  • (2021-01-16) Nathan Freestone: I love the extension so much that I wanted to rate it a 5 star review! It blocks out bad words on the screen! You can replace bad words to whatever you want! On this computer, I made bad words replace to "Censored"! You can add or delete bad words on it! The word "blocked" gets filtered out for no reason! I deleted the word "blocked" to be unfiltered because the word blocked is not a bad word! I really love it because children and your family won't see it and repeat it! Richard Frost, how did you come with this Chrome Extension? I really want to know! Thank you!
  • (2020-12-10) 2 S: this program creator is god
  • (2020-11-15) Daka Baka: Best profanity filter I've ever used. The only issues I found is it sometimes fails to recognize profane words, (thats youtube's automatic captions fault), and it adds a good 8 seconds to loading to every page. I'm very patient, so it doesn't bother me, but I can see it bothering other ppl. Eitherway, get this extension. Its great. I can watch Gordon Ramsey on youtube without the profanity.
  • (2020-10-20) Adam Dawood: Such a great extension!!!
  • (2020-10-10) Kevin King: it works great.....sometimes. I watch a lot of Disney+, and for the most part it works. But every now, and then it just misses a few. Besides that it is a GREAT profanity filter, and unless there's a better one out there, ill keep using this one.
  • (2020-10-03) Pque Christopher: Perfect extension. Cloud sync feature is like magic. All the words are blocked everywhere everytime. Perfect. 5/5.
  • (2020-10-03) Sarah Petra Stellington: This is a great extension. Since I have a family that are NOT allowed to be using profanity, I knew I'd need this one day. However, I do have one request for you. The filter didn't complete block out bad language, as I've noticed that it isn't blocking bad language in images as well. I think it would be great if you'd also filter images as well, especially ones that contain profanity. Overall, I do enjoy this. Keep it up! :)
  • (2020-09-19) Julie Gagnon: Works great! I use this, not for curse words (I cuss a lot actually), but for a word aversion to a common word that's overused literally everywhere. I was using a different replacer plugin before, but the new Facebook broke it. This plugin works sooooo much better, thank you so much for creating this!!!
  • (2020-08-06) Megan Richardson: We love this extension. Our kids like a youtuber who says "Oh my G*d" a million times per video, and we are not ok with that intensity of blasphemy. Using youtube auto-generated subtitles we get word-accurate muting, leaving us with an audible "oh my" which almost sounds natural. It is not 100%, (really the fault is probably youtube's subtitles) but the blasphemy level drops by 95% and our kids know we care.
  • (2020-07-25) Potion Expert: Can it filter words in real time? For example while the text changes in a search bar, it would filter the word
  • (2020-07-17) A Smol Piece of Apple Pie: This extension...I don't know what to say about it. It's simply phenomenal! I can censor or replace any word I want, and the timing is actually PERFECT! Unlike other mediocre filters. Of all my extensions, this is the only one I actively use and the only one I was so influenced by as to write a review! Richard and the team, you all have really outdone yourselves, not to mention the fact that you guys actually listen to feedback, which is something that is VERY hard to come by among developers. The only complaint I have is that the audio filter does not seem to work on Amazon Prime Video, but the text filter works fine. Other than that, your amazing extension is definitely something worthy of praise
  • (2020-07-12) User66: This extension works fine on YouTube. I added the extension to my Chrome browser and I accepted most of the defaults, except that I chose asterisks to replace profanity, rather than the default replacement characters. This extension allowed me to watch with our seventeen-year old son a movie that I had purchased through YouTube, the Big Short, which is very educational on finance and economics and which I thought would be helpful for our son, who intends to study economics in college. But that movie, as I had learned through watching some excerpts on YouTube, has a lot of profanity. After I purchased the full movie and previewed it a bit, my son and I hooked up my computer to our large-screen TV via an HDMI cable and we then watched the movie together. In the movie are a couple of very brief flashes of female nudity which I had seen as I previewed parts of it, so when those scenes began I jumped up in front of the screen to block the screen. But for one scene I sat down too soon and my son and I shared a chuckle at my mistake. We cannot protect our kids from everything. For this profanity filter to work subtitles must be turned on. When a sentence containing a profanity is shown the profane word is replaced with asterisks, but the rest of the sentence can be read on the screen. The audio is silenced not only for the profane word but for the entire time that the sentence is displayed on the screen. Therefore innocent words are also silenced, which is annoying, but which is tolerable, since the innocent words can be read in the subtitles. Perhaps I can find an adjustment in the extension's audio settings to allow me to limit the audio silencing to only the profane words. Of course a viewer can often guess which profane words were used by watching the lips of the actors. But that is still far less offensive than hearing those words. Before downloading this filter I had watched a scene or two of the movie in which were spoken many profanities and when I went to bed a short time later that foul language was still running through my brain. It is better to keep that language out of our brains as much as possible. The filter works great. Nonetheless, I learned that I will need to make use of the feature which allows some innocent words to be displayed even when a syllable would be an offensive word if standing alone. I sometimes watch videos about Japan and World War II and I also read Internet articles on that topic. After I installed this filter I was puzzled to see in one article a portion of one general's name replaced by asterisks. I had thought that the article was discussing General Yamamoto and I was surprised to see him referred to as "General Yama****a." But when I turned off the extension and again looked at the article I saw the full name, which is that of a different general. Speakers of Japanese can perhaps guess what was the offending four-letter English word in that Japanese general's name. This extension is a free download, but I later sent in a small donation to the creator, Mr. Frost, and he responded with a thank-you message via e-mail. He suggested that I write a review, which I am more than happy to have now done, since Mr. Frost is providing a very useful service to Internet viewers with his profanity filter.
  • (2020-07-05) John Simpson: Partially useful, but constantly have to reset it - don't know why.
  • (2020-06-28) Ro Sands: This is the best extension! I had been looking for something to stop all the cuss words in my browser and then I found this extension. 'Many' thanks to the developer for this extension. Keep up the good work!
  • (2020-04-16) Matt Kearl: I can't even begin to express my excitement to have this working in Plex. I love that I can mute swear words out of movies and my kids won't have to hear them.
  • (2020-04-08) Andries Joubert: Had trouble at first to get all the settings right but Richard was very helpful! Thx for a great filter Richard God bless! Andries
  • (2020-03-05) Hanno Coetzer: I installed this app to replace coronavirus with "flu" .. reading the news is now a magical experience Thank you Richard
  • (2020-02-01) Edward: This has been great. I'm not the one that enjoys curse words. I've been having fun with the customization list. I'm a fan of the Cosmere universe (A la Brandon Sanderson) have subbed some not so good language with Cosmere curses. It's [storm]ing good fun ;)
  • (2020-01-21) Kevin Taliaferro: Doesn't seem to work on amazon video.
  • (2020-01-07) Owen Grenney: It's a good extension to use, probably the best one out there! The only problem is that it deactivates after a while and I had to reinstall it.
  • (2019-11-23) Muhammad Salaahuddin: I tried every setting but it mutes out the entire sentence instead of just the word. is there any way to fix this?
  • (2019-11-11) Matthew Miner: This is the most powerful profanity I have found. While it works great out of the box, you can customize it to do anything you want and even transfer your settings easily between browsers. It's hard to imagine how it could do a better job.
  • (2019-11-11) Stephen Wicklund: Works okay, however: 1) You cannot have the extension "whitelist only". That is, you can't have the default be disabled, and only enable it on specific sites (such as only on the websites you'd help your kids visit). 2) The audio mute function is based only on currently-visible subtitle text. If the subtitles are even a little delayed from the actual speech (it often is), then you'll hear the start of the word before it's muted. Also: 3) Audio mute only works if you have subtitles displayed. 4) I tried adding a "custom mute selector" that uses the transcript panel on YouTube to mute words before they're reached. My attempt was: { "www.youtube.com": { "className": "ytd-transcript-body-renderer active", "mode": "element", "tagName": "DIV" } } But it doesn't work since the audio-mute's mutation observer only checks for *added* nodes (rather than nodes whose class is changed), so my selector isn't checked against the transcript lines when it needs to be (when they are activated, or the line after the active one). In the meantime, you could try this other extension which is able to mute words even before the subtitle text is reached: https://github.com/RobotCopy/Adieu-Profanity-Filters That alternative extension used to work well, however recently it seems to be unreliable due to changes in YouTube, meaning neither extension works that well atm. Oh well. (I'm a web developer so may build a new extension that works reliably on YouTube, without subtitles visible, but don't have the time atm.)
  • (2019-10-29) rr: By far the best profanity content filter on the internet. Very user friendly and the latest update is a priceless value addition. Kudos for the good karma - your good karma will save you and your family! Amen
  • (2019-10-11) Maria Stayer: Your extension plays a big role in vastly improving the quality of my life. After some time, I can see a safe and positive Internet that I dream of. I love it and thank you very much.
  • (2019-10-10) Khoi Nguyen Tuan: Amazing filter! I work in my school's newspaper and now I don't have to worry about cuss words on BuzzFeed or Wikipedia! This will help censor social media comments from now on, thanks a lot!
  • (2019-07-30) Lily Brown: This is gonna be SO HELPFUL!!!! THANK you SO MUCH for this wonderful extension!
  • (2019-06-15) sara rosario: I do like it, but when I'm watching a youtube video with the audio thing on with captions on, sometimes the captions completely skips the bad word and it is uncensored. Could you fix this? Also when it's user -made captions the audio mutes completely when there's a bad word.
  • (2019-06-14) Dean Overlin: Yo Dawg, I heard you like to read risky stuff at work. Best filter on the market
  • (2019-04-30) GameLover COOL: This is amazing it blocked the Word God on audio and I get pretty offended when people misuse my God`s name like that and now it blocks it when I am watching YouTube it blocks it
  • (2019-04-20) Zaheeda Tshankie: On Netflix, for audio, it bleeps out entire sentences instead of just the word. Disappointing.
  • (2019-04-07) Hugo Ramirez: I would not go online without this extension. If you search for anything online using Google or other search engines you will encounter profanity no matter how "harmless" the search result is however not a day goes by that this extension does not fail at filtering profanity and if it does I contact the developer and he fixes quickly. He also listens to all my feedback requests. The only place I encounter profanity is with images but now I also use an Image Blocker extension I enable on risky sites.
  • (2019-03-21) S. Baird: Simply amazing. I didn't even know extensions could reach this far. The flexible text blocking is awesome, but the new audio function is more than I could've imagined. This is going on every computer I'll ever own, period.
  • (2019-02-26) I love it .. works on youtube. Thanks
  • (2019-02-23) James Collins: This extension is fabulous. I have repurposed it to remove the spam from YouTube comments.
  • (2019-02-06) Timothy Huang: Works great, except for the audio feature. Does it work on youtube?
  • (2019-01-08) Kyouma Takeshi: It's a really amazing extension, and the best part about this extension is the customizability. You could literally censor any word you like and even add substitutions to them. One of the best extensions I've used.
  • (2018-11-29) Jake Bauer: This extension is amazing for filtering websites. It's customizable and blocks almost all profanity that I've found. The only part I didn't like was how it was preset to show the profanity in the popup, but I easily disabled that in Options. Thank you so much for creating this extension for Chrome!
  • (2018-10-14) Vee H.: Not bad. I also paired it up with this extensive list of curse words here https://github.com/RobertJGabriel/Google-profanity-words/blob/master/list.txt
  • (2018-07-20) Christopher Johnson: I love the ability to substitute bad words for whatever words I want. This is a fantastic extension. It works, it is customizable, I'm a fan. (I might suggest a little more ease on the substitution bits, that was hard to figure out.)
  • (2018-07-11) Alissa Canto: I love this extension so much. I love being able to scroll on social media and have words bleeped out. One thing I really enjoyed was being able to take out swear words completely and print out the document swear-free. It was a clean read. I would recommend this extension to a friend - and I've done it, several times. I am so glad this extension exists! It leaves me with a piece of mind!
  • (2018-05-23) TristanK: What the [freak] This is great haha! I feel better when I browse and read articles. Very helpful tool!
  • (2018-05-11) an actual bean: This is amazing. Now I can scroll through youtube and instagram comments without shredding my conscience to bits. THANK YOU!
  • (2018-04-18) Caleb Salyards: Super good, works fast and effectively. Developer is open to feedback and actively keeps the app updated. I highly recommend this extension for everyone.
  • (2018-02-22) MrWhitetailtracker: Works good
  • (2018-02-02) Yan Qiuteng: An excellent extension overall. I like the new option to completely remove bad words instead of just censoring them. However, I think that there is a bug: I want to delete a word from the preset list of words to filter. I've tried doing this by selecting that word from the drop-down menu and clicking the "Remove" button, but this does not work. Can you please fix this?
  • (2018-02-01) McKay Christensen: Phenomenal extension. This does one (seemly) simple task but does it to near perfection. As is, it does a great job of filtering out profanity; with user customization, it really opens up the functionality. I want to give a shout out to Richard. A while back I looked into this extension because it was close to what I was looking for. I made suggestions to Richard for things I was looking for that were lacking in the extension and he has implemented I think just about all of my suggestions. Now it might be that he was planning on doing those things anyhow, but the fact that he actively listens to suggestions and is always looking for ways to make improvements is very impressive and should be commended.
  • (2018-01-30) Kane Staff: In 1.0, this extension went from great to amazing. It's so great! You can choose to exclude just the word specified or the word in other words specifically for each filter you create. You can choose to replace words with other words to make the sentence stay seamless. Literally, this is an amazing extension now. I use it on Chrome on my computer and on Firefox on mobile. The one thing that would make it better is if changing a setting didn't deselect the current filter. That would be fantastic. There's no lack of functionality, though. It works fine! Just a bit tedious :) Great work on 1.0!!!

I have a Chromebit and Chromebox running this extension and it's a life saver... your work is so appreciated. A few weeks ago, Hulu stopped working on both... no matter what settings I select on APF, the captions display (even when told to hide)... it does filter the captions, but does not mute the audio... So... while on Netflix, my settings hide captions until an offensive word, then display the alternate dialogue and mute audio... on Hulu, same settings, show the captions the entire time, then at an offensive word, continue to display the captions, but include the alternate word and does not mute audio. If I can provide more info, let me know... and I so very much appreciate your time.

It is good to add "Unblock this domain for once" to right-click context menu. This option unblocks a website once and does not save any config data permanently. On the other hand, "Toogle filter for domain" may be unsafe and prone to human error if I forget to re-block a site after reading a webpage, there is a chance I will see swear words if I visit that site again in the future.

I mostly use Google hangouts since I haven't asked if I can get discord again yet (which btw is excellently moderated by this extension) and I want to just be safe rather than sorry. I removed these and added these again, this bug still persists. [Match method is below "Default Settings (for new words/phrases)"]

  • (2020-03-28, v:2.6.1) S. Baird: Multiple content lists
First of all: the "hide Youtube subtitles" feature is fantastic! You've done tremendously well with this add-on, thank you! I was wondering what you'd think about having multiple lists to choose from in filtering. I'm thinking back to the "Oh my Lord" problem on audio filtering, where the system can't yet detect the whole phrase to block it out. If I could have one list I put on general videos that blocks "Lord," and another that I use for medieval videos where "Lord" is not blocked, I'd be able to switch between the two easily. Right now I can add and remove it from the block list but that's a bit of a hassle. If it doesn't sound like a good use of time never mind it. Thank you for your awesome work! This to me is as vital as ad block!

Love this extension. Works great with Netflix. Can get it to silence words on Amazon Prime. It shows it's filtering the words just not silencing them (same problem on Chrome and Firefox). The strange thing is that it was working on Prime last week. Don't know what happened. Suggestions?
  • (2020-01-07, v:2.5.1) Scott Martinez: Questions about Audio Filter
Hi Richard! Thank you for this profanity filter you've created. It's often been a big help for at the very minimum for lessening the amount of religious swears and cuss words present I hear in Youtube videos. This audio filter is far from perfect though as it does not always detect and censor those words. Sometimes this is due to the shortcomings of the subtitles while other times it just doesn't notice it in time. Will this audio filter be updated/advanced in the future so that it will not require the subtitles to detect profanity and instead be able to rely more solely on volume, especially for Youtube? Also, when the subtitles are exactly accurate for the videos, and not just automatic, like on Netflix and some Youtube videos, it has a tendency of censoring every word in the sentence of the subtitles, not just exclusively the cuss word. Will there be any update to fix this or is there a solution available already to avoid this? Lastly, do you know of any programs that are capable of censoring profanity for Android phone apps? I cannot seem to find anything currently, aside from VidAngel, which I'm currently not interested in paying for. Thanks for any help you can provide, and thank you once again for this profanity filter!
  • (2019-12-23, v:2.5.1) Maria Stayer: The feature to support two profiles (or more)
My current profile has a large blacklisted database and it slows down my web browsing speed significantly—I am happy with this because the extension always keeps me safe. In rare cases, it is necessary to browse the Internet quickly to complete a task before a due date, so I will need to temporarily disable the extension and face the risk of seeing profanity in the process. I want this extension to support two profiles (or more). I have a heavy profile for my normal Internet browsing, and I need a light profile for my fast Internet browsing, the light profile has some data entries which are enough to protect me from the most common profanity. The extension should let me switch profile quickly and conveniently. Each profile uses its own JSON file, which can be imported or exported separately. This feature can make the extension more useful and flexible.

My current profile has a large blacklisted database and it slows down my web browsing speed significantly. Sometimes I will need to browse the Internet quickly to complete a task faster, but I need to temporarily disable the extension and it exposes me to the risk of seeing profanity. Now that Disney plus has launched, you might want to work on making this compatible with DP. Even the text filter doesn't work.

  • (2019-05-17, v:2.1.3) S. Baird: Audio filtering fails when on different tab
Hello, I've recently started using APF to listen to one tab (interview, lecture) while watching another. I've found that the filtering is quite faulty in this situation. Easily 3/4 of the blocked words will escape silencing. I have it set to "tab" silencing rather than video.

No option to censor an entire paragraph, instead of only one word.
  • (2018-12-07, v:1.2.1) Sarah Austad: Password in Chrome
The password feature no longer seems to be working in Chrome. At first I thought I had just forgotten my password, so I removed the extension, re-installed it and added a password. However it still does not allow me to access the options after entering the correct password. It just stays on the password field. Thanks!
