New Adjacent Tab
- Extension status: Featured
- Live on Store
Opens a new tab to the right or left of the current one.
New Adjacent Tab allows you to open tabs to the right/left through keyboard shortcuts, the context menu, and the extension's icon. It does not change or override Chrome's default behavior for opening new tabs.
The default keyboard shortcuts are:
- Alt+T to open a new tab to the right of the current one.
- Alt+H to open a new tab to the left of the current one.
All settings are configurable and are automatically synced across your devices if you're signed in to Google Chrome.
Developed exclusively for Chrome. This extension is not guaranteed to work with other Chromium-based browsers like Edge, Brave, Opera, etc... Please don't report issues or down-vote this extension in the Chrome Web Store if you're using a non-Chrome browser.

Doesn't do the 1 thing it is programmed to do. Tabs still open all the way to the right and not next to current tab.
Not enough options on the options page - you can't set which tab to activate when closing a tab.
Useless. Works when opening a new link from the current tab, doesn't work if creating a brand new tab with the "+" button.
this extension "New Adjacent Tab" did not work. FYI, this other extension "New Tab Positioner" works great: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/new-tab-positioner/aggooolbccepijnndlobojgdaeabbcfn
Simple and exactly what I was looking for. Nothing more nothing less.
I've been wanting to have this feature to use a shortcut to create a new tab right next to the current tab in Chrome for so long. This plugin is perfect, and exactly what I've been looking for. It's really satisfying to be able to quickly open a new tab in the right place instead of all the way at the end of all of my multiple tabs, which was useless for me. I highly recommend this plugin. It just works and does what it says. Thank you for this.
Does not at all do what it says. Why you can't just open a new tab next to the current one, why is there any need for context menu or shortcut keys. Just open a new tab adjacent to current one as the title would suggest. 👎
it's working and the experience is amazing
works just fine and unlike other similar extensions it has a few extra options, which some will definitely appreciate, not me though, I didn't need them. But ultimately I had to go with Tab Position Manager because in New Adjacent Tab new tabs opened from the same tab would open to the right of the one already opened, so O, 1, 2, 3, ... I wanted the new tabs to be ALWAYS the first one on the right, so O, 3, 2, 1 because that's how I had it previously and I got used to it and I also think it's better since I always know which is the last one I opened. This should be a toggle in both extensions but it's not in either.
This is essential tool! Convenient, and takes my browsing experience to the next level.
Does not work for external apps, then the link/tab does not open right next to the active tab, it opens at the end of all tabs in the window.
It does work, but as many other Open tab to right extensions, I cannot control behavior when opening multiple tabs via hyperlinks from the same page. In this case, it will queue all the new tabs from left to right (so if you open 3 tabs from the same page via hyperlinks, the 3rd one will be 3 places to the right). It would be nice to have options such as: - always open to the immediate right - queue tabs in order of hyperlinks click, but refresh the queue after some timer (duration parameterable in options) and restart opening new tab to the immediate right after that time
Love it, does the job like expected! crazy that it's hard to fin an extension that does this
Ok..tried it. It's Just for opening a New Tab, not Open Link(s)/Bookmarks in New Tab.
The extension I was using is being retired so I'm trying this one. It is quite good but didn't work for me. In general, it works as expected, but if I open a bookmark from the bookmarks bar in a new tab, it won't work (cmd + click a link on the bookmarks bar). Also note, if you use different profiles, you shhould install this extension in the other profile as well. Other than that, a great extension, thank you!
Adding new tabs with dedicated shortcuts for both left/right adjacent, has become such a routine with this extension.. I wish you can add support to other web browsers soon
Great extension! Feature request: when you right-click a bookmark in the bookmark bar and click "open in new tab", then the bookmark should open adjacent to the current tab. That behavior would be very useful! Thank you!
Been using it everyday for months, I immediately felt the need to add to edge on my new work account on the first day logging in.
Having tabs open to the right is such a useful feature, especially with tab groups becoming more popular in chromium-based browsers. Super useful extension, thank you!
I've tried 3 other such extensions which worked but not well. This extension flat out DOES NOT WORK! It opens tab at end of many other open tabs. Complete FAIL!
Wonderful! Works immediately!
Works for links on a page, but not with links in bookmark manager.
5 stars because it does what it says on the tin. What this is missing for me is getting the same behavior from a clicked hyperlink. A lot of us will be replacing "Open Tabs Next to Current" which had that feature. Maybe it will take two extensions to replace, but I hope not.
perfect so far. just need a option to activate to the left when i close current tab. then it will be manufique.
good good very good
You can override the default behavior of Ctrl+T. Perfect
This extension works very well! I could also reuse the default CTRL-T (or COMMAND-T on MacOS) to open a new tab next to the current one.
Absolutely worthless extension. I wanted a replacement for 'Open Tabs Next to Current'. This isn't it. All it can do is open a new blank tab.
Works great and doesn't require unnecessary permission
This works great!!
This ext. works as expected and you can also define your own shortcut key. 👍
Safe to this very day
Thanks for this. - I thought there was a hotkey available for "open tab to the right" by default, but I guess I remembered wrong. - I use a keypad (with macros programmed through software) to work more efficiently with things like web-browsers, so this is very convenient instead of having to click every time, and opening a tab to the left is a nice bonus.
works as expected
Works as intended
Works perfectly!
This extension works perfectly, and is simple to configure. It's great to be able to customize such a common task.

The only "open tab to the right" extension that doesn't send you to the end of your tabs like the other ones.

Damn, I was looking for this for some time by now. Loving it. Thanks!

Works as advertised. Other extensions will not maintain Chrome's new grouping so a new tab would be ungrouped. I now have Ctrl-T set to add a new tab to the right, and it adds it into the current tab's group, just as I wanted.

It does exactly what I was looking for. I use the right-click context option or I click on the extension icon to open a new tab. I'm very happy with that. I don't know if it's a known bug, but I cannot set a keyboard shortcut for 'open tab on the right'. The editor doesn't appear to allow typing in the text box for that option. I'm on Windows 10.
