Description from store Double-click a word or highlight text while holding the "Ctrl" key (or another hotkey you set) to bring up a pop-up bubble with translations, definitions, images, search engine results, and more. You can quickly switch between data sources and languages, and look up words on any webpage, including PDFs. This browser dictionary app covers a wide range of use-cases, from language learning, sentence mining, and vocabulary building to academic research and casual browsing. ⭐ Key Features - Multiple built-in data sources with the option to add custom sources. - Results in multiple languages, allowing you to switch between them on the fly. - Pronunciation recordings and IPA transcriptions, with the "autoplay" feature for audio. - Shortcuts and hotkeys for different pop-up activation triggers. - Settings sync and backup with support for multiple settings profiles. - Blacklist and whitelist to control what websites and pages the pop-up bubble can appear on. - PDF support through an integrated PDF Reader. - Resizable on-page pop-up bubble. - Alternative lookup method by typing the query instead of selecting it on a page. - Dark mode support. - Four built-in themes with the option to create custom themes using the Theme Editor. - Four built-in theme schedules with the option to create custom timelines using the Theme Schedule Editor. 🌐 Sources There are several built-in data sources available, and you can also add your own sources using the "Custom Source" feature. To do this, simply enter a website URL in the settings to include it as a source. You can also apply CSS (styling language) if you want to customize how it appears in the pop-up bubble. Check out the complete list of sources in Definer Wiki at https://lumetrium.com/definer/wiki 🔠 Languages Results are fetched in multiple languages at the same time. You can set your preferred languages in the settings and rank them by priority. If there's no information in your top-choice language, results in the next preferred language will be shown automatically. You can also manually switch between results in different languages directly from the pop-up bubble. Choose from any of the 487 languages listed in the ISO 639-2 Language Code List. However, keep in mind that not all sources support every language, so the availability of results may vary depending on the language selected. 📄 PDF Support Definer comes with a built-in PDF Reader that lets you use the pop-up bubble feature on PDFs. To open the PDF Reader: click on Definer’s icon → 3 vertical dots → “PDF Reader”. Screenshots and details: https://www.reddit.com/r/lumetrium_definer/s/Hgy5ApbVoq 🎨 Appearance You can completely personalize the appearance of the extension. Change the colors, fonts, corner roundness, and even add your own CSS if you're really into customization. This is made possible by Definer's integrated Theme Editor, which allows you to design unique and attractive themes in minutes. It's also possible to configure themes to change automatically depending on the time of day by placing them on a timeline in the Theme Schedule Editor. 💬 Bubble A bubble is a small pop-up window that appears over selected text on a webpage when it's needed. You can: - Adjust the bubble's size. - Set up hotkeys to trigger the bubble. - Create rules for when the bubble should appear on certain websites or webpages. ⌨️ Hotkeys and Triggers Configure triggers and assign additional hotkeys so that the bubble only appears when you press specific keys on the keyboard while selecting text. These triggers can be tailored for special situations, such as when you're typing in a form or editing a document. There are four triggers available: - Mouse Selection: By default, hold the "Ctrl" key while selecting text with your mouse to make the bubble appear. - Double-click a Word: By default, the bubble will appear when you double-click on a word without needing any hotkeys. - Keyboard Shortcut: The default hotkey is "Alt + G", meaning you need to press these two keys at the same time after highlighting a text fragment. - Context Menu Action: After selecting a word, right-click and choose "Define [selected text]" from the context menu. This action does not support hotkeys. 🌓 Blacklist & Whitelist Definer can manage bubble activation in two modes: 1. Enabled on all pages, except those blacklisted (default setting) 2. Disabled on all pages, except those whitelisted You can create URL rules that determine if the bubble should be active on the page you’re viewing. To do this, click on Definer's icon in your browser toolbar, select "Configure," and toggle the switch for either "This website" or "This page." This creates a simple rule. However, you can also manually create more flexible rules in the settings to match URLs based on the following conditions: - Matches domain - Matches URL - URL contains - URL starts with - URL ends with - Matches pattern - Matches regular expression Definer's icon will turn gray when the bubble is disabled on the active page. ⚙️ Setting sync With so many customization options, you’ll appreciate the convenience of backing up and synchronizing your settings automatically. Definer makes it easy to keep everything in order across all your devices. - Cloud Storage: Store your extension settings in the cloud so you never have to worry about losing them. - Sync Across Devices: Whether you're on your laptop at home or your desktop at work, keep your settings consistent across all your computers and browsers. - Create Multiple Profiles: Set up profiles with different settings for various tasks or environments. - Switch Profiles: Quickly change profiles whenever you need to adjust your settings for different situations. 💡 Use Cases 1. The bubble will not work in tabs that were open prior to installation. It's recommended to restart your browser after installing this extension. WHY IS A SOURCE GRAYED OUT? If results for a particular source aren't found, that source will be grayed out and skipped to the next one. CAN IT WORK ON PAYWALLED PAGES? Yes, it works on any webpage, including those behind paywalls. DOES IT WORK ON EPUB (E-BOOK) FILES? Yes, it can handle .epub files if you use an online reader like https://reader.ttsu.app DOES IT WORK IN GOOGLE DOCS? No. Google Docs renders its contents in a way that restricts extensions from accessing the text directly. As a workaround, download the document by going to "File" -> "Download" -> "PDF document". After that, open the file with Definer's built-in PDF Reader. 🔑 Permissions and Privacy For detailed explanations of each permission that Definer uses, check out the Privacy Policy on the Lumetrium website: https://lumetrium.com/legal?service=definer&document=privacy-policy ⚠️ Troubleshooting If something isn't working properly, here's what you can try: - Restart your browser. • (2025-07-27) Adrian A: It's working perfectly. The only issue I have is that when I open the Google search window, Google's AI Overview option appears for a split-second, before disappearing from the I-frame. This happens to me in Brave browser. Please fix this, because this extension is otherwise very useful.

  • (2025-06-15) VU HOAN PHAM VAN: Your app is truly amazing — thank you so much for creating such a helpful tool! I use it regularly and really appreciate the thoughtful design and smooth experience. I have one small feature suggestion that I think could make it even better: would it be possible to add a highlighting feature, similar to what the Chrome extension Web Highlights offers? (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/web-highlights-pdf-web-hi/hldjnlbobkdkghfidgoecgmklcemanhm?hl=en). I often highlight important content while reading online, and it’s incredibly convenient when those highlights are saved and reappear whenever I revisit the page. It would be wonderful if your app could support something like that — ideally for both webpages and PDFs (including local files and URLs). Thanks again for all your work — I’m truly grateful for what you’ve built, and I’m excited to see how the app continues to grow!
  • (2025-06-08) Olesia Kniazeva: Your app is just perfect! I tried to find one which can make translations with ai, as well as give me definitions, but it giving far more then i expected, it was such a pleasure to see youglish in there! And all those configurable options! And it's design is so nice. It would be even more great if you would add tatoeba site by default, with configurable option on amount of words for an example sentese to include based on selected word. (https://tatoeba.org/en) and it would be nice to have forvo as well for audio from natives (https://forvo.com/) But actually, it's already such a great helper extension, can't even think about better option! Thank you for this aid for language learning

  • (2025-03-07) Homan Wong: It's a simple, easy-to-use yet very customizable extension! I wish I could change the icons for my custom sources, whether to choose one from Material Icons, to fetch the favicon from the website, or just to let me specify the URL myself.
  • (2025-03-07) cHaN E: I've been using Definer for months and so far, it's the most satisfying Chrome extension I've tried. I just wanted to thank you for creating this tool. As someone who easily loses focus, this extension has been a tremendous help in keeping me engaged while reading and looking up information I'm unfamiliar with.
  • (2025-03-05) Violet_ Ember: This is SOOOO helpful, I love it the way it is. But would you be able to adjust the text size on the bubble as well? Not just the bubble.

  • (2025-02-18) saman: Dear lumetrium, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation for your relentless efforts and hard work in developing this exceptional program. The highly practical customization options, the beautifully designed user interface, and the remarkable speed truly set it apart as unparalleled. Should the capability to integrate various artificial intelligence models, particularly Google’s Gemini, be incorporated, this program would undoubtedly elevate itself to become the most outstanding application available in the Google Store. Moreover, the absence of certain features that are available in apps such as "Vocably" and "Masterlingo" is strongly felt. These include functionalities like word highlighting based on the level of learning progress, a spaced repetition system, and other similar tools that enhance the language learning experience. The incorporation of such features could significantly improve the effectiveness and user engagement of this application. Thank you once again for your dedication and commitment to excellence. Sincerely, [sam]
  • (2025-02-12) Eren Kara: Perfect. If there was a button to save words it would be even better.
  • (2025-02-07) Marek Pietrak: Very useful, not invasive and customizable. Exactly how it should be. Thank you for this.
  • (2025-02-01) Nicholas Ferrara: This is a jaw dropping improvement in productivity for language learning. It is amazingly customizable which means whatever source you need can be added and displayed painlessly. I used to try to stitch multiple extensions together and I still wasn't able to display as much as Definer does all by itself in a compact usable interface. No more copying and pasting stuff to your dictionary of choice!
  • (2025-01-31) Zakaria Khedri: well done guys
  • (2025-01-24) Eysan Yazıcı: Extremely helpful!
  • (2025-01-24) Xela O.: excellent in every way. one of the absolute best extensions i've ever used - they should be proud. only suggestion would be to fine tune the wikipedia plugin to be able to recognize disambiguations and alternate names to better find the relevant wikipedia page. e.g.) if I highlight "Barack Hussein Obama", I can get his page to pop up on the Wikipedia plug-in, but if I just highlight "Obama", it doesn't take me to his page nor does it ask me if I want to select his, Michelle's etc. (Wikipedia generates a page with all of the disambiguation options when you type something vague, i don't know if you could connect and display it for selection somehow.) THANK YOU!
  • (2025-01-15) Achim Braemer: Fantastic extension! I love the contextual search in mobile Chrome (just long tap any word). Never undestood why it is not available in desktop Chrome. I was looking for something like it and was happy to find this extension, which gets *very* close. (You may want to mention that in the description to help people find it). Great job! Only downside: I would like to donate, but don't have crypto currency. Please provide a Paypal account. One suggestion: Please make the popup close on Esc key. That key press is hardwired in my spine and it is always a downer when it doesn't work.
  • (2025-01-15) Rocky Wang: This is very helpful with great design! It will be even better if the learning curve of adding custom sources is lower. I still couldn't add cambridge dictionary source into it: tried multiple variations and still doesn't work properly. Such as "https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english-chinese-simplified//definer/iframe?text={str}&lang={lang}"
  • (2025-01-14) Faisal H.: i started to read a book and there are some words on every page that i don't know the exact meaning now thanks to this extension i can just know the meaning of that word just by double clicking instead of searching on a next chrome tab which result in lose focus while reading a book
  • (2025-01-14) ksungjune: Massive appreciation and huge respect to you. Thank you very much! I won't forget and will be forever indept.
  • (2025-01-12) heorhii Todorika: I am only 5 Minutes on this App but it works fantastically! I can't be more happy with it, OP i'm very thankful for this extension. Works like japanese railway
  • (2024-12-23) Ibrahem Muhamed: Amazing
  • (2024-12-14) Kevin: Excellent extension, to this date I think the best I've ever used...Thanks
  • (2024-12-01) seaqua sa: Great extension. One suggestion: Need MORE "Custom" Options.
  • (2024-11-29) နိုင်ရာဇာ ထွန်း: Amazing, very useful for me for studying. Comfortable, time save, simple and outstanding definder Extension ever. Hope you add some free AI asking option to it.
  • (2024-11-25) hữu phúc nguyễn: Hi, thanks for a great extension, no more switching between search and document. I have some feedback for you: - Some sites are not working, I'm trying to use it on bookfusion.com (online epub reader) but it's not working so far, even by using context menu or hot key. Maybe because they are having custom actions on click? Tested on chrome and edge - Default hot key `Att + D` focuses omni bar, I have to switch to other. - Add hotkey to open Definer similar to clicking to extension icon. This helps in case popup is not working on some sites. One can press `Ctrl+C` then `hotkey` to lookup, less convenient than popup but a useful fallback option. Or even have option to use popup or top bar mode.
  • (2024-11-12) Viet Mai: When the double click works, its great but I am not sure why it only works 30% of the time for me. I have to keep going to the option page to disable/enable an option to use it.
  • (2024-11-10) Moo Scree: Very well done, great dictionary extension. And *fully* configurable too! Please add thefreedictionary.com as a source.
  • (2024-10-24) Eric: Needed to find a replacement since Google decided to not update their own extension to Manifest V3. Thank God this one exists! Even better than Google's! My only suggestion is please add an import/export for our settings
