English spelling reform in your browser!

Image from store CutSpel
Description from store English spelling is notoriously inconsistent and archaic. Many of the English words that cause the most problems are those containing redundant letters. Just eliminating redundant letters solves many spelling difficulties without significantly changing the appearance and use of written English. This idea was developed by Christopher Upward and colleagues into Cut Spelling. This simple reform removes redundant letters, along with a small number of letter substitutions, to improve English spelling and speed writing. CUTSPEL CutSpel implements a subset of Cut Spelling to automatically 'cut' the text of any webpage. CutSpel has two modes. Basic Mode Modifies the 1000 most common English word language while avoiding the more disruptive Cut Spelling changes such as eye -> y. Names of people and objects are left unchanged. The text generated by this mode is very easy to read. Advanced Mode Modifies the 4500 most common English words and uses the full Cut Spelling substitution rules. The text produced by the advanced mode requires slightly more effort to read, however most people quickly adjust and are reading at a normal pace after only a few hours.

  • (2020-11-18) Daniel Tillett: A biased review from me since I created it, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. People are welcome to adapt this to any version of spelling reform they like.
  • (2018-06-30) Brett Schneider: Thank-U Cutspel! English finaly looks ryt!
  • (2017-01-04) Mark Petersen: This is a great spelling translator. It is very fast, and very convenient - just click the button and Pow! your page is translated. Thank you for writing it! I prefer the Simplified Spelling system from the 1986 "Rondthaler Dictionary", and have forked the CutSpel repo to use it: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/simplified-spelling/aaacilckajbambkbjbeghcjjobcibnkb

Daniel, Thank you for writing this great translator. I work with python, matlab, fortran, c, etc, but not Java Script. Your app "showed me the way" to make a translator that is simply a button in a web browser. I've forked your repo and made a Simplified Spelling version at: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/simplified-spelling/aaacilckajbambkbjbeghcjjobcibnkb I also made a pull request in github for a little fix. My email is [email protected] if you want to talk further. I am an scientist/mathematician/programmer/ocean modeler by day, and would love to talk further. It looks like I am now a reform spelling hobbyist by night.
