The original CSS was applied with Chrome Extension UserCSS, though I then packaged just the CSS relevant to Gmail as a standalone Chrome Extension.

Updated Nov 6, 2019. Google updated the interface and Ads are showing again. This update hides ads again.

Hell yeah. I've been in agony since Inbox's demise, trying hopelessly to use Gmail's horrendous interface. You hit the nail on the head: Inbox was designed for USERS, Gmail is designed for Google's business interests. Thanks for creating this alternative.
