La maggior parte delle mod un po' popolari oggi sono state ad un certo punto copiate illegalmente e ridistribuite su un sito di terze parti, senza alcun riconoscimento o permesso dei loro sviluppatori. Molti di questi siti sono ospitati in Vietnam o in Russia, e sono difficili da abbattere a causa della diversa legislazione sul copyright. Molti di questi siti monetizzano illegalmente i loro link di download per guadagnare denaro dal duro lavoro dei modder, e molti arrivano persino a rivendicare la proprietà del contenuto illegale.
