less hateful phrases
- (2024-08-29) Jimena Marquez Collazo: LOVE IT! I've been using it for under a year now, the only thing that kinda annoys me is that when I try adding a new replacement I need to zoom out of my screen (ctrl, - )so that I can add more. But I still love it can will continue using it! :) (lowkey wished I could use this on my phone too)
- (2024-08-17) FatheredPuma81: Doesn't work at all. Tested again today: Literally does not work.
- (2024-04-03) Chris Cortese: I've been happily using for months, just to create a few changes to a few things I got tired of hearing about in the news mostly. The one and only problem I've encountered is it causes Trello to crash, both in Chromiun and Firefox, on Arch Linux w/Sway. I just discovered this yesterday in a live meeting. It's a showstopper for me for now.
- (2024-04-03) Soren: Works completely fine for me. I recommend setting it to only work for specific sites (Settings > close the popup > site access > 'on specific sites'). You can add sites by clicking "Add a new page" and the following: *://example.com/* (the *asterisks* are important if you want it to apply to the whole site and not just a specific page) My only complaint is that the user interface is extremely basic and could use some additional features like being able to drag word replacements up and down to change the order of priority, but other than that it does its job well enough.

- (2024-01-05) Charles Magnuson: This extension breaks Jira. Any time you try to click in a text field, the page crashes because of Word Replacer II. Once the extension is disabled, Jira works fine again. Word Replacer II needs a disallowed URLs list so this problem with Jira can be avoided. Until then, this app is remains broken and unusable.

- (2023-05-20) Phillip: It's working okay for me with only one minor annoyance. When you click "Settings" it opens the Extension detail page along with the settings dialog. Says it hasn't been updated since 2019 so probably realistic this will change anytime soon. Overall I'm happy with it. It even hides many emojis and other graphics when nothing else works.

- (2022-10-13) Ollie “catdog” Harrelson: used to work great, but recently it absolutely did nothing to a youtube commenter's name (that had a whole uncensored slur in it that i specifically replaced). sooo the feeling of safety i had using it in the past is kinda gone now. tbf this may be a chrome update thing and if it gets patched i'll change this review.

- (2022-08-18) ろどりゅう: The word replacement feature is great! However, if you tweet on Twitter with this extension enabled, you will have to disable the extension each time you tweet because the cursor returns to the beginning each time you confirm the conversion with the enter key... I would appreciate it if you could improve this point.

- (2022-07-24) Leland C: "It's fast and it works" are the two chief praises. It's also unintuitive, a bit clunky, and some features don't work the way you expect. I wish the author would open source this so the community could contribute to it.
