This extension adds a button to your browser toolbar. Click the translate icon whenever you want to translate the page you're visiting.

The extension also automatically detects if the language of a page you're on is different from the language you're using for your Google Chrome interface. If it is, a banner appears at the top of the page. Click the Translate button in the banner to have all the text on the page appear in the new language.

By installing this extension, you agree to the Terms of Service at https://chrome.google.com/extensions/intl/en/gallery_tos.html

NOTE: Please do NOT try this extension to translate this page or other pages on https://chrome.google.com/extensions. It does not work because Chrome does not allow extension gallery pages to be scripted.

UPDATE(v1.2): Now you can change the extension options to enable automatic translation or prevent the banner automatically popped up for specified languages and web sites.

Auto-detect language for popup translation is unreliable. No option to manually lock the target-language. I keep getting Luxembourgish for German because they share similar words. Please give us the option to manually select our target-language.

There's really no limit to how long these reviews can be, because Google Translate is a multilingual neural machine translation service developed by Google to translate text, documents and websites from one language into another. It offers a website interface, a mobile app for Android and iOS, and an API that helps developers build browser extensions and software applications.[3] As of April 2026, Google Translate supports 249 languages and language varieties at various levels.[4][5] It served over 200 million people daily in May 2013,[6] and over 500 million total users as of April 2016,[7] with more than 100 billion words translated daily. Launched in April 2006 as a statistical machine translation service, it originally used United Nations and European Parliament documents and transcripts to gather linguistic data. Rather than translating languages directly, it first translated text to English and then pivoted to the target language in most of the language combinations it posited in its grid,[8] with a few exceptions including Catalan–Spanish.[9] During a translation, it looked for patterns in millions of documents to help decide which words to choose and how to arrange them in the target language. In recent years, it has used a deep learning model to power its translations. Its accuracy, which has been criticized[by whom?] on several occasions,[10] has been measured to vary greatly across languages.[11] In November 2016, Google announced that Google Translate would switch to a neural machine translation engine – Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) – which translated "whole sentences at a time, rather than just piece by piece. It uses this broader context to help it figure out the most relevant translation, which it then rearranges and adjusts to be more like a human speaking with proper grammar".[2] History Google Translate is a web-based free-to-use translation service developed by Google in April 2006.[12] It translates multiple forms of texts and media such as words, phrases and webpages. Originally, Google Translate was released as a statistical machine translation (SMT) service.[12] The input text had to be translated into English first before being translated into the selected language.[12] Since SMT uses predictive algorithms to translate text, it had poor grammatical accuracy. Despite this, Google initially did not hire experts to resolve this limitation due to the ever-evolving nature of language.[12] In January 2010, Google introduced an Android app and iOS version in February 2011 to serve as a portable personal interpreter.[12] As of February 2010, it was integrated into browsers such as Chrome and was able to pronounce the translated text, automatically recognize words in a picture and spot unfamiliar text and languages.[12] In May 2014, Google acquired Word Lens to improve the quality of visual and voice translation.[13] It is able to scan text or a picture using the device and have it translated instantly. Moreover, the system automatically identifies foreign languages and translates speech without requiring individuals to tap the microphone button whenever speech translation is needed.[13] In November 2016, Google transitioned its translating method to a system called neural machine translation.[14] It uses deep learning techniques to translate whole sentences at a time, which has been measured to be more accurate between English and French, German, Spanish, and Chinese.[15] No measurement results have been provided by Google researchers for GNMT from English to other languages, other languages to English, or between language pairs that do not include English. As of 2018, it translates more than 100 billion words a day.[14] In 2017, Google Translate was used during a court hearing when court officials at Teesside Magistrates' Court failed to book an interpreter for the Chinese defendant.[16] A petition for Google to add Cree to Google Translate was created in 2021, but it was not one of the lan

Would be nice if Google Translate option on the context menu — right click on highlighted text — would give a pop-up [or small floating window] where the highlighted text is already ready to be translated; and then all that's left is to select another language [apart from default translation] to get an on-the-fly translation within the floating window.

Translation quality has been abysmal since the most recent update. There are so many instances of asterisks being added to names, punctuation marks being omitted from the original text, AND random punctuation inserted that were never present in the original text (e.g. em dashes, asterisks). Google translate is behaving like first generation Chatgpt. Please revert!

working smooth and useful. But it need additonal feature to be able to change target language without going to options and changing the the default primary language. Since chrome is also google product you should consider to include this extension into default features of google-chrome rather than additional extension need to be installed

It's very convenient to translate individual words on a page. But it would be great to add these words to favorites for further study. I'd like to see a favorites icon in the translation pop-up.

A Chrome language extension is a small browser tool that helps users understand and work with different languages directly inside Google Chrome. It allows instant translation of web pages, selected text, or specific words without leaving the page. Many language extensions also offer extra features like word meanings, grammar hints, and pronunciation support, which makes reading foreign-language content much easier. A good language extension should handle all languages properly, including right-to-left ones like Persian. When RTL support is done right, text direction, alignment, and readability stay natural across the entire interface. Without it, translations become hard to read and confusing. Tools like https://themelad.me/ show how clean language handling and proper direction support can greatly improve the user experience.

**For people having trouble with the page not translating, simply reload the page and the translation will kick in** I've noticed that if I right click to open a tab the translation won't work but reloading fixes the problem. I use Google translate all day, every day and it works incredibly well. I've tried other translation extensions such as DeepL and they just aren't as easy to use (though sometimes the translations are more accurate).

website is in japanese, sometimes it translates, sometimes not. extension unhelpfully says "translate is built into chrome" well its auto detect obviously doesnt work all the time... thats why i got the extension? what were you guys thinking? add a button to make it translate or an extension that lets you copy paste the text or translate from an image. why make this and inclued a "keep running but don't do anything" function?
