- Why not a simple standalone application? I plan to use this once and hopefully never again, why in God's name would I want an extension that stays there until I remove it? Not to mention, it does not work. In step 2 of 3, it asks to insert a USB flash drive or SD card, except it keeps suggesting flash drives that are not plugged into my PC and have not been plugged in for months before I ever installed this extension, one of them belongs to my friend and she hasn't been here in about 2 months, yet her flash drive is one of the options? AND THE SD CARD I AM TRYING TO USE IS NOT SHOWING UP! I USED THIS SD CARD FOR THIS EXACT PURPOSE PREVIOUSLY!!!!! Why do you all insist on making software so incredibly frustrating? It cannot be an accident, there are too many skilled programmers and web developers making far too much money for it to be an accident, what is the purpose of driving us insane? I just want to reinstall the ChromeOS that managed to corrupt itself, why is this process becoming more and more tedious? This is not the first time I've done this, and yet I've never struggled to the point of needing to post a review before. It does not work.

- It simply goes on and on and on. Over 500% even. Nothing holds the download file I have checkd. And even if so... how would it be to suspect something is wrong if we reached 100% and still not writing the usg or sd card? Really?
- Ali Adib
- Doesn't work, it gets stuck at 0%
- King bee
- been trying to do this but my Chromebook doesn't have enough storage I just cant do it thought

- Works just fine, installed on two older core i2 and i3 dell latitude computers.
- Adam Edell
- I followed the instructions exactly to install Google Chrome OS Flex (search Google under model, choose flex). I used Chrome on MacOS. Extension installed perfectly smoothly. Took a bit to find a correct size 8 GB or greater USB stick (had a 7.5 one, too small. Tried a 64 GB SD card. Nope. Bad one.) Tried a 32 GB SD card. Success! Shoved it into an old Dell Inspiron 3185 with UEFI boot and secure boot off. Boom. Wow. So cool to give new life to old hardware! Been waiting to try out Chrome OS after trying Ubuntu, but hoping Chrome will be even lighter weight for casual browsing.

- chrome is next best thing to windows 11 best ive tested out.
- Jon Kelly
- Doesn't work as advertised. Either the app extension is faulty or the instructions are poor. Perhaps both. The "puzzle piece" (ironic name) does not lead you to any extension or any path to find one. Very disappointing.
- Rick Fisher
- useless, doesn't work

- Everything works but the problem I'm facing while installation "You are using an out-of-date ChromeOS image"
- Viking Vista
- So...mine has been stuck at "0% completed" on "Writing" for over an hour now. But I was warned it could be slow. How much longer should I wait for it to reach 1%?

- I was apprehensive reading the recent comments about the utility not working. However, my experience was totally opposite - creating a ChromeOS Flex USB installer was a really smooth and fast process.
- JEFFREY PACKARD
- This stopped working months ago. Gets to the download and install stage and just hangs at 0%. Tried numerous drives, remove/add extension, clear everything in Chrome, and nothing works anymore.
- Ezra Shapiro
- I've tried it multiple times on different computers, using different Google accounts and different usb drives. It keep getting stuck on Writing 0% completed.
- Christopher Kendalls
- Installs Chrome OS Flex but it does not see WiFi. Will try Ubuntu I'm not going to spend more money on this machine.
- Donk Bonk
- It lets me pick between two USB drives that are not and have never been plugged into my computer. I don't even know how that could happen.
- Aarav Desai
- It works good but does not come with play store. I wish it came with play store then I would be happy.

- Richard Taylor
- Worked really well for me on an old laptop that was not functioning, download this to a new usb stick and boot from the machine. the laptop is now back working well
- Wayne Barsing
- Useless. Had high hopes for it. Cant even click on 'Get Started". Service worker becomes inactive all the time. When going into the extension, it wont unpack as 'manifest file is missing'. Such a shame. Tried it on 2 computers.

- SOLVED : Unknown error: Verification failed.. Try again Misleading "Verification Failed" Warning — Still Boots Fine (in my Experience) Spent hours re-flashing USB drives after repeated "Unknown error: Verification failed... Try again" messages. The utility implies the recovery image is unusable—but that’s not always true. In my case, the supposedly "failed" USB booted a reused laptop using ChromeOS Flex just fine. The image was valid, but the tool’s rigid validation logic gave a false negative. There's no option to skip or manually verify, and no guidance when this happens. This issue is widely reported, yet undocumented. A simple “Proceed Anyway” toggle or clearer messaging would save users hours of unnecessary troubleshooting—especially when the image works despite the warning.

- It does not open when I click on it in Extension. I emptied all the caches and history and still does not work. Any suggestions?

- Just a quick note for everyone who says this ruins a USB drive. It's only temporary. You can fix this by using a USB formatting tool. There are a lot of them available online for free. Just google "usb media format tool" and you'll find one. Pick one that doesn't look sketchy and run it through a virus scanner if you're concerned. I used formatusb.com and it worked great to recover my 64 GB flash drive after using this utility. You cannot format using your typical Windows or Mac OS, but don't throw away that USB!

- linux app not supported on linux - seriously?!
- Aziz Skrli
- Stuck at downloading
- Mm mmm
- Mixed bag--you have to reformat (thus wipe) your usb THEN re-reformat back to FATY or your old chromebook won't even recognize the thumbdrive...and soon neither will the devices you plug it into so there's no option to un-reformat it. -_- these instructions could have been much clearer...a lot of room for irreparable damage. I haven't gotten into my chromebook yet, it still feels like a lost cause. It should've been easier/clearer/less damaging overall.
