Monitor and test Internet connectivity. Detect and log when Internet doesn't work even with operating LAN (Wi-Fi or Ethernet)

Image from store Internet Connection Monitor
Description from store 📡 Internet Connection Monitor aka ICM for Google Chrome 🎯 ICM IS THE BEST FOR ⭐️ Recording and analyzing outages of Internet connection ⭐️ Verifying ISP/provider issues ⭐️ Verifying some hardware issues 💻 FEATURES ✅ Precise connectivity test with configurable testing interval ✅ Latency measurement ✅ Detect when Internet doesn't work over operating Wi-Fi or Ethernet ✅ Disconnects, availability and downtime stats ✅ Play sound when connection goes online or offline ✅ Events log with CSV export ✅ Realtime connectivity and latency monitoring ✅ Light and dark themes support 🚀 NEW IN ICM v5 ➕ Realtime connectivity and latency monitoring ➕ Main popup opens up faster ➕ A couple of bugs fixed ➕ UI is like it was designed by Jony Ive 👓 FAQ 🌎 https://internetmon.org/#faq Q: Where is the extension icon? A: At some point Google Chrome changed the way extensions are displayed. You need to click on the puzzle icon to the right of the address bar and then pin Internet Connection Monitor Q: What exactly can be monitored? A: The extension monitors the Internet connection and reports 3 statuses: 🟢 Online: LAN (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) connection is stable, Internet connected 🟠 Connection issues: if Chrome itself cannot properly determine whether Internet connection is down while you're connected to LAN (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) - this status will popup. Most likely, your LAN (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) is connected, but there is no Internet connection behind it. In most cases, it is ISP/provider issue 🔴 Offline: LAN (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) is down, no Internet Q: How does the extension test the connectivity? A: The extension uses a combination of Chrome internal API and pinging Google servers via https (port 443). It does not expose any open ports or something else that could compromise user's security Q: What is the testing interval? A: How frequently to ping Google servers to determine the status of Internet connection. The option is configurable: check very 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds Q: Does this extension have access to my browsing history, etc? A: It does NOT. Moreover, it does not require any special access at all (you can notice that other extensions ask you to give them some permissions during the installation process) Q: Can this extension measure Internet speed? A: It cannot. Please, use Speedtest by Ookla 🌎 https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/speedtest-by-ookla/pgjjikdiikihdfpoppgaidccahalehjh?hl=en Q: Will it work if Chrome is closed? A: Not, it will not. You need to have a Chrome window open to track your connection log. It's relatively easy to add Chrome to autostart on Windows, Mac or Linux Q: Will it work if computer is in sleep? A: Yes, it should work, but the mechanism of tracking the disconnects while the computer is in sleep has not been thoroughly tested. Macs, for example, wake up every couple minutes and ICM checks the connection. But do not rely on precise measurement during the computer sleep, keep the computer running. Alternatively, use Realtime monitor feature inside ICM to check what's going on. Access it via main extension popup Q: Can you use it on Microsoft EDGE, Brave or Chromium? A: Yes, you can. It works on all Chromium-based browsers Q: Is there a Firefox extension? A: Currently, only Google Chrome and Microsoft EDGE are supported. There is a feature request 🌎 https://bit.ly/icm-firefox to implement the Firefox version. Vote for it if you want to speed up the development Q: Can you give an advice on how to improve Internet connection overall? A: Read the article about the 3 primary reasons of Internet connection issues 🌎 https://bit.ly/icm-improve-conn ✨ Icons by svgrepo.com 📩 Contact and support: [email protected]

  • (2024-01-25) Steve Schwartz: Update 1/25/2024: Oops: the icon is configurable, my dumb error. I guess the update changed it, however, so I JUST SPOKE TOO SOON. Fixed, and still at 5 stars++ . Sorry for the error...Update 1/24/2024 - the new icon is just plain awful: the nice big green dot was much more discernible, and the new one is almost invisible. Plus, the adoption of the WiFi symbol is misleading/confusing in addition to being hard to spot. Please at least make the old green dot optional. Otherwise, it is still useful, but this tarnishes a gold reputation. Exactly what I was looking for - very much appreciated!

  • (2023-09-27) Gary Roberson: SIMPLE TO READ AND USE. I don't honestly know why someone hasn't thought of this WAY before now. We have Spectrum, and our node for the entire neighbohood went down. It sucked, and the only way I kept my sanity was to look and quickly see if it was down by a simple red X or green checkmark. And I plan on using the detailed statistics log to prove they owe me about a weeks worth of credit!

Having a lot of issues with my connection going up and down yet 99% of the time when I called Xfinity the connection checked out fine. :-/ Now I have solid proof and a nice log to prove I'm not making this issue up. The extra functions are awesome. Thanks so much to the dev!

I have a mesh system and was able to use this to monitor the ethernet connection of each satelite separately to determinine which satelite was loosing connection to the main router. Found it!
  • (2023-02-20) Avi Barel: A very good informative interface, Thanks. Could you elaborate more regarding the algorithm you use to determine "connection-down"? I assume ICMP is used... Do you distinguish between an accidental drop and a real connection lost...?
  • (2023-02-02) D O: This is an awesome and simple tool. I was having problems with my connection dropping constantly and initially I thought it was a problem with my ISP since I recently moved to 5G internet. With this extension I was able to figure out that I had in fact a faulty usb-c port (the one I was using for my ethernet cable. I bought an ethernet to usb adapter instead and have had zero connectivity problems since then. Great work!!

  • (2022-03-20) Inderjit Singh: Wow so simple but helped me figure out why I kept on getting disconnections. Apparently I had 2 connections running to my switch from my modem and giving me disconnections every few mins for the last 8 months. I have a large network so it was impossible to find without knowing when the disconnections stopped if it was a constant disconnect it would be easy but it was intermittent so i would have to disconnect a wire see if anything went down and see if it messed with my signal
  • (2022-03-16) Ivan Fontane: My internet is dropping out in and out sometimes and I've been trying to figure it out. This app does not identify any issues when clearly I lose internet connection. What could that mean? Does that mean it's not my internet and my hardware ?
  • (2022-03-10) Darien Young: Works great so far. Thanks a lot. Very helpful. Lost internet connection several times while writing this short review alone! Haha. The sound indicator is a very helpful feature. Nice UI design as well with good options and not confusing in any way. Well done.
  • (2022-03-09) firmansyah firmansyah: baik lah
  • (2022-02-08) Ashwin P: It works like a charm thank you for making this, If there was an Android version for this that would help a lot, also the Print or Export to PDF option only shows printing option and not exporting, also it would be great if the icon (yellow, red) also got recorded since it's confusing b/w "No internet connection" and "No internet connection. Wi-Fi/Ethernet OK"
  • (2022-01-22) John Berthoty: Just what I needed. I think my connection is dropping out very briefly. Too short for the extension to catch on a PC connected via ethernet, but my PC connected via wireless shows many disconnects. Thanks for this app!
  • (2021-10-15) Arpit Gawande: Very useful and accurate to check internet connection drops
  • (2021-09-19) Babygremlins: the log does not show the connectivity in a continuous timeline so it's no good if you want to use it to prove to your internet provider that access was down. it only logs the lack of connection for like 10 seconds then shows no entries until it gets a successful connection whatever amount of time later. so you have no positive proof to show your internet provider for the downtime gap. so the log is worthless.
  • (2021-09-19) ABC: It works absolutely & very accurate. Keep it up developer. Nice job done.
  • (2021-09-12) Jorge Vicente Lopes da Silva: Great tool!! Very accurate, friendly and useful. The log file is fantastic. Very good job.
  • (2021-08-10) Jim Wachholz: Great extension to help provide information to the ISP so they could fix internet problems. It totaled 71 disconnects over 24 hours yesterday. Today the log shows ~40 disconnects but the summary drop down only shows 6 disconnects in 24 hours. Is something wrong with the summary pulldown? Am I not understanding the summary "Disconnects, 24h" properly? Thanks
  • (2021-07-31) Dave Walwark: Helpful.

  • (2023-11-13, v:4.0.1) katherine west: question on what is being measured on Latency chart on ICM
Thank you for the extension. Still working out how to use it and wasn't able to find a manual or instructions since I am CLUEless on some pc stuff so if there is a basic dummies writeup, please let me know where to get it. Took me awhile forinstance to pull up the extension but it looks clear how to save reports. I wanted to put in my email for some setup or guide on this extension but not sure if this question is posted vice going straight in an email to the publisher so I didn't put my email in. Wish I knew how I was getting the response email or back to the extension website. Will find out. Basically my question is what is the measurement on the left side of the Status Latency Chart? Is it Mbsp? I couldn't snip or copy the image here. I am going to complain really loudly to my ISP and the county that authorized the ISP but need to ensure I understand what I am reading so I don't make a simple mistake. Best, Katherine West

  • (2023-08-17, v:4.0.1) Chris Ludwick: Count high-latency moments
Hi there - great extension! I wanted to suggest that you add a counter for "high latency moments" -- technically internet connection is still active, but latency spikes high (e.g. 500ms) for 1-2 seconds, that manifests as poor connectivity. This shows up in the realtime monitoring but isn't summarized. Thank you!

  • (2023-06-26, v:4.0.1) Brian Greig: Why was internet outage not shown?
I have fiber coming into the house connected to an EERO router. I think we are having issues with the internet dropping while the router continues to function. The tech came out today from the fiber internet provider and disconnected the fiber from my router for a few minutes. Then reconnected. The router stayed up all the time. But no internet outage was shown on the Internet Connection Monitor on my computer. Why would that be?
  • (2023-04-21, v:4.0.1) Tim Adams: Will ICM differentiate when Wi-Fi is up and working but the ISP connection itself is down?
Sometimes outages are at the ISP level and sometimes it's a local Wi-Fi issue. Will ICM monitor that difference: when I'm still communicating to my Wi-Fi AP but the AP's connectivity is down, as opposed to the AP connection itself is nonfunctional?
  • (2023-03-13, v:4.0.1) René Queizán Pérez: Daily connectivity report affected by the previous day.
Usually when a new day starts, if the previous day I had connection problems, the current daily report is affected. For example, today I only had 3 disconnections, no more than 5 minutes, and it reports me a 7% availability in the day, despite having spent 8 hours of stable connection, instead I should notify 95%. I put invented values, but the problem is real.

Just started using this and it's great. I think it would be useful if you could add an option to show another column in the log page called something like "Duration" that would show how long the connection was connected / disconnected for. I'm currently going offline for some reason quite often and it would help if I could see how long I was disconnected for each status change without having to manually do the math. Otherwise, great extension, well done, and thank you.

  • (2021-08-18, v:3.3.0) Thomas Bress: Wifi/Ethernet OK question
What is the difference between "No internet connection" and "No internet connection/Wifi Ethernet OK"? I'm using your extension to track an ongoing outage issue. Do you know if using VPN would interfere with your tracking? Also, I'm using Edge instead of Chrome. When you say Chrome must be open for your app to track correctly, does that mean if I'm using your app as an Edge extension I need an Edge window open, or would I need a Chrome window open as well? Finally, the log says my availability was only 60% over the last 24 hours. That doesn't seem correct to me, does the app still track even when my computer is in sleep mode? Thanks.
  • (2021-08-07, v:3.3.0) Terry Sunday: Availability Algorithm Seems Wrong
I really like the app. My internet is unreliable much of the time, and I plan to use the log from the app as evidence when I contact my provider to complain. However, the "Availability, 24H" number seems to be wrong. Specifically, the longer the time is that I'm connected without problems, the LOWER that number goes. A few days ago it was in the high 90s, which is about right; now, with just a few short interruptions since then, the "Availability, 24H" is 8.84% and decreasing as I watch, despite the fact that I still have connectivity. Either I don't understand what that number means, or it's calculated wrong, since it shows DECREASING availability with INCREASING time connected. Might be worth a check on how it's calculated. Thanks!
  • (2021-07-31, v:3.3.0) Steve J: Troubleshooting
Hi, first of all, thank you for a really great app! I couldn't find another like it! I'm having frequent random simultaneous drop outs on all my devices, wired and unwired, and used this to confirm that to my ISP. My log shows lots of errors, I see both "No internet connection" and "No internet connection. Wi-Fi/Ethernet OK". Each drop out affects everything and lasts approx one minute, multiple times daily. I know that my devices are remaining connected to the router. So I could draw the conclusion my connection is faulty. However, the ISP claim the router log which they access remotely, indicates uninterrupted uptime and normal download speed for several days. How can this be the case? How is your app getting a different (and I would say, more accurate) result than the router / ISP log? I need to be able to challenge their data. BTW I'm in the UK:) Thanks:)
  • (2021-06-25, v:3.3.0) Mike Appell: Show downtime after connectivity resumes
Another small UX idea: instead of just showing 'Online' in the connection log after a period of downtime, it would be handy to also include the length of the downtime, rather than having the user need to eyeball the log entries and calculate it for themselves.
  • (2021-06-24, v:3.3.0) Mike Appell: Option to open extension popover on disconnect
Hey there Dmitriy, really incredibly useful little extension, thanks a ton for creating it 👏 I saw that there's an option to play a sound when the connection goes on- or offline; I was wondering whether you would consider an option to alternately open the extension's popover on connection change. I tend to leave my sounds muted, and so a visual signal like that would be a lot more helpful for me. Thanks!
  • (2021-06-24, v:3.3.0) Zulkiers: another listed this as well: Auto clear results that are X days old or older
^^^ this would be a very useful feature, to prevent lag and save paper when printing also how do you update it when it has updates? is that automatic or not? I saw an old post saying that dark mode was coming for this extension but when I checked it I didn't see any dark mode option, a little help to where that is located?
  • (2021-05-16, v:3.3.0) Paul Kassal: Suggested feature: Configurable to automatically delete log entries older than X days
This extension has been very useful and I've been using it for a long time now. I've noticed that when the connection log gets very log, it becomes very laggy to view the log or even to pull up the statistics. If I clear the log, things are snappy again. Usually I only care about recent history, so if I could set it to automatically get rid of the older entries that would keep it working smoothly.
  • (2021-05-13, v:3.3.0) Tom Heruska: Constant Disconnects - Ideas?
Hey there. I love your internet connection monitor. We've been having dropoffs from our ISP and I needed a way to log when it happened. Now I'm seeing something unusual. My desktop is disconnecting every few minutes now as shown in the log below. It's connected via an ethernet LAN port. However, I have a laptop sitting next to the desktop using Wifi. It's running the internet connection monitor and it hasn't shown any disconnects. So one computer is showing lots of disconnects while another computer on the same network is showing zero. Do you have any suggestions for why this could be happening? Could it be an issue with the ethernet adapter? It's driving me crazy so I appreciate any feedback you can provide. On your FAQ page you say that it will not work if Chrome is closed. Well Chrome has an option that is on by default that says "Let Google Chrome run in the background". If this is left on, then your Internet Connection Monitor will continue to work when Chrome is closed.

Hi team, I am an javascript developer and as a requirement of my project, I needs to add internet connection detection . I am using websocket and broker for continuous ping request and check for error and from that error, I can show error that internet is connected or not. But some how my connection with websocket is breaked.. I am in huge trouble. But I see , your algorithm can work perfectly. I know it's not in my language but still if any help you can do in offline detection algorithm then please help me. I would be very thankful to you..

First, thanks you for this... it is exactly what I was looking for to track down an ongoing issue. Now that I can tell if the network drops I see are coming from my Internet connection or VPN (and they are all Internet) the next question is, is there anyway to tell that a drop is coming... like an increase in latency, etc. Even if I had only a few seconds warning, it would help by letting me save or close apps, etc., that are directly affected by the connection dropping. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide... and thanks again for creating this!
