View and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files -- without needing Office installed on your computer.
Once the extension is installed, Office files that you drag into Chrome, open in Gmail, Google Drive, and more, will be opened in Docs, Sheets, and Slides for viewing and editing.
You can save each file back to its original Office format, or convert it to Docs, Sheets, or Slides to unlock more features, like inviting others to edit with you, commenting, chat, and more.
Please note that Office files cannot be edited in the classic version of Drive. The new Google Drive is gradually rolling out to all users via the Settings menu. If you don't see the option to try the new look, check back again shortly. Learn more here: https://support.google.com/drive/?p=new_drive.

- (2025-06-18) Claire HARDING-MORRIS: This extension has worked brilliantly and has been a life saver up until a few days ago. Now, everything has to be duplicated in order to open them. Any idea what happened?
- (2025-06-10) Stuart Allen: Very painful to use. If users start a colaboritive file as an Excel Document, it's very dificult to open the file using Google Sheets instead of the extension, which wouldn't be an issue if the extensions functionality was more robust. I'm unable to share, comment, or view things such as pivot tables or filters. Even notifications about comments I've been tagged in, if I click the link, it utilizes this extension, hiding the comment I need to action on... Only perk is for files that have data that Sheets may reck when converting, it doesn't seem to do the same damage, but other than that, it's very ineffective to me.
- (2025-06-03) Daniel Tayloe: Like many users, I am uninstalling due to lack of features. Why not route the opened file to some unmanaged uploads folder and open the full Sheets app to provide the full experience?
- (2025-05-16) Abram Beezhold: Omg this helps me so much
- (2025-05-12) Lance Champion: Doesnt work with Brave
- (2025-04-28) Russell Castagnaro: Stopped working last week!
- (2025-04-27) Amanda Gourgue: It was a good extension for years, but suddenly, it doesn't work anymore.
- (2025-03-31) Becky Tesch: glad I can open and save my stuff but there are MANY FEATURES MISSING!! I never thought I'd say power point is better, but there is a LOT of stuff I can do in PPT and CANT do in here! super annoying
- (2025-03-28) Guillaume Oger: Good : Usefull for opening office file stored on your PC. Good: You can define by default Chrome as default application to open XLS, DOC, PPT. Bad: Once installed even Gooogle drive files are opened by default in "Office Editing for Docs, sheets& Slides" app from Chrome insteat of using the much better Google app ( Docs, Sheets, Slides, ...) Bad: less functionnality compare to Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides app Message to Google team: improve Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides app that it allows to open files from the PC the same way "Office Editing for Docs, sheets& Slides" app is managing, without having the need to save the file on drive. --> Uninstalling.
- (2025-03-11) Kacper Rucinski: No longer needed. Google Docs now supports editing MS Office formats natively. Uninstalling.
- (2025-02-25) William Huynh: file not supported
- (2025-02-08) Brian Kennedy: Doesn't work. I open an xlsx file with Chrome and all it does is give me a new tab showing the spreadsheet with bad formatting. Didn't open in Google Sheets at all. Doesn't even work in Brave browser - just shows a blank white page. Don't waste your time with this extension.
- (2025-01-09) Henri Vekhnik: I find it quite good, except that it intercepts files you're trying to open in Google Drive (web), instead of letting them open in Google Docs/Sheets/Slides. This means that if you're trying to open files with passwords, or that are too large, etc, for the extension and want to open it with those apps, it keeps getting in the way.
- (2025-01-08) Zac the Dad: Causing a lot of trouble after install this on Vivaldi, the dropoff table only got cut, copy, paste & unfreeze instead of a full list of essential functions! I thought it was my browser's problem! Uninstall it if you don't wanna have compatibility issue between Office & Google Docs!
- (2024-12-03) allen musk: For Google Docs support 1_802_245_6453 to find helpful guides and FAQs. Google Workspace users can access live chat or phone support for personalized assistance.
- (2024-11-18) Saad Mirza: Makes viewing MS Office files in Google Docs much worse!
- (2024-11-11) Gui Carminati: It's a *file viewer* for spreadsheets and other office files. Exactly what I needed. To automatically open files on click, you need to set Chrome as the default for opening these kinds of files. To do that on Windows, the first time you use Right-click on the file>Open with and select Chrome from the list of suggested programs (or browse the file explorer to C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application and select chrome.exe in case it's not suggested). It's not too obvious if you're not familiar with computers, but it's not complicated. The name is a bit misleading, you can't *edit* files, at least not permanently without saving it to Drive. But for me that's not an issue, it's what I was looking for actually. I didn't want to upload a file to Drive just to be able to see it and then have to delete it or have a huge list of temporary files on my Drive. To me this extensions solves that issue + makes it easier to open the files on click. And if I do want to edit and work on a file, I can simply save it to Drive to continue.
- (2024-11-11) Robert Stiff: Worked fine for a while, but currently there's a bug where it shuffles data around so things are displayed in the incorrect cells.
- (2024-11-04) Edgar Cutar Junior: At this point I feel all google suit products are 90% ready, but it always lack something. This extension for example, could be a nice tool, but right now it's just maddening. It doesn't allow edit, it drags everything into my google drive, even if I don't want to. It's completely useless at this point, unless you don't need to edit anything.
- (2024-10-23) Russell Sinclair: Finally working again. This add-in was busted for a very long time and now works correctly. Don't expect it to be too fancy, it's just a file viewer not a fully-functional Office editor. The "Editing" part of the name is misleading.
- (2024-10-15) B0dre: Lightweight extension to view files. Works Great!
- (2024-10-11) Linda Thompson: Infuriating! Files on Chromebook now won't open without being dragged into my Google Drive, and I can't open work Google docs as Google docs - it only opens them in this pathetic hybrid where I can't edit anything and show changes to others.
- (2024-09-21) Cristi Contiu: Very good, lightweight sollution for opening local files (especially for Linux). Of course you can use Google Docs (with a lot more features), but you need to manually upload the file first.
- (2024-09-12) R N: pretty good for basic editing. Can viewing document comments be added? also more features like inserting images are needed.
- (2024-08-07) Озар Тарасов: The only way you can save files is by uploading them to google drive, and when i try to i receive an error message.
- (2024-07-31) Nicolas Happy: Why can't I insert images! All I can Freaking Insert is TEXT!
- (2024-07-31) Dario Bongiovanni: Very bad and limited extension. Do not install it. Google Docs and Sheets can open your MS Office files without any extension and it works much, much better. I don't know why Google keeps promoting this extension.
- (2024-07-17) Linc Spaulding: Without warning, the download button has been removed from office compatibility edits. After uploading an Office doc to Drive, there is now no way to return (download) an Office doc back for Office editing. This is totally unacceptable.
- (2024-06-24) Wojciech Dąbrowski: Does not work. :(
- (2024-06-14) Binghai Ma: The "download" button disappears on the top-right conner in the new version, may I get it back? It helps a lot to me.
- (2024-06-02) Yonathan Ashebir: Needed a stable(where fonts render correctly) lightweight means for viewing files on my linux - PERFECT!
- (2024-05-30) Aaron Rosenberg: love it!
- (2024-05-16) Fernando Zanelli: You need more compatibility features and to be able to work simultaneously with other people. It allows you to share the file, but the modifications are not displayed in real time, which is annoying. If editing and working correctly on Office files is not allowed, users will migrate to Office 365 instead of continuing to sign up for Workspace. Unfortunate, but true...
- (2024-05-11) Mur: Update UI ok
- (2024-04-29) Roberto Ferro: Ottima, quasi del tutto eliminato l'utilizzo dei vari Office, OpenOffce e compagnia bella dal mio mac: i documenti sono ora associati a chrome che li apre in automatico in Google Drive. Finalmente!
- (2024-04-17) Rabnawaz Omer: Excellent Extension I installed this extension and immediatly all office files started working in the browser. I don't know what the issue is with the other people, you have the url, how hard is it to download?
- (2024-04-14) Артём Гурьянов: There is no download button, so it's impossible to download Office files when using this extension.
- (2024-04-08) Clinton Breckenridge: place 1500000 on this index
- (2024-03-23) Claudio Cardinale: Ma perché non buttate questa estensione e integrate le funzioni in Google docs Google fogli e Google presentazioni? Tenere sto schifo è un insulto
- (2024-03-17) Kenneth Rogers: It used to be great at opening and editing Microsoft Office files, but since the Google Workspace apps can now natively access MS Office files, this extension has now become both redundant and obsolete.
- (2024-02-09) Joel Pick: I like the features this app provides it's an great way multi-task between documents and files.
- (2024-01-30) работает
- (2024-01-26) JonTopping: It doesn't play videos in the PowerPoint viewer. How hard is it to just play my slides with the videos in them?
- (2024-01-19) Jess (Spore): Started not opening documents, causing tab hangs, and crashing my chromebook. Chromebook started having lag spikes this afternoon, and this extension was using up 2GB of RAM at peak despite not having anything open. Turns out it's not even needed anymore! Drive can handle docx files without the extension now.
- (2024-01-16) Diego Mo Leal: I preffer use Docs, this extension is not enough
- (2024-01-15) Louis Cognault: Fewer features that the Google Docs web version where you can edit DOCX files like they were Google Docs, with suggestions, viewing live-edits, etc. Uninstalling. Should be discontinued.
- (2023-12-16) דורון טמיר: doesnt support in right to left languages...
- (2023-12-14) Dongyeong Son: Good~~!
- (2023-11-30) Alex V: I actually used this software when it was called Quick Office on Android. As a Chrome extension it does everything I need for quick editing of MS Word documents on my Chromebook or even on my PC when I don't feel like spinning up Word. I hope Google keeps it around for ever !
- (2023-11-29) Leroy Xie: Please support Drag to Fill function in Excel, it is very useful.
