Video Quality Settings for YouTube™ is a browser extension that sets the preferred quality of YouTube™ videos, and remembers your video quality settings between sessions. Limiting the video frame rate to 30 FPS is also supported.

The video quality is set to 1080p by default when the extension is installed, and the option can be updated from the player settings on YouTube™, or from the extension's options. Reload already opened videos for changes to take effect.

Updated date is misleading, the last update release was May 28, 2024. But, it still works great and deserves higher rating.
It has worked flawlessly for me in keeping it at 720. Very helpful for old computers.
this works really well
Works for a very short period after putting to 1080, but after a video or two they open in 720 instead, check the extension and it's been switched from 1080 to auto, keeps doing that, so simply doesn't work as intended.
Does not work for me
It's OK but kind of redundant in some sites like YouTube. Plus, the fact that a new tab pops up every time you click the extension, it's annoying - instead of a simple small window. I'd be cool if it had key shortcuts though!
This works, you dont need to refresh the page, this works, finally found a extension that does what it says! (also this does not work IF u put lower than 720p60, mostly people will only use this for high quality, just saying maybe someone uses for lower quality for some reason)

Absolutely amazing, youtube has been downgrading my video resolution like crazy lately on purpose. This allows me to just set it one time and have it automatically apply to whatever video I open without having to do anything after the quick initial setup.

in the next update bring it on video control panel and add 360p as shortcut to directly change quality, it will be more helpful

Amazing. It works perfectly.
Very useful extension, but I have an issue, it seems that when the chosen quality doesn't exist, it puts it on the highest quality! I've set it on 480p, but it sets it on 1080p and doesn't allow changing it either.

Dec 2022 it Works! I don't think people just don't know how to use it. The Plugin will be greyed out, but if you click on the 3 dots on the right and go to Option. You can change to what resolution you want.

I needed Youtube stop to switch resolutions automatically and continuously during playback (think about you are far from the computer/tv/tablet and have playback paused continuously because of buffering) and these is the perfect extension to set resolution you like (eve 144p) Thanks

The extension is working, it is stable and robust. It is smart about selecting the maximum available resolution (e.g. if 4K is desired, but only 2K is available, it would select 2K). It works well with existing ad blockers.
