Block GIF and WebP animation images on HTML pages to reduce bandwidth and resource usage
This extension blocks animated images (*.GIF and *.WebP formats by default) to save bandwidth usage and improve page loading performance. The extension can get enabled or disabled from the action button. Once the extension is enabled, no animated resource is fetched from the internet. Instead, the remote image is replaced by a local alternative.
When blocking mode is enabled, the user can still selectively load blocked images from the right-click context menu over the image context.
How does it work:
This extension redirects all the animated image requests to the local SVG image. This way, there is no server request at all (not even the HEAD request).
Features:
You can unblock an image from right-click context menu. The unblocking stays for this browser session. Or until the extension is disabled by pressing the toolbar button.
Reduce bandwidth usage significantly by preventing any animated image loading. Animated images use a large amount of bandwidth compared to normal images.
Optionally disable the extension for WebP or GIF image format.
Optionally block video elements from auto-playing
Optionally block CSS animation

Blocks gifs but also blocks legit, non-animated webp images. I would give it 5 stars if it just stopped gifs, like the name says. it's not called Gif and WebP Backgrounds Blocker, but it should be, bc that's what it does.
Please add settings to select the image format to block. I would prefer to block GIF and PNG, but not WebP. Thank you.

Just installed it and it works great, removing all the annoying animations. Saves time downloading, bandwidth and CPU cycles.
If you are looking for a simple image on/off toggle, try the "Block Image" extension. Some sites DO make extensive use of Gifs, especially the animated ones. Chat sites are often like that. Tried this out and it worked. This can be a good extension to master that situation while retaining the overall other image quality of the page.

Another worthless POS extension that does absolutely nothing. Does not stop gifs. Does not work. Just a waste of time adding and removing it from chrome. Garbage.

worked for me after i enabled "Allow access to file URLs" in addon detail page. i wish instead of the minus sign on blocked gifs it was the first frame of the gif
