Double-click a word or highlight text while holding the "Ctrl" key (or another hotkey you set) to bring up a pop-up bubble with translations, definitions, images, search engine results, and more. You can quickly switch between data sources and languages, and look up words on any webpage, including PDFs.
This browser dictionary app covers a wide range of use-cases, from language learning, sentence mining, and vocabulary building to academic research and casual browsing.

🌐 Sources
There are several built-in data sources available, and you can also add your own sources using the "Custom Source" feature. To do this, simply enter a website URL in the settings to include it as a source. You can also apply CSS (styling language) if you want to customize how it appears in the pop-up bubble.
The available built-in sources include:
- Google Translate
- Google Dictionary
- DuckDuckGo Instant Answers
- Wikipedia
- Bing Images
- Google Search
- Speech synthesizer (audio source)
- Google Dictionary Pronunciations (audio source)
🔠 Languages
Results are fetched in multiple languages at the same time.
You can set your preferred languages in the settings and rank them by priority. If there's no information in your top-choice language, results in the next preferred language will be shown automatically. You can also manually switch between results in different languages directly from the pop-up bubble.
Choose from any of the 487 languages listed in the ISO 639-2 Language Code List. However, keep in mind that not all sources support every language, so the availability of results may vary depending on the language selected.
📄 PDF Support
Definer comes with a built-in PDF Reader that lets you use the pop-up bubble feature on PDFs.
To open the PDF Reader: click on Definer’s icon → 3 vertical dots → “PDF Reader”.

🎨 Appearance
You can completely personalize the appearance of the extension. Change the colors, fonts, corner roundness, and even add your own CSS if you're really into customization.
This is made possible by Definer's integrated Theme Editor, which allows you to design unique and attractive themes in minutes.
It's also possible to configure themes to change automatically depending on the time of day by placing them on a timeline in the Theme Schedule Editor.
💬 Bubble
A bubble is a small pop-up window that appears over selected text on a webpage when it's needed. You can:
- Adjust the bubble's size.
- Set up hotkeys to trigger the bubble.
- Create rules for when the bubble should appear on certain websites or webpages.
⌨️ Hotkeys and Triggers
Configure triggers and assign additional hotkeys so that the bubble only appears when you press specific keys on the keyboard while selecting text. These triggers can be tailored for special situations, such as when you're typing in a form or editing a document.
There are four triggers available:
- Mouse Selection: By default, hold the "Ctrl" key while selecting text with your mouse to make the bubble appear.
- Double-click a Word: By default, the bubble will appear when you double-click on a word without needing any hotkeys.
- Keyboard Shortcut: The default hotkey is "Alt + G", meaning you need to press these two keys at the same time after highlighting a text fragment.
- Context Menu Action: After selecting a word, right-click and choose "Define [selected text]" from the context menu. This action does not support hotkeys.
🌓 Blacklist & Whitelist
Definer can manage bubble activation in two modes:
1. Enabled on all pages, except those blacklisted (default setting)
2. Disabled on all pages, except those whitelisted
You can create URL rules that determine if the bubble should be active on the page you’re viewing. To do this, click on Definer's icon in your browser toolbar, select "Configure," and toggle the switch for either "This website" or "This page."
This creates a simple rule. However, you can also manually create more flexible rules in the settings to match URLs based on the following conditions:
- Matches domain
- Matches URL
- URL contains
- URL starts with
- URL ends with
- Matches pattern
- Matches regular expression
Definer's icon will turn gray when the bubble is disabled on the active page.

❓ FAQ
WHY DOESN'T IT WORK ON SOME PAGES?
The bubble will not work in tabs that were open prior to installation. It's recommended to restart your browser after installing this extension.
WHY IS A SOURCE GRAYED OUT?
If results for a particular source aren't found, that source will be grayed out and skipped to the next one.
CAN IT WORK ON PAYWALLED PAGES?
Yes, it works on any webpage, including those behind paywalls.
DOES IT WORK ON EPUB (E-BOOK) FILES?
Yes, it can handle .epub files if you use an online reader like https://reader.ttsu.app
DOES IT WORK IN GOOGLE DOCS?
No. Google Docs renders its contents in a way that restricts extensions from accessing the text directly. As a workaround, download the document by going to "File" -> "Download" -> "PDF document". After that, open the file with Definer's built-in PDF Reader.

- (2023-10-11) Rafael Carvalho: muito bom e completo
- (2023-09-21) H: Do you perhaps have android version as well? I really like this extension! If you have change to make android version, it would be perfect if it has bobbles (similar to Facebook Messanger's chat head) function as well (to find words easily anytime)!
- (2023-09-20) Ayush Sharma: damn
- (2023-09-19) Samuele gg: Sebbene la descrizione (parzialmente) e il titolo dell'estensione sono in italiano, la lingua italiana nelle opzioni della scelta della lingua non è disponibile. Deludente. Although the description (partially) and the title of the extension are in Italian, the Italian language in the language selection options is not available. Disappointing.
- (2023-09-19) gem bank: perfect and flawless
- (2023-09-15) *: Confusing settings, the wordings and the terms. Unfriendly triggers. Hotkeys don't work. (Even a small thing like Ctrl+Shift+1 shown as Ctrl+Shift+! makes just a bad impression.) Browser level pop-up isn't prompted with highlighted text, I have to type it manually each time. Base language cannot be opted out from automatic translation. Heavy bloated but the essential features aren't there.
- (2023-09-14) Raihan Sifat: Excellent Extention.
- (2023-09-11) Jason: Nice app, English is my second language so it really saves me a lot of time of definition looking when I am reading long (900 to 2000 pages at this point of the game) textbooks and this product, this ingenuity is one of the few ones that are actually providing this kind of service with clean designs and nice user interface. BUT, but, somehow the shortcuts for opening this page just wont work. Even when I switch the shortcuts to other keyboard inputs. The shortcuts only work when I read a pdf in the integrated pdf reader, and it won't work in other occasions, such as texts/doubleclicks/keyboard inputs in Chrome. I really hope you can fix this because the usage will be much much more efficient:)
- (2023-09-05) adam burges: May you find eternal peace and love. From first glance I thought your extension was created by a company, not an individual. It was only when I found your reddit post that I gave your extension a shot. I'm so glad I did. It solved literally all my problems (of today.) If I wasn't a student, I'd donate, and I really implore others to do the same.
- (2023-08-28) AmirHuseyn Erfanifar: Oh my GOD, you made THE DICTIONARY. I love your extension. I love the fact that you put lots of options for customization. I love that you guys knew what people needed and tend to build it. I cannot emphasize on me gratefulness. Writing a review was the least I could do. I'm going to introduce your extension in my blog soon. You absolutely ROCK.
- (2023-08-22) Jonathan Armani: Absolutely Perfect! Took forever to find a descent, double/right click - text to speech. This extension went far beyond what I expected. No more opening separate tabs. Double click, for speech, definition, web search and more, all within the pop-up bubble. How is this not advertised more? Best extension of it's kind by far. Thank you to the developers.
- (2023-08-21) Othman Muslim: way better than the google dictionary extension

- (2023-04-04) ChaneyChane: The design is very beautiful and easy to use! The extension is so helpful. I was finding some pop up translation similar to how Rikaikun works but with languages other than Japanese and this is definitely it! Thank you.
- (2023-03-11) saunaperse: Best extension
- (2023-02-23) Mrinal Kr Gupta: Never seen an extension which helps you in all ways. Inbuilt researching with translation and defining and even images for reference, just WoW it is. I would just like to suggest an additional source of JSTOR.com. When you have Wikipedia, google, DuckDuckGo, Bing images, why not search for some articles or docs for further help, obviously to one who's interested.
- (2023-01-14) qq qq: Спасибо. Как прикрутить chatGPT?

- (2022-11-30) Ameya Deb: Amazing extension overall Just ran into a bug which I wanted to bring up. The extension is breaking some google spreadsheet websites, causing the scrollbar and whole page to freeze up. Examples include sites like <https://releases.moe/> and <https://index.fansubcar.tel/>. Edit: fixed now!
