A shortcut to open a new tab next to the current one
By default, Chrome will only open a new tab at the very end of the row of tabs, which isn’t always what you want. This is a quick shortcut to open a new tab to the right of the one you’re currently viewing.
You can either use the button to the right of the address bar, or a configurable keyboard shortcut. The default keyboard shortcut is:
• For Windows & Linux: Alt + T
• For macOS: Ctrl + T
There is also a shortcut to open the new tab in the background instead of switching to it straight away:
• For Windows & Linux: Alt + Shift + T
• For macOS: Ctrl + Shift + T
You can change these shortcuts by going to chrome://extensions/shortcuts

- (2023-04-21) John Reynolds: This was about the 8th extension I tried that were supposed to do this, but all of the others scrolled my tab list all the way to the bottom (vertical) when opening a new tab. This was the only one that simply opened the tab and left the scrollbar alone! Kudos to that! To anyone else reading this that wants this functionality on the standard Ctrl+T, while extensions cannot automatically override basic shortcuts, end users can by going to chrome://extensions/shortcuts . That settings page will allow you to change the Alt+T to Ctrl+T and the default new tab opening shortcut will act like it "should".

- (2021-10-18) Danny Pernik: Yes! Finally a new tab extension that allows the keyboard shortcut to open next to current tab, while allowing the tab to remain in last position when the + button is clicked! Most intuitive option I've found. Thank you!
- (2021-08-22) Forever Indépendant: Love it, works as intended. It's a shame that it isn't a built-in feature on Chrome.
- (2021-08-18) A. Calvo: Just perfect. Ctrl+T opens a new tab at the end. Alt+T opens a new tab to the right. I need both, this improves my productivity a lot. It works well with the flag: #scrollable-tabstrip (other similar extension did weird things with tab focus)
- (2021-08-01) Chris Vydas: Doesn't work in kiwi browser after updating to the latest playstore build.
- (2021-07-22) glassy jam: It works like a charm. The only thing that I would wanted to see is the ability to change the backgroud color of the newly opened tab to black or, probably, some other colors.

- (2021-04-18) SkillUp Gaming: Excellent extension – works exactly as intended. For anyone wondering how to change the shortcut for opening new tabs, change the Chrome setting at "chrome://extensions/shortcuts." I changed mine to command + Y and command + shift + Y.

- (2021-03-15) Peter Bacon: Works great!. Pairs well with Tab Position Customizer 2. But why are there 2 shortcut keys you can map? They both seem to do the same exact thing.
- (2021-01-04) Awerkamp Family: Excellent! I use this one on a daily basis.
- (2018-05-20) Robert Orzanna: Brilliant! Finally I can open a new child next to current with a customised shortcut Alt + t. :-)
