Description from store What is Word Replacer? Word Replacer is a simple extension inspired by the popular 'Cloud to Butt'. It does much more than that, allowing you to create entire lists of replacements and customize them to your tastes. WORD REPLACER HAS RECENTLY UNDERGONE A HUGE UPDATE. And if you didn't like it before, you should give it a second try now. Many annoyances don't exist anymore, and the extension is much more powerful. What is Word Replacer useful for? That depends on you. I initially made the extension for myself, but the increasing number of reviews suggesting novel uses for Word Replacer may give you some insight. Personally, I'd recommend starting with popular replacements such as the XKCD (http://xkcd.com/) ones. They make surfing the web more fun, even more so when you're not expecting them! How do I use it? Detailed instructions can be read from the settings page. Please read carefully the user manual and the about page if there is anything that's not intuitive enough. And if it isn't, please tell me so that I can make it better.

(2024-01-05) Charles Magnuson: This extension breaks Jira. Any time you try to click in a text field, the page crashes because of Word Replacer II. Once the extension is disabled, Jira works fine again. Word Replacer II needs a disallowed URLs list so this problem with Jira can be avoided. Until then, this app is remains broken and unusable.

(2023-07-29) Delvin H: Can this extension automatically be disabled in google sheets? The other option is to manually add every single site outside of google sheets. This extension breaks google sheets formulas.
(2023-05-20) Phillip: It's working okay for me with only one minor annoyance. When you click "Settings" it opens the Extension detail page along with the settings dialog. Says it hasn't been updated since 2019 so probably realistic this will change anytime soon. Overall I'm happy with it. It even hides many emojis and other graphics when nothing else works.

(2022-10-13) Ollie “catdog” Harrelson: used to work great, but recently it absolutely did nothing to a youtube commenter's name (that had a whole uncensored slur in it that i specifically replaced). sooo the feeling of safety i had using it in the past is kinda gone now. tbf this may be a chrome update thing and if it gets patched i'll change this review.

However, if you tweet on Twitter with this extension enabled, you will have to disable the extension each time you tweet because the cursor returns to the beginning each time you confirm the conversion with the enter key... I would appreciate it if you could improve this point.
(2022-07-24) Leland C: "It's fast and it works" are the two chief praises. It's also unintuitive, a bit clunky, and some features don't work the way you expect. I wish the author would open source this so the community could contribute to it.
(2022-07-15) AdamA: I decided to use this to help with practicing Swedish. It mostly works well, but in situations where the word I'm replacing is just a single letter it will replace that letter in words. Examples: Change I to Jag it replaces the I in Instagram to Jagnstagram. Also does the same if any replaced word is part of another word. Example: Change Me to Mig it replaces the me in came to camig. Is there a way to stop this?

(2021-03-22) Jordan Lund: Doesn't seem to work anymore. You can add words or phrases to replace and you can enable them, but the settings don't save and no replacements are made. It looks like whatever code was exploited to make this work has been patched.

The cursor occasionally jumps back to the beginning of words like "This" and "Why" even when Word Replacer II is not supposed to be replacing words or a site. I've had to disable it completely.

(2020-11-25) Géza Kiss: Perfect! Does exactly what it promises. You can export and import your rules, thus it enables you not just to store them, but also to create many rules e.g. by a script. (You can e.g. transliterate Arabic letters to Latin letters by inserting a Buckwalter transliteration table in the expected format.)

One feature it's currently lacking that would really help would be a way to have certain replacements only happen on certain web domains. A few times I've wanted to replace a word when reading a translated story, but not wanted that word to be translated elsewhere.

(2020-11-12) Lily Wilkerson: This worked solidly for me for months until recently, when it stopped working on almost every website I visited. There hasn't been any updates in months, so it's likely a Chrome issue, so your mileage may vary. But for the months it worked, it was very consistent and the customization options were very nice.
(2020-10-09) T L: I feel bad leaving this review because I have had this extension for a long time now. But sometimes in 2020 it started messing up certain sites. On sites like Facebook I can't type anything because the letters move all over the place. For example if I type "Mary had a little lam, its fleece was white as snow", it would end up "ryhad a little Ma mb it's white as snow! fleecewas" Not sure what is going on but its unusable now.
(2020-09-17) Will Be: Don't know if it changed since people left reviews but The UI is super easy and it works! I wish there was a 'Don't replace if part of a word' button on the simple replacement mode though.
