With the use of captions and subtitles it can also mute audio while you sit back and relax to watch your favorite movies and shows from a collection of supported sites. • (2024-02-22) Jacko Nieuwenhuize: We really love this extension, because it gives us more posibilities without all the bad language. It is especially nice that you can edit your own filter so it gives the possibility for all languages in the world. The support from Richard is very good, we needed a custom language/audio filter and he helped us really well. We really love it. Thank you
  • (2024-01-02) Isaiah Farb: 5/22/2022 review was made obsolete because the bug is no longer there. 5/29/2023 edit: Once again, fantastic! It would be GREAT if I could choose APF to be off by default, and then only be on for sites of my choosing. That would be better than running into another important questionnaire, slightly affected by APF, that I can't page-refresh without consequences. 1/2/2024 edit: Still fantastic. I wish it was on Firefox.
  • (2023-11-14) Peter Shields: I'm in the UK so Clearplay and VidAngel don't work effectively (even with a VPN). So this is the next best thing. In fact, in some ways it's even better because it will even filter live captioning on Youtube. Unlike Clearplay & VidAngel it does only filter language rather than visual content. But it does this extremely well and with a lot more versatility (oh, and for free!) Whilst it works fine "off the shelf", it works better if you take the time to fine-tune it to your personal preferences. The ability to filter universally across the whole internet and virtually every video platform is what makes it stand apart, and being able to set particular filters to specific websites makes it especially useful and effective. The developer was extremely helpful in answering queries. Me and my family are now able to enjoy a whole range of content that we'd previously banished for polluting our home and minds with wholly unncecssary profanity & blasphemy. I have been more than happy to reward the developer for this. [One amusing incident that I suspect will only make sense to any Brits: Whilst watching the Channel 4 sitcom "The IT Crowd" the filters we had set-up meant that one of the characters said she was going for "...a gay break" and came back "...stinking of gays"!!!! It took us a moment or two to realise what had happened. See if you can figure out what the original script was!]
  • (2023-10-20) Light Spark: Love this extension! It filters out the stuff and helps me focus on what's important. Keeps my mind at ease.
  • (2023-08-28) Tim Fevens: This works perfectly. I ran into a small issue with a particular website, it wasn't a problem with the extension, so I reached out to the developer and he quickly responded with a simple fix. I appreciate this extension as it allows me and my family to watch shows we wouldn't otherwise.
  • (2023-08-07) duy: very good, but it kinda slow down performance the website after i add 'bad words list'
  • (2023-07-21) anonymous man (YT_GamingWithRaf): So good!
  • (2023-07-21) Matthew Nearents: So cool that this exists. Allows me to watch shows I wouldn't watch normally and that VidAngel can't filter, like Ted Lasso.
  • (2023-07-08) Mashu StarChild: It works ok most of the time but it sometimes doesn't work on YouTube with the live captions. It just removes the word entirely instead of censoring it.
  • (2023-06-24) Đức Phan: LOVE IT
  • (2023-06-18) Bob Beers: Meh, is my first response because what I want to use it for, filtering kindle books in my android kindle fire is nowhere in any FAQ or how to use manual. If there is way to use it with an ebook reader, I would love to know. If there is, I'll but the app, but if not, for me it is a waste of time, money and effort.
  • (2023-06-03) Mark -: Works amazingly on any site. Documentation is super well written making it easy to use!
  • (2023-04-15) Shingac: Wow, the application works great and the developer (Richard) is as great in responding and acting on requests as the app he develops, he quickly responded to and acted on my request to add a Europe specific Streaming service and it works great. Thank you Richard, your impact is truly beyond what you can comprehend and am pretty sure will outlive you :)
  • (2023-04-09) Gregory Dibb: Wow wow wow wow wow. So nice to be able to browse the internet and not completely subject to the violence of others' angrily and ignorantly scattered swear words. There is so much #%$@&%^* out there. Hooray for APF! It works superbly. Thank you!
  • (2023-03-31) E H: I use to really, really love this app. It worked like a charm even on major streaming outlets like paramount plus. However, I recently got a new computer with windows 11 and now it doesn't work at all.
  • (2023-01-20) April Tian: Yo! It actually worked! Now I can't see cusses.
  • (2022-12-15) Pat MySecret: 10/20 This is more than a Profanity Filter if you let it be! You can use it to replace all types of words for filtered summarizations and filtered copy/paste. It can make a sort of easy find/replace that can be copied before page is reloaded. Thank You!! -- Note: extension stores a Chromium Edge cookie. if the cookie is deleted, extension will need to be re-installed to work properly.
  • (2022-11-13) Laurie: It's great you can block out slurs and swear words. You can block out specific emojis too
  • (2022-10-13) Andrea Frame: This extension is great for video but I wish it would work with srt files.
  • (2022-09-27) Jenneth Dyck: This is a tremendous tool, especially to stream movies on platforms not supported by VidAngel or the TVGuardian. APF works on YouTube, Disney+, Amazon Prime/Freevee, HBOmax, and all other major streamers, and I'm able to hook my laptop up to my TV with a HDMI to stream filtered content on a large screen. It's completely customizable by letting you add words to the blacklist, decide on your own substitutions, or whitelist other words, and you can even have several word lists to run filters through for different audiences. The developers keep everything running smoothly and update users when there's an error via GitHub or Discord, then provide temporary patches while they work on a permanent fix. The only drawback to using APF over something like VidAngel is that the filters aren't manually timed to the particular movie and relies entirely on reading closed captions, so there's some window for error if your closed captions aren't synced perfectly to the dialogue. It will also mute the entire line of captioning instead of just muting the offensive word because it's not actually *listening* for the word, but reading it with the entire line. So if you're using APF to watch The Breakfast Club, you may be watching in silence for full scenes. Haha. It also won't filter baked-in captions—like if someone swears in another language and the translation appears at the bottom of the screen in the movie itself, because closed captioning isn't generated for that. Overall this is a game-changer. I tested it on DC's Titans and it worked beautifully. I had no idea how much anxiety had been building in me while watching without a filter. I was so focused on my thumb hovering over the mute button that I was missing whole scenes and plots and not enjoying the show like I should have been. When I used AFP, the experience was a night and day difference.
  • (2022-07-15) Edward Winovich: i finally found out how to work it but i am still tring to censor my videos oon google photos
  • (2022-06-12) Brian Black: I cant figure out what to do with this! it has so many settings without explaining what to do! I couldn't find a tutorial or anything that helped. I found things that explained what they do but it doesn't connect the dots on how to do it. Its like I have to hire a programmer to figure it out! tooooooo complicated!!!!!!!
  • (2022-06-04) Y Y: 日本語ではフィルタリングされませんでした
  • (2022-05-24) Preston: I absolutely love it. I have used it for months and I can't go without it. I always wanted to find something like this and was so pleased when I discovered that this did every single thing I ever asked for. You can even tell it to censor text and audio that isn't included in the wordbanks like saying the Lords name in vain by typing them into the words section of the settings.
  • (2022-05-16) Manslaughter: Absolutely phenomenal. Ever since I started using this, my stress levels over people's stupidity have decreased significantly. No more wasting time on explaining the science of biology, cognition, ethology or the values of non-human animals to people who won't even listen to science. I am online all day long and interact with a ton of articles as well as random people, which unfortunately exposes me people who are willfully ignorant and extremely unethical. I'm not even going to mention the times I devolved into writing entire essays for people who don't give a flying F. I adore the malleability of this add-on. It's simple to use once you figure out what you need to do and it's extremely effective at censoring the words. I assume it goes through the entire code of the website and blocks out the words even if they're not immediately visible, yes? Brilliant. Keep it up, OP.
  • (2022-04-29) David Thompson: been loving this extension but suddenly is not working, tried everything, no joy :(
  • (2022-04-25) Charles: Absolutely love this extension for watching my movies/tv shows on Netflix, DisneyPlus, Prime and so much more! Kudos to the developers and the support team who address inquiries quickly and resolve any bugs. Keep up the excellent work!
  • (2022-04-23) Kelly Grant: Richard was so supportive, knowledgeable, and quick to reply to my email. He went above and beyond to help me. He took time out of his own day to troubleshoot the extension for me and kept in constant communication. He didn't stop helping until I was satisfied. Thank you Richard for helping me and creating an extension where people could watch movies without profanity. Kelly
  • (2022-04-08) Sebastiano Privitera: Very good.
  • (2022-03-30) Yakup M: The filter does a GREAT job removing offensive language. In our culture, profanity is becoming much too acceptable and the ability to watch prime and other streaming services without constantly being offended is greatly appreciated. Using God's name in vain, the F word and other exclamations are totally unnecessary and unfortunately highlights the limited, stunted vocabulary that is common now a days.
  • (2022-03-15) Christian Sorensen: Love this. Also love that Richard is active and supports it. Makes streaming so much more enjoyable
  • (2022-03-13) Jonathan Tran: Tested the audio feature on Disney+, works well!
  • (2022-03-10) Miro Nyholm: omg thank you so much!!!
  • (2022-03-05) Christian Barrington: WORKS ON LITERALLY EVERYTHING!!! This is the best product for filtering! Outs VidAngel and ClearPlay to shame! The audio muting is phenomenal!
  • (2022-02-23) Ashley Paul: This is the most useful extension I've used to date. It filters text profanities on websites and also mutes profanities on streaming videos. This enables me to watch movies and series without being forced to listen to people swearing. I found a streaming site (Amazon Prime Video) where it did not work and the Developer was extremely helpful with resolving it. A huge thank you to Richard Frost for the assistance and support provided and for providing this extremely valuable extension.
  • (2022-01-16) browsing falcon: Amazing Extension. You have to click on mute audio checkbox under the audio tab for it to begin working on youtube. Extension works great. Thanks to the developer.
  • (2021-12-19) Chronicles of Luke: Been waiting on someone to make something like this extension for years. I watched many of my favorite movies growing up edited for tv and was disappointed when I bought the movie and realized it had so much bad language. So glad I stumbled upon this extension. I didn't know something like this existed. Now I can really enjoy my movies. Keep up the great work.
  • (2021-12-07) Projekt Darkside: waste app, waste tons of code if block only loaded text ..... peoples need block own what write lmao
  • (2021-11-29) Julie Gagnon: Works great most of the time, but in YouTube captions if a custom added word is all in upper case the plugin doesn't filter it or mute the audio. Also I can't seem to get it to allow certain swear words; the S-word and F-word seem to always be filtered no matter what. :( Other than that, a great plugin!
  • (2021-11-18) s l: Perfect! I just love this developer. When I asked Richard to add showmax audio support it was done in a matter of a few hours. He really made my day. Please support him in any way you can. Thank you Richard :)
  • (2021-10-26) AoNeko: I added Netflix to the list of sites where the muting requiring the subtitles to be shown failed. I added Netflix to the sites that should be filtered. I think Netflix updated or I was missing something.
  • (2021-10-21) DavidStrongInChrist: Set up can be a bit confusing at first but once you configure everything how you want, it works really well! So many shows on netflix with bad language I can now watch. Thankyou to whoever made this!
  • (2021-10-19) Raimundo Ricketts: This extension was just what we needed. It is THE BEST for Chrome compared to others of its kind. Developer please note: It seems to be having issue muting audio in HBO Max lately. It does continue to censor subtitles flawlessly.
  • (2021-10-04) Deal Finder: I can't get this working. I mean, it edits the subtitles but doesn't mute the bad language on Netflix.
  • (2021-10-01) Savannah Howell: Excellent extension. Well-made, kept up-to-date. This is probably my favorite browser extension I have ever used. The author is responsive if bugs arise. It is so extremely customizable, too.
  • (2021-09-01) Aleksandar K.: Handy tool. Blocked a couple of trendy words by pressing a few buttons.
  • (2021-08-16) Nathan Webb: Works unbelievably well! Even work on tweets
  • (2021-07-31) Ryujinxed: Very helpful for my anxiety triggers for certain words
  • (2021-07-23) Taylor English: It's pretty great extension! Thank you for creating this! One problem I've been having recently is that YouTube takes forever to load when I have this extension enabled. Do you know what I can do to fix that?
  • (2021-07-19) Cam Newell: fantastic

Hello, I am using the latest Chrome v116. I tried blocking "cyber" (Whole method) but words like "cybergunk" still appear (in the Option Test window). To isolate the problem, I cleared all words and blocked only "cyber" (Whole, Partial methods) then examined the config data in Inline Mode. The "matchMethod" is always 0 no matter what default method is selected. Please see and fix this problem. Thank you.

I would like to point out a problem with a certain online provider called “Pureflix” we don’t like blaspheming and well for some reason it no longer blocks out blasphemy on this platform & we are not sure why? Hello, thanks for this plugin! Bug: When watching a video on Vudu, there is a small black square that moves around the screen. It looks like it has something to do with the captions. If I turn captions off, it disappears, but I'd like them on at least when the video is muted. Request: Would it be possible to make DailyWire a compatible domain? Thank you!
  • (2022-07-05, v:2.36.3) NickIzAnewb: One more question!

  • (2022-07-05, v:2.36.3) NickIzAnewb: How effective is the filter?
I have clearplay and was wondering if this filter will overwrite it while watching movies. Would there be an option to turn off audio filtering or would I just have to uninstall clearplay? I really hope I don't have to. Also, will the filter only work on websites or does it have full control of other apps too? I know it's just an extension so it might not, but I was still wondering! Thanks!

My mom keeps getting booted from FB because she uses salty language. It's an issue b/c she really depends on her social network (which is big). Is there a way to configure your wonderful tool so that it evaluates outgoing language in text boxes as well as the language that appears on pages provided by FB's servers?
  • (2022-03-10, v:2.33.2) ツBrayden: play.stan.com.au - removes text, but does not mute audio.
Love the app. When on Stan subtitles are correctly removed. Audio, however, is never removed, no matter what combination of settings we use. Works perfectly on other sites like Disney, Netflix, Youtube.
  • (2022-03-04, v:2.33.1) Christian Barrington: Safari Integration
Safari just opened up their browser extensions and by adding this to their browser extensions would be a huge win for Apple users! Hi, can I use this to filter Netflix through my Apple TV in South Africa?
  • (2022-02-13, v:2.32.1) Maria Stayer: Critical issue: Even the extension default profile does not work
I reinstalled Advanced Profanity Filter (3.23.1) and found that the "Whole" and "Partial" match methods still did not work with the minimal, default profile. In the first place, my large config did not cause the problem, the cause may be that I am using Google Chrome 83.0 and Google Chrome Canary 83.0 which are fairly outdated browsers.
  • (2022-02-01, v:2.30.0) Katie Guidry: Disney Plus
I am watching a movie on Disney Plus through my Chrome browser and casting it to my TV. It is not filtering the subtitles or muting the audio.
  • (2022-02-01, v:2.30.0) Maria Stayer: Add dozens of newlines before and after each word in a config file
I want to examine the config file but I currently cannot. Can you add dozens of newlines before and after each word when exporting config data? This way, I will not have to see objectionable words nearby while I examine a legitimate word to test if a feature is working. Which in turn makes a config file safer to read. Since JSON is a structured text format, I believe it is easy to simply ignore all the redundant newlines when importing config data.
  • (2022-01-31, v:2.30.0) Maria Stayer: "Whole" and "Partial" match methods are broken
I noticed that the version 2.30 could not block a word via the "Whole" method. Even the "Partial" method did not work. This seems to happen when I add a new word to be filtered.

I LOVE your extension; thanks SO MUCH! But I'd like to change some settings (e.g., remove the words totally rather than using *****). How do I do so? I can go to the extension in Chrome, where I see screen shots of settings, but I can't find a link to actually get to settings. And on your website, I see a description of all of the different settings, but still can't find where to go make changes to the settings. Thanks for your help, Carl

Can you help with advanced profanity filter with disney plus? On first play through video it misses filtering but it i rewind and replay it will catch the word and filter correctly. • (2021-07-24, v:2.23.0) Todd Mumford: Help with getting filter to work on Apple TV+
First of all, thank you for developing this extension. My family and I have really appreciated the filtering. A few months ago, we used it to watch all of season 1 of Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ and it worked great. We tried watching it again and now the filter is not working. It is toggled on and CC is enabled and showing all the subtitles, but it is not filtering either the text or the audio any more. The filter works on Amazon Prime just fine, but no longer on Apple TV+. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

The Gomovies site is having troubles of their own, not anything filter related cause that is still working great (thanks again). The movie I was trying to watch was the 1979 Alien - https://123movies.mom/film/alien-xPYgC/watching.html - which did have captions with it. Got the filter to censor the words but could not mute the audio. So just wanted to see if you could maybe help me out with that one, thank you (hope you're well). Regards Ayush Hirachund

Hi Richard, hope you are well. Just wanted to see if you could help add the sites https://123movies.mom/ and https://gomovies-online.me/ to the filter me or if you could help me in making them custom sites in case you're busy. Thank you, the filter has been working great for me for Netflix and such.

I have no suggestions here. I believe I am truly doing great to shield myself against profane words. My past suggestions became your features to improve its ease of use and usability. I also have my own extension to fill the gaps Advanced Profanity Filter is not able to deliver me enough protection. My extension can block all emojis to be safe, alt text and redirect if it is a profane url.

The extension does not catch objectionable text in alt attributes. I browse the Internet with all images off, so I see text in alt attributes often. Partial filtering support for alt attributes is wonderful, I also disable Javascript too so there is no need to watch for attribute changes.
