😍The most popular screen tinting application for Chrome!
🧐This extension is in not endorsed by or affiliated to f.lux Software LLC.

Q: I'm young and have good eyes. I don't need this.
A: Young teens may be twice as sensitive to light at night, and the elderly much less so. These results have important implications for schools, senior care, and device usage at night, too. Simply put: everyone has a use for this and will notice benefits from decreased blue light.
Q: Why not G.lux or Night Light?
A: Other extensions like G.Lux or Night Light just change your display's color. Screen Shader is the only extension available that smartly changes the color of your screen throughout the day using sunset/sunrise times! Research has proven that the circadian rhythm is tied to solar time. Individuals have shown greater preference for screen tinting applications that take that into account.
Q: Does this really remove blue light from my display?
A: Yup! Screens work by individually tweaking the amount of red, green, and blue each pixel of your emits. Pixels being the small square of colors that together form the image. Screen Shader alters the coloration of websites to a redder color. To show these colors, the display will tweak its pixels to show more red light, less green light, and considerably less blue light; but just enough so you can still see different colors. The more you increase the shade, the more the color of the website will be reddened, the less your computer display will emit blue light!
Q: Why do I need this? Can’t I simply change my screen's brightness?
A: Changing the luminosity does not remove white and blue light from your display. Those colors are still unnatural and will irritate your eyes, even if dimmed. A full day in front of your computer can wreak havoc upon your melatonin cycle and internal clock. The unnatural light can also harm your eye retina. Screen Shader is designed to considerably reduce these effects by eliminating enough white and blue light to provide you with the best browsing experience and eye comfort.

- (2025-04-20) håkon håkon: makes youtube shorts go white, atleast when in dark mode
- (2025-02-02) Gauss G: It messes up Youtube dark mode. I wouldn't give it 1 star just for this, but it's been more than a year since this issue first appeared. Seems like they don't care Uninstalling this extension fixes youtube shorst FYI
- (2025-01-12) Corban Hogan: Chromebooks already do this, don't they? And you can adjust the intensity of it in the settings. So for Chromebooks, this isn't much of a point of this, but I can see it being useful.
- (2024-11-17) Nathan Olonoff: This has always been a great and pretty much the best option but it's biggest fault is that it sometimes breaks websites and even disabling it on that website won't fix it, you have to disable the extension entirely to restore the broken websites. Two current offenders, YouTube with dark mode specifically on shorts but some other things whole sections turn white making navigation impossible as buttons and text are white as well. Bluesky scrolling is broken, the background color disappears and is replaced by black. These happen even with the extension disabled on those sites. Only way to fix is to disable the extension entirely. I've looked at some alternatives but still haven't found anything as good it's just frustrating that there are some major issues with this and the creator isn't very quick with fixing these things. If they could just make it so disabling on a site TRULY disables the extension on that site and not still running in the background that would solve probably all of these issues.
- (2024-10-27) Don Pissillo: Pretty damn good unless I find out down the road their spywhere. Does a good job and makes it easier to go to sleep
- (2024-09-29) Anthony Kent: Great extension. In the last few weeks (maybe due to an update?) I have felt as if the Chromebook light is punching me in the eyes. This has cured the issue.
- (2024-09-02) BuTech: Great work, but it does not work on all websites... I'm using it also for my pro life and it doesn't work well with the Microsoft suite (outlook, one note, etc...) plus some other random website are also broken by this extension. However the overall user experience is pretty good, nice job. For people having the same problem as me, I recommend using extensions like Eye Guardian that works well on all websites.
- (2024-08-05) Swirlheart YTV: Great extension. Something I've found, though, is that it doesn't actually work on itself. So, since I use it to darken my screen, if I need to change the settings at all, I essentially get flash-banged.
- (2024-06-14) Armand: I love this extension but it's breaking dark mode on Youtube. Please fix :D
- (2024-05-18) A A: Removes dark mode from some of my dark theme websites, eg. https://finviz.com even when Screen Shader is disabled. It also blocks some buttons on those websites. Not good unless fixed. Uninstalled and solved. Installed a different night shift mode extension without these bugs.
- (2024-04-05) Diana Doherty: Overall love this extension. I noticed it interferes with the ability to click buttons on certain websites like this one https://www.strazcenter.org/ Maybe because of the font color?
- (2024-03-03) HoGamesPro: not working at all they will just tell you to download another extension
- (2024-02-24) The Sauce Guy: Not sure why, but this extension prevents me from being able to play videos on Reddit in fullscreen. After disabling every extension I had one by one, I narrowed the issue down to this one. Outside of that, it's fine for what it advertises.
- (2024-02-07) Flying Beaver: I'll say at the outset that unlike some users, I have had no issues with Screen Shader and Chrome Updates. The January 2024 revision/overhaul of Chrome plus all other common apps, and the attempt to integrate all into one package for all devices really is "A Bridge Too Far" and it has become a major pain in the backside. There is also a pair of recursive loops inside the "sync" code, and to show them is easily repeatable. Apparently the Chrome Team took the day off when we were covering recursive." *Hint: If going through all the steps takes one back to where they started, four times or more in a row, that is not 'friendly'. Methinks it was a bit rushed, but that's only because I had the misfortune to teach the subject, and seen multiple instances of such loops creep into assignments/projects. However, that is Chrome, not Screen Shader. I've been using Screen Shader for about 15 months and, for the most part, it helps make life for my bad eyes (Cataracts awaiting removal - again, and bad headaches) a bit more pleasant. The setup method is fairly simple, and actually became much easier once I discovered the "pull-down" menus, which give additional functionality. I would be curious - merely for my own "curious bug" what the rationale is for the "Invert" mode. Perhaps I'm over-thinking things, but I don't get it, and the "why" and "what" are not really obvious. However, I don't use that mode. I've set up a custom profile since living north of 54 degrees N, we have short daylight hours as it is. If I had one wish that could be satisfied, it would be a more gradual transition during "wake-up" - perhaps an option for 2x as long from night to day, or even 1x, 2x, 3x - user choice. I know that's another level of complexity, but since transitions based on time, and to some extent light level and tint are already included, this is not too much of a stretch. If I was going to graph the transition, I'd say, "can the user change the slope?" As it is, going from full dark night to full day is perhaps a bit of a shock. Or perhaps the option already exists, but I haven't found it yet - there are many combinations of menu choices. Screen Shader does work and play well with some other dark/light extensions, and badly or not at all with others - in both cases extensions with a rating of 4.7 or above, and a good sample size of users. Kudos to the developer and the entire gang of coding slaves - been there, and I know it can be frustrating. Overall, this is a very good, and extremely versatile and "configurable" program. Of all the extensions I've tried, this one gives me the largest number of possible options to try. Many thanks to the 'back room' - you know who you are.
- (2024-01-14) Ernesto Quint: Works well as intended, but disables RTX VRS if extension is enabled sadly. :( So I have to disable this extension so that RTX VRS works in videos o7o7 It's the only downside, everything else is good.
- (2023-11-12) Rafael Benavent: Was a great extension. I used it every day. Since about a week ago, it started causing problems. Pages, or parts of a page, would randomly become blank. Moving the cursor over the page would reveal page elements only for them to disappear again after moving the cursor.
- (2023-10-02) Andrea Haller: I used to love this extension! Now it is causing all sorts of issues on chrome. My pages will suddenly switch places, the screen will only be partially shaded, one of my screens will show up on the the other screen, and there will be colorful lines across the screen. As soon as I removed the extension all of these issues went away.

- (2023-09-26) Clark Heidi: The four stars are for how awesome this extension is when it works. MY problem is that I use a combination of a 2015 Macbook Pro, a Mac Mini, and a Windows PC at various work stations. This extension works wonderfully for the second two, but on my Macbook laptop, it turns both the background and text black and I can't see anything at all on my open tabs. On my other two computers I am able to click the icon and adjust the settings, but on my Macbook when I click the icon, it's just a narrow bar that opens up, and there are links (Shade, Color, Location, Settings) that change when I hover over them, but nothing happens when I click on them. What this means is that SEVERAL TIMES PER DAY, I am uninstalling this extension so that I can see what I am doing (at all) while working on my laptop, then reinstalling it when I work at my other two computers. Which so far, I have put up with. But it's extremely annoying.

- (2023-05-29) Angel S: Great Use as Dyslexia Colour Overlay I've been looking for a colour overlay extension for ages to change the colour on a PDF for ages. I used to use the "Colour overlay" extension but that was actually so bad and not compatible with either Linux or Vivaldi. Today I finally came across "Screen Shader" and it has finally happened a fully browser compatible overlay that even works on pdf. You can change it to any colour and I was just looking for a nightlight initially because my colour is yellow and that's basically what a night light does. But this is like putting any colour of your plastic overlay on your screen.

- (2023-05-27) This extension was lovely until I realized it doesn't turn off when disabled. It kept modifying and breaking the UI of outlook online, etc. while definitely toggled to the 'Disabled' position. Bummer! Could have been a great tool for light sensitivities.

Other screen tinting products and features don't do enough, I would still get headaches like it was a regular screen. BUT SCREEN SHADER CHANGED EVERYTHING. NOW I WANT to look at my computer and work on assignments, even boring things. This is a college MUST-HAVE. I've stopped dreading my computer and have greatly increased my productivity, and I can easily still sleep after. This is amazing. Screen Shader has changed my life. Thank you so much Marc Guiselin and the crew of wizards!
