This extension will make mailto: links open in a Gmail compose window. Nothing more, nothing less.
* Supports Google Apps accounts
* Works on javascript-inserted links
* Includes option of working on bcc: fields
* Option to open in new window rather than default tab
It supports to, cc, subject, and body (and optionally bcc) fields, and is made to be compatible with RFC2368, the mailto: scheme standard.
It doesn't modify the mailto:address itself, so you can still see the link in the status bar when you hover over it, which allows you to easily read the target at a glance.
Please note, some report the need to restart the browser for it to work. I have never had to, and can't figure out why it would be necessary, but if it's not working after installing, try a restart.

- Spent about an hour trying to research ways to fix my browser to open a compose email tab properly upon clicking a mail to link. I wanted to do this by just adjusting gmail or chrome settings, but the handler once I found it didn't have anything I could actually adjust. Ridiculous that two products from the same company don't integrate better. It was google workspace so maybe that's why. Anyway, I finally found a suggestion to try this extension, and now five minutes later I have the functionality I was looking for. Yay!

Now if I click a mailto link on a website, it takes me to a browser page that says This site can’t be reached The webpage at https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?tf=cm&to=***SOME EMAIL ADDRESS***&cc&bcc&su&body&fs=1 might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. I can access gmail just fine though.

- Works for me, I chose the force open in new window option, went back to the page I wanted to test, refreshed the page, clicked the mailto link, and got a new gmail window open in chrome, exactly as desired.

- I love this plugin but for a while now, every time I click on an email address, multiple (up to 5) browser tabs are opened. This is quite annoying. Does anyone else have this problem or can you fix it?

- Update Oct 2020 - Works in my Google Chrome v85. (You have to restart browser after adding this extension.) You also may need to go into Windows default apps protocols and change your Mail to Chrome or a different browser I guess.

- Works well here on 64 bit Windows (was redirecting to Inbox, now GMAIL). I want mailto links to open in a new window otherwise you could just set up the Chrome protocol handler (which stupidly doesn't open it in a new window).
