It gives the Error of "Timeout, TTS never started, try picking another voice?" but it's the same voice i have been used the entire time. and it does the same when i click on the "Test" button

Sure, it tells you to change voices and try again, but from what I've worked out it does this with every voice. Bummer. This was my most trusted add on to help me read pages that my old eyes are too tired to squint at any more. Super bummed. Please, please developer, consider fixing this issue.
• (2025-06-19) Leon Hoang: This extensions used to be good, but now it is horrendous. Constantly requiring to grant permission from Google to read. Sometime the extensions stucked in a loop where even afer following the instruction on the google site to grant permisison, it asked for permission again. Absolute trash now.

• (2025-06-15) Sathwik Krishna Kunapareddy: Works well with almost all websites. The only one I had trouble with was Amazon's Kindle. It's only reading the first 10-15 characters of a line and skipping to the next line where the same happens until the end of the page. I hope that gets fixed.
• (2025-06-14) Hiuyi: Great for a FREE TTS reader. Customizable voices, and speeds. I can open the text in a separate window and enjoy the TTS at my own pace. Sentences being read are highlighted, so you can easily keep up. Amazing for reading Google Play Books, automatically flips the page.

It stops suddenly after reading 3 or 4 words, sometimes not even that many. I'm very disappointed since it used to work. Needs updating BADLY.

• (2025-06-04) isabella smith: i've been using read aloud for, probably, 5 years now. i have always used google uk female voice. sometimes, like once every 4 or so months, that voice on the extension will stop working and glitches out (reading only the first few words of a sentence over and over again or not starting at all) and sometimes restarting my computer helps. if not, usually this will only last 12 or so hours and would start working again. however this time it been down for over two days. the only voice that works is the default voice which i hate. i love read aloud. no alternative i've tried does what i need it to like this one. i don't want super natural sounding voices. i don't want ai. i want google uk female voice pitched and speed up just a tad. i want a pop up that i can close if i want, or leave up and have it scroll through the text for me. i don't want to have to click every individual paragraph to get it to start reading. read aloud does everything i need it to, and more. i just wish it was more reliable.
• (2025-06-02) nina liu: this worked pretty well for a couple of weeks until last week, when it suddenly won't play unless you only the microsoft voices, which are horribly bad quality. if you want to use a different voice, it will not load the tts. this makes it extremely frustrating to use. hopefully they'll fix this issue

• (2025-05-30) Quartus Thomas: I'm a simple man. I learn better while reading and listening to text. All I wanted was something to use at a moments notice online or offline. Especially offline this extension can be used with offline HTML webpages.

• (2025-05-15) David Metcalfe: This had a lot of potential, but between the developer's paternalistic hesitancy around adding more expensive paid voices, and general bugginess and issues with the extension itself, I can't in good faith recommend this one anymore. Alternatives like "Human Reader, powered by ElevenLabs" are far better out of the box and within the same typical price range.

• (2025-05-09) Sidd zaz: I was using this extension without realizing that it collects sensitive information like passwords, credentials, security question, or personal identification number (PIN) among others. I would stay away from these.
• (2025-05-01) Manolo: Easily one of the best text-to-speech extension! However, I hope the developers would consider: (i) Word highlighting. Currently only paragraphs are highlighted. This would be very useful as it would allow users to not only follow along what is being read (if they want to), but also, to immediately identify where they left off after a pause. (ii) Allowing repositioning of the Pop up window - by way of dragging it to anywhere on a web-page.
