Disable Autoplay for YouTube™ is a lite extension that lets you easily stop/pause YouTube videos from auto-playing.
The toolbar button serves as an ON|OFF switch for this addon (the icon will change color accordingly). The red color shows an active state and the dark grey color shows a disabled state. To work with this addon, please add this addon to your browser and then start browsing YouTube. When the addon is active, videos are stopped automatically from playing when you open one. When videos are stopped, the buffering does not continue. You can change this behavior from the options page and let the videos "pause" instead of "stop". This way, the buffering continues but the video won't play. There is another option on the settings page to play or pause videos when a tab is focused or hidden (unfocused). These two options are not active by default. This addon works for all YouTube videos whether they are embedded or not. However, you can disable this feature from the settings page.
Note 1: when you switch to the miniplayer, the video stops again. So if you want to use the youtube miniplayer feature, please turn off this addon.
Note 2: by default, this addon does not work for youtube shorts and the small video player on the channel page. To enable this feature, please mark option #3 on the settings page.

Didn't work for me.
It blocks autoplay, but you can't get rid of the block if you want to start the video - clicking on the red block does nothing. Ridiculous.
Works great, does what it says. Eventually youtube will break it, because they just can't help themselves from shredding all the useful improvements people make, but for now, I greatly appreciate addons like this that do their job and do it well.

Stops videos from playing automatically after it has loaded
It works for me. I found if you go into settings for the extension and check all the boxes (some are unchecked by default) then it truly halts Youtube vids from playing on page load. Helpful. Mac OS Sequoia.

Works exactly as described 8/4/25. Videos autoplaying when I switched tabs was driving me crazy and this fixed it.
Simply does not work: videos starts playing just when tab opens.
Does not work on shorts and playlists ( I want shorts and playlists to autoplay , others videos dont).
It mostly works, but there's a brief half-second or so when the video plays before it cuts off.
This is a feature that should be innate in YouTube. Thank you for your implementation!
It doesn't work well until you disable this option in the add-on settings: «Stop the video and prevent buffering» (Microsoft Edge)

What "Autoplay" is on YouTube is a feature that automatically plays a video after one ends. This extension, contrary to its title, does not do that.
Had been broken recently by a YouTube update, but seems to work again for me, great extension.

It worked great, but in the last couple of weeks something has happened that prevents me from playing a youtube video if it's been more than 5 seconds since i opened the tab. The solution to this is to update the page when i want to watch, and then click play within 2-5 seconds, really annoying.
There used to be button somewhere, in chrome itself or youtube setting where you could turn on and off autoplay like this. But it's gone now. Couldn't find it. But I did find this extension thankfully! In the past I didn't like it when the next video wouldn't automatically play when I opened it in a new tab so I turned it off. But now I've noticed that youtube starts playing the video before the whole site has loaded, which causes it to stutter constantly in the beginning. And that was getting on my nerves. So this extension is working like a charm, doing exactly what I needed! Thank you.

Just the right extension I was searching for. Wanted to save a YouTube video in tab for next day, but don't want it to play until I wanted to.

Incredible! FINALLY!!!!!! Make sure to use the options of this extension first, and then PRESS the extension till you see it's icon turn red. Then it will work perfectly, it is working 100% as it should as of 7/December/2024.

I thought it didn't work, until I found the settings (extension options) page. After ticking the first four check boxes, it worked perfectly.

THANK YOU! I have a MacBook and while I can use the slider within YouTube to turn off autoplay, this only stops the NEXT video from playing. This extension prevents open tabs with videos from playing when I restart chrome, refresh the tab, etc ... It won't play unless I click on it (just a black screen). Checking the 2nd option removes the black screen and the video will still be paused (but buffering). Also, read the instructions on this extension about preventing other unwanted behavior's that are not turned on by default. I checked "pause the video when youtube is unfocused". What this does is when you are watching a video and then switch to another tab, the video pauses. The cool thing is when you go back to the video tab it is still paused but no black screen this time (regardless if you choose the 2nd option) you can see the paused video. You just click the video and it resumes. You can find the options by right clicking the extension badge in your browser. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

Works exactly how it should be.. Very user-friendly and straight to the point, no fluff and no useless features. Definitely a keeper extension for me 💎 One thing I'm hoping to be fixed in the near future though is when you click a new video while in miniplayer mode, it plays automatically instead of showing a black screen (which it does when you go back to regular viewing mode). But overall, pretty neat extension!
Brilliant, exactly what I wanted! Yes, it does show a black screen, but it plays when you click on it.
It doesn't work in playlists and videos have a black screen.
