Displays a real-time word count while writing in Google Docs, as well as milestone markers every 500 words.
Wordcounter shows a real-time word count as you type in any Google Docs document. You can toggle it off and on by clicking on the icon in the top right corner of your browser.
It also adds milestone markers every 500 words. Motivating!

- (2022-02-07) Jordan Aurelia Joy: This looks perfect but i downloaded it and it doesn't seem to be working? i'd love an update or whatever as this is just what im looking for :(
- (2021-06-16) Gemma Broomfield: Says I have 12,000 words in my doc when I've got over 44,000...not sure how it can be so wrong when the correct word count sits hiding in the tools taskbar...
- (2021-04-14) Rubix and Games: This broke my google docs. I cant even type on google docs anymore.
- (2021-02-20) Jamie Selner: Not very functional. Count is completely off. It claims my document is exactly a thousand words shorter than it actually is. Have checked the document in google docs and exported it to a .doc file to check it in Word, and they both say 17,020 where this says its 16,020. What's more, I can't see the actual real time word count bubble on the side. All I see is "s in document". I have to resize my window just to catch a quick view of it. The milestone counts every 500 words are visible, but the real time bubble won't stay on the page. I've even tried multiple views and modes in Google Docs and even tried taking my rulers off and everything, but nothing works. Not very good.
- (2021-01-29) Eleanor Mathers: While it does help give me a general idea of the word range I'm around, it's not accurate. On a blank screen it shows "2 words on document".
- (2021-01-13) Ketan Malwa: Wow what an incredibly useful extension! Helps me everyday in writing my research work. Thanks for building it.
- (2020-12-18) Violet: Completely inaccurate word count. When hitting CTRL+SHIFT+C, Google shows that, in my current document, I have 31,624 words. This extension, however, says 12,335 words. The counter is missing over half of the words!
- (2020-09-30) ZET: I like how simple it is but I hated how inaccurate the word counter is. I am removing this extension. Why even bother having a word counter when it is not counting properly? Unless this extension become more accurate and actually counts the word, I will not be using this.
- (2020-07-30) Ren Lovell: It worked, just took a while too load in, using windows 10 and had to scroll thorugh the doc page by page for it to get a near-accurate word count, could do with a bit of optimisation to load faster. (Running on a windows 10 laptop that's mid range in specs)
- (2020-04-16) Kreamy: This app DIDN'T WORK. It showed up but the word count was COMPLETELY WRONG. I have written over 3500 words on over 12 pages but it says there's only 1268 words. I reloaded it a bunch of times to try and give it a chance but the word count just wasn't even close to the right count.
- (2020-02-21) Jack Dunamis: I click on it while I am on a Google Doc, but nothing shows up... Honestly I am disappointed.
- (2020-01-13) Nathan Ferguson: Feature request: option to display a running word count from the beginning of the doc to wherever I've inserted the cursor.
- (2019-10-27) Cyber Warrior: I have just downloaded it, but unfortunatelly it isnt workin. I don't know what to do =(
- (2019-09-28) CharCharChar: I loved this at first, but it's becoming less accurate. In a 20,000 word document, it can be several thousand words off. And in a 1000 word document it's about 30 words off. It's a nice motivator, but it'd work better if the milestone, the bubble, and what google docs says the word count in agreed with each other.
- (2019-09-12) Ryland Loosley: Added it to chrome, went into docs and couldn't find the count anywhere. Disappointing and doesn't work.
- (2019-09-02) Jennifer Ochs: It doesn't seem to do anything. Perhaps it need updating
- (2019-08-18) Joseph Bon: Simple and effective. I've found it to work well, but the lack of options (Such as ignoring headings and content in tables) makes it a little limiting for my use case (Uni assignments). Still handy to have something to quickly reference that doesn't take up too much screen real estate.
- (2019-08-17) Cherry Shute: it's very helpful, but as others have said there are several problems i've had with 1) word count being incorrect 2) having to scroll through large documents 3) the word count changing as i write (forexample--when a new page is added, the text on the new page isn't added until i scroll ahead to it. very confusing when im editing in the middle of a doc). An additional problem i've had lately is that my milestones and the tracking word count don't even match--even when i scroll through the document, there's about a 1k difference between the word count stated, the word count marked in 500-word increments, and the word count google docs has.
- (2019-08-12) ashton wilson: didn't work...
- (2019-06-18) Huyen P Nguyen: nice and simple. the following improvements would be great: (1) exclude characters in word count. i've found for example that "-" counts as 1 word, (2) position of the word counter to work better with changes in layout. i usually work with other windows opened so have to resize google docs to about half the screen, the word counter disappears if the window is not maximised. additionally, things like the dictionary sidebar pushes the word counter to the left as well.
- (2019-05-18) Terence Lam: Does not work.
- (2019-03-30) Tom Meitner: I really want to like and keep this extension. The design is EXCELLENT and perfect. But the word count is slightly off (not a big deal). The bigger deal is that it chokes on longer documents. When I'm writing a 20,000-word document and load the page, I have to click on each page of the document and let the extension count it. This gets really tiresome after a while, as you could imagine. I love this extension but those two little bugs keep me from using it full-time.
- (2019-03-12) Works really well and also inserts 'milestones' every 500 words which are not intrusive to the editing process at all. Nice
- (2019-03-07) Amaan Rizwan: Simple and easy. Shows word count for Google docs. Saved my time. Kudos to the developer.
- (2019-02-19) Catherine Gilbert: Doesn't work.
- (2019-01-14) Julian Matuszewski: Worked perfectly fine although it counts headers as well which skews the whole word count
- (2018-12-09) yon moun: The design seems nice and simple, but the actual count of words is simply wrong (I'm getting around 2000 words in a document of more than 3500 words).
- (2018-10-01) Bruce Berry: I downloaded this app so I could use Google Docs to write an annotated bibliography. Sadly, it does not work on Google Docs as it says it will so it looks like I will have to use Mac's Pages app.
- (2018-08-02) Lucas Azevedo: Doesn't work
- (2018-08-02) Aditya Rao: Simple. And does what it says very well. Please DO NOT add more features to it and bloat it up :)
