Schending van het auteursrecht is een dagelijkse situatie voor mod-ontwikkelaars. De meeste van de vrij populaire mods zijn tegenwoordig op een gegeven moment illegaal gekopieerd en herverdeeld op een andere site, zonder erkenning of toestemming van hun ontwikkelaars. Veel van deze websites zijn gehost in Vietnam of Rusland en kunnen moeilijk van het internet af worden gehaald vanwege verschillende wetgeving op het gebied van auteursrecht. Veel van deze sites zetten advertentiemuren voor hun downloadlinks om illegaal geld te verdienen aan het harde werk van de mod-ontwerpers, en sommigen gaan zelfs zover dat ze eigendom van de mods declareren. Sommigen van hen zijn zelfs bekend voor het hosten van malware en virussen terwijl ze beweren dat het om echte en ongevaarlijke mods gaat. Dit moet stoppen.
Wanneer een DMCA of een ander afhaalverzoek faalt, moeten we op mede-modgebruikers rekenen om mensen ervan te weerhouden mods te downloaden van deze bronnen. StopModReposts is ontworpen om dit te stoppen. Dit is hoe we van plan zijn dat te doen:
1. Mensen laten weten dat de websites illegaal zijn. Er is geen enkele manier om mensen ervan te weerhouden deze sites te gebruiken als ze niet weten dat de acties van de website in strijd is met de wet en dat de website de rechten van de mod-ontwikkelaars negeert. Daarom zal deze extensie een overlay weergeven bij het browsen op een site als deze.
2. Mensen laten weten dat het bezoeken van deze websites hun computers in gevaar brengt. Niemand wil geïnfecteerd worden met malware, dus we zullen hen waarschuwen dat de sites mogelijk hun machines kunnen beschadigen.
