Delete a single email in Gmail™ with a customizable user shortcut (default is Shift + 5).
-= Description =-
Google's Gmail™ has allowed a keyboard shortcut to delete entire message threads (#) for a long time, but it has never made it possible to use a keyboard shortcut to delete individual emails in threads.
Until now.
Enter Delete Key for Gmail™. Press Shift + 5 (% symbol), and voila - only the current individual message is deleted. It performs the same action as clicking the menu button on a message and selecting "Delete this message."
The best part is you can change this shortcut to anything you want from the extension's Options page.

- (2023-10-29) Google User: Like others (not the sophists) it doesn't work for me. I refreshed and closed Chrome. I change the setting to "no modifier key" + delete (for the delete key) and it doesn't do anything. But....if I OPEN up the email and then press delete,it works. This is not intuitive or logical. Why should I have to open up SPAM and then delete? I expect the extension to delete whatever is selected and not needing to OPEN it like the default # or remapping to d does.
- (2023-10-16) Strictly Moe: Worked immediately. Just refresh gmail
- (2023-09-11) Shannon Benzing: Easy to customize - but it doesn't work for me. I don't know if google has blocked it or if it's b/c I'm on a company managed account that possibly doesn't allow it.
- (2023-09-03) Andre Gomes: Just another garbage inside PC... Doesn't work!
- (2023-06-03) Akua: No this doesnt work. After simpel installation, I have refresh my Chrome and Gmail and it doesnt work. I tried to change keys but still not working.
- (2022-09-28) Michal Wlosik: Works as expected. Thanks so much!
- (2021-03-26) David Ptak: The app worked perfectly for me! Thank you SO much! If you're reading this, you likely have already figured out that deleting full conversations (as Gmail does by default), often ends up deleting emails you later realize you wished you kept (i.e. your original sent item, for example). This simple extension makes it easy to delete just a single email in the conversation (using a keyboard shortcut, rather than mousing around to do it). Note (as a previous reviewer pointed out) that the extension only works when actively looking at a specific email (not the full inbox list), but that usage model was perfect for me.
- (2021-02-03) Rasmus Sommerskov: Great extension. Thanks! 🙏 PS. Could you add an option to delete whole message threads from the Gmail "front page" (i.e. my inbox with lots of messages) with a shortcut? Right now you have to select (checkbox) a message, then press SHIFT+# Would be great to have a shortcut to delete it by just pressing one shortcut.
- (2020-04-09) Yong Hui, Ronny Tan: The Delete button works only after an email has been opened up from the inbox. It doesn't work if I were to select the email while in the inbox page (by putting a tick into its checkbox). Can the extension be improved to allow deletion directly in the Inbox?
- (2020-03-24) Some Guy Online: Does not work; Set NO modifier + Delete; did not work. Set NO modifier + d; worked, but I already had this in Gmail's native shortcut settings.
- (2018-05-04) Mike U: Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally! This will save me so much time by allowing a simple setting to delete gmail. How on earth Google thinks their insane 3 key combination to delete email is helpful is beyond me. This extension works great and I can move though my emails much faster because of it!
