Q: Where is the extension icon?
A: At some point Google Chrome changed the way extensions are displayed. You need to click on the puzzle icon to the right of the address bar and then pin Internet Connection Monitor

Q: What exactly can be monitored?
A: The extension monitors the Internet connection and reports 3 statuses:
π’ Online: Internet connected
π Connection issues or "No Internet connection. Wi-Fi/LAN OK": if Chrome itself cannot properly determine whether Internet connection is down while you're connected to LAN (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) - this status will popup. Most likely, your LAN (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) is connected, but there is no Internet connection behind it. In most cases, it is ISP/provider issue
π΄ Offline or "No Internet connection": Internet disconnected. LAN (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) may work or not, but Internet itself is unavailable
Q: How does the extension test the connectivity?
A: The extension uses a combination of Chrome internal API and pinging Google servers via https (port 443). It does not expose any open ports or something else that could compromise user's security
Q: What is the testing interval?
A: How frequently to ping Google servers to determine the status of Internet connection. The option is configurable: check very 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds
Q: Does this extension have access to my browsing history, etc?
A: It does NOT. Moreover, it does not require any special access at all (you can notice that other extensions ask you to give them some permissions during the installation process)
Q: Does this extension record my IP address or something else?
A: It does NOT. The extension uses https://www.ipify.org API to get the public IP address. Read the Privacy Policy to get a better perspective on your data's privacy: https://internetmon.org/privacy-policy.html
Q: Can this extension measure Internet speed?
A: It cannot. Please, use Speedtest by Ookla π https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/speedtest-by-ookla/pgjjikdiikihdfpoppgaidccahalehjh?hl=en
Q: Will it work if Chrome is closed?
A: Not, it will not. You need to have a Chrome window open to track your connection log. It's relatively easy to add Chrome to autostart on Windows, Mac or Linux
Q: Will it work if computer is in sleep?
A: Yes, it should work, but the mechanism of tracking the disconnects while the computer is in sleep has not been thoroughly tested. Macs, for example, wake up every couple minutes and ICM checks the connection. But do not rely on precise measurement during the computer sleep, keep the computer running. Alternatively, use Realtime monitor feature inside ICM to check what's going on. Access it via main extension popup
Q: Can you use it on Microsoft EDGE, Brave or Chromium?
A: Yes, you can. It works on all Chromium-based browsers
Q: Is there a Firefox extension?
A: Currently, only Google Chrome and Microsoft EDGE are supported. There is a feature request π https://bit.ly/icm-firefox to implement the Firefox version. Vote for it if you want to speed up the development

Q: ICM shows Offline even when Internet is connected. How to fix?
A: Most likely it is caused by another extension or software (anti viruses, ad blockers, malware scanners, etc) blocking the monitoring. For example, Malwarebytes Browser Guard blocks all ICM connections to Google. Read how to fix π https://bit.ly/icm-offline

- (2024-01-25) Steve Schwartz: Update 1/25/2024: Oops: the icon is configurable, my dumb error. I guess the update changed it, however, so I JUST SPOKE TOO SOON. Fixed, and still at 5 stars++ . Sorry for the error...Update 1/24/2024 - the new icon is just plain awful: the nice big green dot was much more discernible, and the new one is almost invisible. Plus, the adoption of the WiFi symbol is misleading/confusing in addition to being hard to spot. Please at least make the old green dot optional. Otherwise, it is still useful, but this tarnishes a gold reputation. Exactly what I was looking for - very much appreciated!

- (2023-09-27) Gary Roberson: SIMPLE TO READ AND USE. I don't honestly know why someone hasn't thought of this WAY before now. We have Spectrum, and our node for the entire neighbohood went down. It sucked, and the only way I kept my sanity was to look and quickly see if it was down by a simple red X or green checkmark. And I plan on using the detailed statistics log to prove they owe me about a weeks worth of credit!

I was having problems with my connection dropping constantly and initially I thought it was a problem with my ISP since I recently moved to 5G internet. With this extension I was able to figure out that I had in fact a faulty usb-c port (the one I was using for my ethernet cable. I bought an ethernet to usb adapter instead and have had zero connectivity problems since then. Great work!!

- (2022-03-20) Inderjit Singh: Wow so simple but helped me figure out why I kept on getting disconnections. Apparently I had 2 connections running to my switch from my modem and giving me disconnections every few mins for the last 8 months. I have a large network so it was impossible to find without knowing when the disconnections stopped if it was a constant disconnect it would be easy but it was intermittent so i would have to disconnect a wire see if anything went down and see if it messed with my signal

- (2021-09-19) Babygremlins: the log does not show the connectivity in a continuous timeline so it's no good if you want to use it to prove to your internet provider that access was down. it only logs the lack of connection for like 10 seconds then shows no entries until it gets a successful connection whatever amount of time later. so you have no positive proof to show your internet provider for the downtime gap. so the log is worthless.

- (2021-08-10) Jim Wachholz: Great extension to help provide information to the ISP so they could fix internet problems. It totaled 71 disconnects over 24 hours yesterday. Today the log shows ~40 disconnects but the summary drop down only shows 6 disconnects in 24 hours. Is something wrong with the summary pulldown? Am I not understanding the summary "Disconnects, 24h" properly? Thanks
